Many of you know that I have been working on my geneology online. Well guess what, I came across a cousin whom I never knew. I can not even figure out how she is my cousin, even though she explained it to me. Simply because, I have no idea who she or her immediate family is. But it is still so totally cool to find family like this. It was a little creepy at first. I came across her tree and not only did she have all of my family member's listed, but my name was listed also. So I contacted her through http://www.myancestry.com. Now we are chatting back and forth through email. She had 254 family members listed, I had 97. So I have been stealing from her list, hehe. Has anything like this ever happened to you?

I told my middle sister and she is more excited than me. She sounded like a kid in a candy store who could have anything she wanted. It was really nice to hear her like that.

That is so cool Rozie, finding more family members and getting to know them too. My cousin is currently doing ours and she keeps us updated on our family website through myfamily.com. I still don't understand how to use it so hopefully whenever they decide on the reunion, that it's completed and I can see it in it's written form. It's hard to follow online, well through this site anyways. Good luck on finding more family members :0) next thing you need is a family reunion, now that would be cool!

Actually, my aunt says that we are having a family reunion this year in Mississippi. I will not be going, because I found out about it too late. We have them out here from time to time and they are very nice. I believe the last one out here was in 2003. It was really exciting to see cousins that I had not seen in a very long time. I hope that your family has a reunion soon also. Then you can tell us all about it here on Mylot.

That happened to me, once. it is so exciting. You make me want to try to contact her again. It was so neat because my dad's cousin remembered the lady's grandma! Congratulations on your wonderful find. I love doing genalogy work. It is so rewarding when you have experiences like this. Keep up the research. How do you do your research? I use ancestry, too. and the LDS Chuch site.

I look up individual people. The thing of it is, i did not get very far until I started talking with my aunt and looking at obituaries and things like that.

Oh, yes, exactly the same thing happened to me. I was doing genealogy and found a distant cousin who still lived in the area where most of the family used to live and gave me a ton of information. I think she had about the same number of people listed, too. I was able to work from there to get even more people. I've also connected with a lot of other long lost cousins, too. One was a man older than my grandfather who grew up with my great grandfather and my grandfather. He gave me an old family photo with my great, great grandfather and grandmother in it that's about 100 years old. Now and then, I come across other distant cousins in Canada, the United States and Australia.

So you know what I am experiencing. It is such a rush to find new family and be able to get to know them and their immediate family. I am very excited about all of this. I can not wait to talk to this cousin on the phone. I called and left a messege on her voicemail and am waiting for her to call me back.

I can't believe I can finally see your discussions again! Took long for them to figure out the problem or for the glitch to work itself out. Anyway, I have played around with my geneology line too and it's interesting, isn't it? I found out that part of my family is related to Wyatt Earp. I haven't contacted anyone yet cause I'm not that far into mine yet. That's so cool that you actually found a family member though, and she had your name and family's names on her tree. I bet that was weird to see. Awesome though.

Yeah, it was pretty creepy at first. But it did not take too long for it to sink in. You are related to Wyatt Earp?? Well, how cool is that? Keep me updated oh how your search is going.

Uh-oh, sounds like you have the genie bug. It's a search that becomes very addictive very quickly, but it's the greatest thing in the world. There is no feeling like the success of finding where you come from and what your people were like. www.familysearch.org is another great site to find proof of your family members vital stats. Good luck on your journey.

My cousin was doing a family research on that site and I don't think we have found relatives that we have not met yet. But that is really nice to know that you have other family that you never met. That is cool. Have a good one.

In order to really find family, I had to not only pay the subscription, I had to also do a lot of offline research. But it has been well worth the effort.

Good day... I didn't have a research on my own genealogy so I can't really say but I can imagine the feeling of finding someone who had you and your whole family in their list and you didn't even know about them. That's way too scary and intriguing at the same time.

Hi, Rosie, I know how you feel. I just met a second cousin I had never knew about until 10 years ago when I started to research my family tree. She and I are close in age although she lives in Washington state and I lived in Iowa at the time. Her grandfather and my grandfather were brothers. It is very exciting to meet family members outside the immediate family. I have also met online a distant 5th cousin! We share a great-great-great-great-grandfather! I use Family Tree Maker program to keep all my information. I also use www.ancestry.com along with the Mormon site www.familysearch.org. I also use two other sites for research: www.rootsweb.com and www.usgenweb.com. Both sites are free sites. The downside is you are depending on submissions from others and have no guarantee of the accuracy. With my own family tree, I have seen quite a bit of misinformation out there.

I have seen a few mistakes also. The cousin that I found, her great-grandmother is my great-grandfather's sister. I talked to her for the first time yesterday. She is very nice and we have a whole lot in common.

I called and left her a message, but she has not gotten back to me yet. When I told my middle sister, she was over-joyed. She is already speaking of us all getting together. I think that it will be very exciting too.

Considering my Grandma and Grandpa had five boys and 11 girls. I have a lot! of cousins, I haven't even met nearly half of all of them, or my cousins for that fact, so when I hear I have a cousin that I haven't met before I'm going to meet, I get all excited. My uncle over the last few years just traced a family history, but it doesn't include anyone new on it yet, just where our ancestors came from.

The more he works on it, it will start to get more exciting as he crosses others that are a part of your family tree. The key is to keep at it.
