Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Are you afraid of the dark? Why or Why Not? I would have to say yes and no. If I'm in the room with my husband or someone is with me, than I'm not bothered by it. However, if I'm by myself I tend to get uneasy. Even when I get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, go to the kitchen, etc. I turn every light on in between....lol. I wonder if it stems from childhood that follows you into adulthood or maybe too many scary movies. What are your views?

I think i am not afraid of the dark. Sometimes alone with lights off is alright with me. Actually, i even have a hard time to get my sleep if there is a light on.

Hi ednasgomez. My husband has a hard time going to sleep if there is a light on as well. The television doesn't bother him but he doesn't like the actual light being on.

I'm not afraid of the dark. Now that I've said that, I do have to say I'm afraid of what may be in the dark. It's hard not knowing what's there and what's not there. I know I don't like passing by a dark window or door because it's unknown what may be there. I guess I'm more afraid of the unknown than I am anything else.

That makes sense. It is funny how our minds perceive things. We could stand in room with only one door and the lights on and we are fine, yet when the lights are shut out our mind automatically allows id to fear what we know is not there.

Not really. I do sleep with the TV on because I want the glare. It's not due to fear, just an uneasy feeling I get sometimes. Plus it's something that I've always needed since I was younger. When I was younger I had a night light and one day I didn't need it anymore. As I got older I focused more on the TV screen, but I don't know why.

Hi xdrowninghavocx. We keep our television on as well, it least it allows me to actually "see" around my room. I guess I think when it is pitch black something or someone is going to jump out of my closet....lol

I am like you, if my husband is not home and is traveling or something, I always leave lights on at night. I don't really like sleeping alone in my dark room. I don't know if I am scared of the dark, but I am afraid I will have nightmares when I am alone, and I don't want to wake up in a dark room by myself after a nightmare, I know it silly, but I just feel better if there is some light when I am sleeping alone.

Hi ladym. I agree 100%! I leave my TV on all night at least it provides a little light. I'm alright if I can actually see around the room, even if it is only slightly lighted.

well yes and no. More in no. I get used to the dark since I was a kid. Actually I love dark. No kidding. I love it when I force my eyes to see in the dark. Oh, and I love evenings. I really dont like the sun. I guess that is one reason I dont get tanned. I dont get out in the sun a lot. But yes I am afraid, when, I watched a horror movie at night. I love horror movies. But watching it in the wee hours of the night is a big NO. Because in our house, it is old, really old, I think more than 25 years. And there are empty rooms that are not used for years and its really dark in the hallway.

Hi trishasantos. I have to admit, I like the dark as well but only if I'm not alone...lol. I don't like it being pitch black because just like others have stated, it is the fear of the unknown, what might be hiding in the shadows...lol

I'm not really afraid of the dark. I'm not fond of the dark, especially total darkness. I prefer to have some light. I just don't like not knowing what or whom could be in a dark room. It's just more of a comfort issue really. I'm definitely a lot more comfortable though when I know someone else is in the room.

I agree, I think that fear of the "unknown" has a lot to do with it.

Let's just start by saying that I like to see. No, I am not comfortable in the dark for countless reasons. In some ways, I wonder if fear of the dark is an affliction of women in Western culture. Like you, I put in a better night with a companion. To take charge, definitely reduce the scary movies. That is one aspect of your fear you can control.

I'm not really afraid of the dark itself but sometimes it's creepy that I don't know what's on the floor. I hate roaches so I always think that I might step on one accidentally when it's dark and I can't see where I'm going at all. But I don't have nightmares and stuff just because it's dark. In fact, I have great night vision once my eyes adjust to the darkness. I can feel things and partially see the shadows. I can even climb the stars in pitch black darkness.

Hi mimico. It is kind of strange because I like the dark, not pitch-black dark, but dark nonetheless.

I do not like darkness. Even in the day time I witch on the light in Bed Room because so much natural light is not there. In the night I use to keep a night lamp always on because I have some time to go to the bath room in the early morning or mid night. Do do not fear dark. There are people who like darkness in many matters but I like every thing in the light. Take care and enjoy every thing in light.

Dear friend, When I was a child I was afraid of dark as two times I had fallen in dark while I was a kid and more over all those horror movies too makes me more afraid of drak as the background of those movies are dark. Later now I am not afraid of dark but I afraid if I fall down or hit somewhere without seeing in the dark.

I would say yes I am. But only if im home alone. If my son or hubby either are in the house i can sleep in my room and have it dark, but if the kid is overnight somewhere and hubby is out..i have the light on real dim and hubby turns it off when he gets in..lol. I was really bad as a kid, i slept in the same bed with my grandmother til i was 12 and in her room til i was 16..czu i was afraid of the dark...obviously i have gotten better since then though.

when i was smaller at that time i use to get scared of the dark n use to remember something horror which makes me more scared. now i m not scared of dark as i have so many more things to do n i m busy all time with my son n its sometimes that i get scared n think all of rubbish which makes me more scared. i think it happens due to our wrong thinking, we watch horror movies , television serials, and i m the kind of person who repeatedly think about the movies n serials whenever i m free n have time n this is the reason which makes me scared n i think if we avoid thinking repeatedly about these things we might not get scared.

I leave some light on because I need to see something if I wake up in the middle of the night. I the problems is that when I feel like someone is out there, or even pulls me out of the bed, I don't see nothing..
