Has anyone heard about a virus that imitates a virus protedion download?

One of my daughter-in-law's aunts said that her computers at work had been destroyed by a virus that went through the firewalls, and mimicked the upgrade process of the Norton and MacAfree and other anti-viruses. Now I find through my antivirus uploader that there is a bin file missing. Then when I entered the home page of my free antivirus, I got a page not found. Has anyone heard of this happening. I use Avg and now part of my protection is gone. I do not know about the other anti viruses, but has anyone heard of it?

My AVG detected a worm file and isolated it a few days back. Now, I am having the same problem with my AVG anti-virus, too. I can't repair or remove it, too. I got to the home page and tried uploading the latest update and I got the page not found, too. I might try to download or overlay another virus program over this one so that I can remove the AVG, clean up the computer and re-install it. I also have that .bin file missing, too. I have tried to get on the boards for AVG, but I can't.

I finally got through to the forums on the AVG website and found out that the .bin problem was not a virus but a problem with the update on AVG's side. They are working on it. So, I do not have a virus and just need to get a new update.

I actually tried downloading the updates manually. But, I got into the AVG website and they said this was a problem on their end and they were fixing it. Needless to say, the next day everything was fine with my AVG.

Thanks for telling me, but I went back to Avira AntiVir. It detects more worms and trojans than Avg. and also I can update at any time during the day and scan it any time. With AVG I had to do a certain time each day and for some reason, it took way too long to scan.

I usually use AVG but it got in that one, but luckily the bin was destroyed so I removed AVG and repaired the Avira Antivir I had, it seems that it goes after the popular ones. I went to the AVg site and found it was blank, and figured that something was wrong.

My theory is that they are University students and they hate that ordinary people like you and I are on the internet and this is their way to discourage us from getting on the web because they despise us. The second theory is that they are from a certain country and they hate people in the West from getting on the internet and this is their way at getting back at one or more countries they hate. If it were just an experiment they would ask the University to set forth several computers on a private lan to do it, so obviously the virus makers are up to no good.

I do not go by emails either but it seems my aunt-in-law does. And she uses Norton. I stopped using it because I like free. I find the one I use now, Avira is very good and much better than AVG.

I have not heard of the virus.I have lost some documents though,i did not delete them.I don't know if this means anything but it is awful strange...Norton did come up on my page but i deleted it because i use MaAfee...

That Norton was not from Norton, I bet. It comes first through the email, but it is not an attachment, it is the email itself. That is what makes it dangerous and after you open the email, it gets in. So if you are using preview pane I would not use that anymore.

I made sure that I do not put any of my emails on the preview pane, just in case. My Yahoo gets lots of spam and trojan type email and if I had on the preview pane, I would be in trouble.

Some people think this is new, but this is actually older and more common than you think. Yes there are viruses and spyware that pass themselves off as "legit" antivirus and antispyware programs. In reality they are bad programs that can damage your system, expose you to pop-ups, hijack your system, pirate your information. They'll also block updates and legitimate anti-virus/spyware software, most notably when the real stuff tries to eliminate the fake programs.

That sounds like it. Anyway it comes from an email telling that you need to upload your anti virus, you do what it says, it blocks the regular anti virus and then you cannot get on the internet. I still think it is from a university student who hates ordinary people got on the internet and wants to regain control for himself and his 'deserving' cronies.

Good day... I've never heard of it but it seemed destructive and have a very good camouflage to attack. I'll try to do some research and try to find any solutions to that if it does exist before I had the chance of encountering it.

It seems to be an old virus that used to be on dos, and it imitates the notification that you get for upgrades. It pretends to be Norton and I also learned it also pretends to be a Windows XP upgrade. And it is not an attachment, it goes through firewalls, and it will eventually keep you from getting onto the internet. If you get it, you may have to format your hard drive.

I do not have it, but I do belong to Cnet and I will see how to remove it if I get it. I hope it is not as complicated as one that I heard had got through Norton. I was reading all the instructions and you practically had to jump through hoops.

I have never heard of this happening before. Especially going through so many different anti virus softwares. I could see a virus getting through maybe one or two. You didn't happen to catch the name of the virus?

It seems to be a new one that mimics the upload of different anti viruses. What it does is spoof the home page of the anti virus, asks for your name and password and gives you the trojan. I have no idea of its name, but my aunt-in-law said that the company she works for are very careful and even they got it.

Haven't heard of it but I don't like the sound of it at all. Thanks for warning me. I use AVG but I used to use Norton. I will be on the look out for something. I cannot afford to get a virus, I need this computer for my second and much needed income. Thank you so much for the warning and be careful.

Yeah I was using Norton when I got the new computer but when the 60 days trial ran out, I couldn't afford to upgrade at the time and had to go back to AVG. I wish I had the money to upgrade because I really like the new Norton. AVG is good though. I never open emails that I don't recognize. You never know what kind of virus you can get by doing that. Anyway thanks again for the warning. :)

Do you have Zone Alarm's free firewall? It stops everything! I haven't heard of the virus you mention but I'll certainly keep a lookout for it. Where do you think you picked it up?

I did not get the virus, my aunt-in-law got it at work, and when we at my daughter-in-law's birthday party, she told me about it. So I decided to warn everyone here that there was a virus that mimicked the upgrade notification of Norton and the other anti virus companies.

I have not heard about this. This is a scary thought. I use Avast and I hope it has not been affected. Guess I'd better check. I am surprised, though, that most of the (big) antivirus programs have not seen this and protected against it in time to prevent the infection.

I use Avira and so far I have never had any problem with that one. My aunt in law uses Norton and I do know that Norton usually warns when you have to pay for an upgrade by email, so this virus mimics the Norton anti virus.

I have never heard this. I have Kaspersky anti-virus. It is giving me total protection. And it is a registered version. I think there is always a difference between a free version and paid version o a anti-virus.

The company my aunt in law works for uses Norton Anti-virus, so it goes after paid version not just free versions. Anyway I heard there is workaround for the AVG. Someone on this post printed the instructions. Anyway I usually delete email that is not from my friends and I know what they would say, and from what I have not subscribed to. So I would never get that virus. I have one of the best free anti viruses that is better than AVG.

I've heard about this virus. From what I hear it's extremely common, and easy to reproduce. I haven't any had any first-hand experience with it, But it can be fatal to a computer.

You have to be careful when you get an email asking you to upgrade your virus protection. If you know the time when you should, just go to your anti virus web site and avoid the email. When they find a fix, your anti virus will let you know.
