I was just putting somethign away in a cabinet and I knocked over a bottle of canola oil. The lid was not on tight and it spilled out. I did spilled cooking oil once before many years ago, and swore I would never do it again, this time was not as bad as that one, but cooking oil is the worst thing to spill. It is hard to clean up because it is slippery, and it took a lot of paper towels to clean it. Any towel or washrag you use to clean it is pretty much no good after cleaning up the oil. Thankfully I had an old ratty wash cloth and an old ratty dish towel (I knew I was keeping them for some reason). Have you ever spilled cooking oil?

I work at a pizza place, and spilled nearly a GALLON of it on the floor. The BEST way to clean up an OIL spill of this kind is.... 1. get out your TABLE SALT (and I don't mean your shaker, I mean the container you buy to FILL your shakers with!) and pour it on the spill. 2. allow it time to soak up the oil... yes, it WILL soak it up!!! 3. SWEEP UP the soaked salt. 4. Mop/wash with hot, soapy water.

Thank you for the advice. I was really worried about my wood floors when I did this.

WOOD FLOORS!!!! Now HOLD ON!!!! Instead of HOT soapy water, use COLD soapy water... you may have to mop a couple times, but HOT water on WOOD floors do NOT mix. I do house cleaning, so I know these things! Hot water tends to OPEN the pores of the wood and allow water deeper into the wood than you WANT. COLD water keeps the pores CLOSED. The dirt, oil, etc, that you wish to clean is on the surface of the wood anyhow, so you WILL get the dirt, but you will not be allowing extra moisture into the wood, which can damage it in the long run. As for the oil... oil is great for wood! Did you know that Murphy's Oil soap is actually made up mostly of VEGETABLE OIL!!!

My wife knocked over our litty Fry Daddy fryer, and the lid came off. Thank goodness we were not using it at the time and the oil was cool. It did however make a huge mess and we uses several paper towels and real towels to clean it. It took forever, it was horrible.
