Do you find hiccups very irritating sometimes especially when you are in front of your friends or you are talking with your client? I had a very bad experience today. I was doing a test on a patient. Suddenly,I got hiccups non stop. I tried my best to stop it but it was not effective. I needed to explain the procedure to the patient. In the end,I called my colleague to cover my job and I quickly went off to have a cup of plain water then only the hiccups got away. Did you experience this before? Is there any more effective method to get rid of hiccups besides drink water? Please share, thanks.

This is a fun way to rid those nasty hiccups! When growing up, my grandmother raised us to take a teaspoon of sugar every time you get the hiccups! It works like a miracle plus it's really sweet. What could be better or sweeter than taking a teaspoon of sugar to make the hiccups go away?!

I didn't know that. All I did before when I have a hiccup is to drink lots of water. My friend also suggested to burp and it will go away. I've read every suggestion here but I think I like this one better. You're right. It's a sweeter way to stop a hiccup.

It is very rare on everone I guess to have hiccup attacks. I usually try holding my breath a little and drink water.

it's basically drinking water... but then if there is no water, you can hold your breath and count like 10 seconds or more... the longer the better... try it coz it works for me. then if you saw someone with hiccups, scare him or blame him for something he would deny. it also worked for me.

Don't know if this has been said already but this IS the way to cure hiccups instantly! Learned this from working in bars but you bet a shot glass (dixie cup) of water. Strike a match from a standard matchbook (not the wood ones though I imagine it would work too). Drop match in water and drink. I PROMISE you your hiccups will be gone. Something about the sulfur or something. I just revealed an age old secret here and it works I promise you, I've tried it myself.

I saw something on tv the other day where this Dr cured his paitents hiccups by putting pressure with his fingers above the paitients eyebrows for about a minute. It worked for the person so I tried it with my son one day and low and behold it worked. Im not sure if it it works for everyone but its definitely worth a try!!!

The only way to get rid of hiccups is to drink plenty of water. I'm not sure why but I think it has something to do with digestion. Anyway, some people claim that hiccups is a sign of growth. As in getting tall. So just let the hiccups take over for a while. Whenever I hiccup it isn't so bad anyway I can still carry on a decent conversation.

? I just usually hold my breath. I think hiccups has something to do with our throat being clogged or somthing. One time I experienced almost getting choke on food then I started hiccuping. To stop it, I drank some water and wala! It disappeared.

My wife gets hiccups that can last for quite a while. We found the best way for her to stop her hiccups, is for me to give her a long french kiss. Myself, I get hiccups fairly often, but I never have more than a few. At most, I'll have 5 or 6 hiccups. Usually I just have 2 or 3 though. Weird, huh?

They say the best way to stop hiccup is to alter your breathing. some also suggest drinking water, one of the most effective is forgetting about it.

Hmmm thanks for posting this. I just remembered how long it was ago I had hiccups. But anyways, I really agree that hiccups are so so annoying. Especially if you're in the middle of something with many people around. Water is the best remedy though. Another remedy is getting frightened! Yeah you need to get frightened to stop the nasty hiccups. But how can you get frightened if you have no one to scare you? Well, then go back to water therapy. :)

From what I understand hiccups are modified forms of respiration. Basically there are certain things that our body or brain do to correct some problems. Like for example if there is an obstruction in the airway we tend to cough to clear the obstruction. Coughing is likewise a modified form of respiration. With hiccups, it controls our breathing since our blood has more blood oxygen than the normal level. Thus when you hiccup, it tends to change the rate of breathing and later on lower the oxygen in our blood. That is why, when we drink water or hold our breath, it stops us from breathing and eventually lower down the oxygen in our blood, treating the problem and of course the hiccups stop. Well, another way to stop hiccup is breathing in paper bag since what you will be breathing is your exhaled air, thus lowering the oxygen in your blood. Best to you!

When I get them what I do is take a really deep breath and hold it for 20 or 30 seconds. It usually takes a few times but it has ALWAYS worked for me.While you are holding your breath if you have a hiccup make sure you keep holding it for the 20-30 seconds.Aside from drinking water that is the only sure method I know of.
