I have seen people have pink eye before but until recently I never realy thought about it. I recently learned that pink eye is caused by feces coming into contact with the eye. OMG! I think if more people new this they might be more inclined to wash their hands. Also I learned that a staff infection is caused by urine. I new a lady who had a staff infection in her surgery incision on her lower back. How does that happen. Remember wash your hands regularily and at necessary times, LOL!

I have never had pink eye. I am not sure if it is contagious, because I have been around several people who have had it, including a small, touchy child. I have been told that it is, but I have not really been offered any proof. Also, for the lady that got the staff infection on her back, if it is caused by urine, could have wet the bed and it soaked through the sheets up to the point where the incision was made. Seems a bit of a child thing, but even adults can have accidents, and she was likely on medication at the time, and it can happen.

Yikes! This is the first time I found this information. I have never had pink eye. Thank God I haven't plus I make sure I wash my hands every time anyways. Hygiene is very important to everyone so we should all be aware of the diseases that can be caused by the little things we do. Thanks for the information!

Just to let you know, there are others on this discussion that have let me know that other factors can also cause these. Gross either way to me, LOL!

I am wondering where you got this info! First off I want to say that "pink eye" is a very generic term used for "eye infection" and can be in many varying degree's. "Pink Eye" is equivalent to the common cold in the eyes. It can effect one or both eye's and is basically caused in the same manner as a common cold. It is contagious in the same manner as a cold. Your post makes it sound like people are smearing sh!t in their eyes...lol "Staph Infection" is caused by the Staphlococcus bacteria and is transmitted usually thru an open cut or puncture to the skin. Again this encompasses a group of about 30 types of bacteria, so again its a pretty generic term. I guess people cut themselves, pour piss in the cut after they smear sh!t in their eyes! Unbelievable! It just seems that some stuff we should be able to get factual information for since after all we are on the internet!!!!!LMAO This is really funny to me....

I wasn't mad at all...I was laughing...It was funny to me(hint: LOL, LMAO, this is really funny to me) thats what those comments meant. I found it hilarious that your post was talking about a medical condition with information that was less than accurate. I am not the one that took it personal, seems you did.

You act like I wrote it about you, the way you are geting out of hand. I can assure you that this post was not put here to offend you so I apologize that it did.

Where did you learn this information? Pink eye is not solely caused by feces coming into contact with the eye. It is one of many causes, which also include allergies, or really most viral infections. Yes, it does happen when feces come into contact with the eye, but that is by no means the only reason. As for staff infections being caused by urine, that isn't true either. Staff infection is caused by a bacteria, which I supposed could be in urine, but to say it is caused by urine is way off. I think it is usually caused by human to human contact.

HMMM interesting. I learned this from my primary physician. My neighbors little girl had pink eye and i was concerned by what would cause it. My concern rose because mom has not been caring for hr children or home lately, due to depression. I asked if it would be from the uncleanliness of her home and the reply above is what I got. This ed to my second statement of stff infection. I will have to look it up now. Are you a Doc.?

No, but I have had pink eye a few times before, and was told differently than what you have been told. I've also been told that if you wear contacts you have a higher risk for it? Anyways, I was told that the virus that causes the common cold and flu can cause pink eye, and that pink eye is pretty much a catch all phrase for an eye infection. Anyways, I found this online... "Pinkeye can be caused by many of the bacteria and viruses responsible for colds and other infections, — including ear infections, sinus infections, and sore throats — and by the same types of bacteria that cause the sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) chlamydia and gonorrhea. Pinkeye also can be caused by allergies. These cases tend to happen more frequently among kids who also have other allergic conditions, such as hay fever. Some triggers of allergic conjunctivitis include grass, ragweed pollen, animal dander, and dust mites. Sometimes a substance in the environment can irritate the eyes and cause pinkeye; for example, chemicals (such as chlorine and soaps) and air pollutants (such as smoke and fumes)." http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_viral/conjunctivitis.html

Whoa! Is this for real? Is there such a contact lens? I mean, pink? Probably when I see a person wearing pink contact lens, i might be scared of her or him. Really really funny.

pink eye is caused by a broken blood vessel in your eye and it takes a long time to repair so alot of the time people who have pink eye will have it for about a week or two.

I am pretty sure you need medicine to get rid of pink eye.

Ok so I have learned that it can be caused by a bacteria infection also. Wouldn't you have to have medication to get rid of the bacterial infection? Bacteria does not go away on its own, right?

I am guessing that it can get in your eye y poor hygene (not washing your hands and then some where along the way you could rub your eye and it could begin this way.

I never had pink eye when I was young. My two children never had it. But, my daughter's daughter had it and I can assure you that it never came from lack of good hygiene! Her kids always asked ADULTS if they were sure they washed their hands. But she had hers right about the time she graduated from kindergarten and other kids had had it, too. So we are sure that's how she contacted it. Well, back in the 90's, my husband got transferred to Nashville, TN on his job. And, while we were up there, I contacted pink eye. It just came out of no where. I had never come in contact with anyone with pink eye and I definitely wash my hands constantly, in the bathroom, after I use any kind of cleaners - and I mean ALL the time. So I have no clue as to where my pink eye came from! I definitely have never heard that a staff infection came from urine! I found this at http://kidshealth.org/teen/infections/bacterial_viral/staph.html "How Do People Get Staph Infections? In teens, most staph infections are minor skin infections. People with skin problems like burns or eczema may be more likely to get staph skin infections. People can get staph infections from contaminated objects, but staph bacteria often spread through skin-to-skin contact — the bacteria can be spread from one area of the body to another if someone touches the infected area. Staph infections can spread from person to person among those who live close together in group situations (such as in college dorms). Usually this happens when people with skin infections share things like bed linens, towels, or clothing. Warm, humid environments can contribute to staph infections, so excessive sweating can increase someone's chances of developing an infection." Lots of the more serious staph infections happen in surgery if everything isn't sterile. But, thankfully, most doctors and hospitals take utmost care to make sure a surgery patient doesn't come out with staph.

Thanks for your added information. My friend who caught the staph infection weeks after her surgey was bed ridden and had problems with bed wetting so hers may have been caused by urine.

Hey cmathias, That's not exactly true. Pink eye is cause by bacteria coming in contact with the eye. I don't know where you got that information! I've had pink eye numerous times and I can assure you I wash my hands thoroughly! I also was a medical assistant. There are all kinds of ways that you can get pink eye. It is extremely contagious and if you come in contact with someone who has it you can get it easily from that person by touching something that they have touched. And staff infections are caused by a number of things also and most certainly not just by urine. I don't know where you got this misinformation, but it is totally incorrect! You need to research it again! This is false information that is totally out of context!

LOL Opal! I didn't say it was the sole cause of pink eye and staff infections so it isn't totaly incorrect. Even you yourself just stated that they are not the only causes. This wasn't meant to get every one who has ever had pink eye ralled up. It was just something my Doctor and I discussed. I appreciate the added info supplied but that doesn't mean I am going to stop believing what he told me. Sorry that this discussion offended you.

That isn't how it always happens there is many other ways to get it, also it is contagious. When I was in highscool my mom was gone for a week so we stayed with this family and one of her kids got pink eye then my sister and I got it, so I told my sister to throw out her contacts and she did not so she got it again as well as myself. Washing your hands is really important if you do get it though or no someone who does have it.

I have had pink eye before, and I can assure you it was a viral infection, caused by a virus just like the flu. There is viral conjunctivitis (pink eye) and bacterial. It is contagious, and I was kept from going back to work for two days while it got better. My doctor told me I got it from another person who had viral pink eye, just like you would catch a cold from someone who may have sneezed at you. So even though you COULD get an eye infection from rubbing your dirty hands in your eyes, I got mine from a virus, same as if I had caught a cold. As to the staph infection, you get that from the staphylococcus bacteria, which is usually transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, and contaminated objects. Usually patients who have had surgery are the most susceptible to serious infections. In most people, it shows up as skin infections, and is easier to remedy. And yes, it is always good to keep your hands clean, and I make it a habit :)
