There are those that believe that in the next few years we will - especially in the US have an economic depression where paper money will have little value. Many believe that barter will be the currency of the next decade.
Let's say, hypothetically, you know, just for pretend, the sake of the question that this is true. Do you have knowledge or skills that you can barter?
I'm going to be returning to school soon and I want to make sure that its for a skill, something in the medical field, maybe counseling or nutrition (although nursing would be optimum) that would be tradeable for other skills or goods. I'd like to get certified as a travel specialist - just for personal use - for myself and friends - because its going to get very expensive to fly and we could use the discounts! But that wouldn't take long - if you haven't gone to college yet or are thinking of returning, what would you take with my main question in mind - what do you think you could take that you'd like and be good at that you can barter - trade for goods and services?

I'm a survivor and so while I'm a little worried, I'm not real worried about it. I have always struggled financially and always kept afloat. I've raised 4 kids quite well on my own and without resorting to welfare (except for one brief moment). When my kids were younger, I traded off babysitting so that I could work....I also babysat for money on the side. I've cleaned apartments for those that don't have time but want their deposit back. I've cooked meals for elderly people at a reasonable rate and also done sewing, ironing and laundry. Ive done carpentry laborer and finish work as well...all beyond my regular job. You have to be willing to work hard. Currently, I am making incence bottles and dime catchers that hold 70.00 worth of dimes. I sell them reasonable and I earn quite a good amount each week. Some can't afford them but want them. I am more than willing to barter. I have traded them for fresh veges and I've also given them out free to those that get me orders.

I'd say something involving medicine, or really any of the sciences would be valuable. Assuming there is some global collapse of the economy, for instance, say power supplies of oil were mostly obliterated, or really hard to obtain, I know a lot about setting up solar power systems from my science classes, plus a ton of physics and electronics, which would be useful to trade as a service in exchange for goods. But if you are looking at medicine, I would say that would be a great idea! Part because even if things don't go that way, it will be useful pretty much whenever

Well you certainly would be a great person to collaborate with should things get bad!
