Voodoo- Louisiana- Retribution?

United States
September 2, 2008 4:54am CST
I heard a remark yesterday questioning whether Gustav following on the devastation of Kristina on New Orleans/Louisiana is God's retribution for the the widespread practice of Voodoo/Black Magic in that area. That never even crossed my mind but it did give me food for thought. What do you think? Possible or just superstition?

I think its just ridiculous....especially considering the fact that Vodou is NOT Black Magic.....

Thank you both for your input and as I am neither a student or practitioner of either Voodoo or Black magic I do not know or really care what the difference is between them. Although getting a voodoo doll of someone you do not like and sticking pins in them to cause the unsuspecting person harm does have the indication of some kind of nasty magic.

I don't honestly know who would have started a rumor like that. Unfortunately I tend to believe its some kind of biased religious or a hate group. Most people no matter what religion they are believe in a loving God. Not a God that puts his vengeance upon his children. I believe this with every inch of my soul. God teaches by example. If in fact there is something to black magic. WHich I think there is. It isnt God that is doing it. I am sure of that. Black magic involves satan or Idolistic worships. If anything, thats what is doing it. Not GOD. dl

The Christian fundie groups usually are the ones to start that nonsense..they did it with the Tsunami, they did it with Katrina and so on...Pretty pathetic if you ask me..

I agree that it probably started with one of these biased religious groups.

No, it is all just coincidence. These people are just very unlucky. This is not because of the things they do in their are. Think of the plague, think of the Earthquakes in California, and think of the tornados in the Mid-western United States, did any of these people ask for these kinds of problems? No, who would ask for this? Come on people! Not all people in certain areas ask for their problems, or have it coming to them. It just happens. Things are just random. Life is random. Sure, there is karma, where "what goes around, comes around", "to every action, there is a reaction", and "what goes up, must come down", but life is mostly just a lot of randomness. I believe that life is random because look at all of the good people that are taken from us as well, you mean to tell me that they deserved to be taken from this world? Some of these people have not done anything to deserve this. You mean to tell me that someone who has done no harm to anyone deserves to be punished? What about the children of New Orleans? Think about them. What have they done?

I don't think it has much to do with retribution but I think if your going to live in a state formed like a huge bowl right near the ocean you should plan on flooding happening. It's one of those obvious things like if you live in Florida plan on hurricanes and if you live in California plan on earthquakes. I remember when Katrina happened and ppl were on the news going "I can't believe it flooded" and I'm thinking "Dummy, you live in a state formed like a huge bowl...duh, what did you think would happen?" I think the whole retribution thing is like blaming bad luck when you lose your job or something...it's just an easy thing to blame. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I heard this more than one time when I was working on the coast after Katrina. I do believe that God punishes us for doing wrong, but he isnt going to punish you for what I did wrong or vice versa. Besides, too many people blame God for things that happen bad when it is only a product of THEIR bad choices. I do not believe that God is responsible for what happened to NOLA. NOLA is responsible for that. They knew for ages that the levies wouldnt hold if they had a bad storm, and they chose to spend their money elsewhere. (Well, at least the politians did)

You can blame god for trying to kill people as he supposedly did in the bible. God does not control storms or anything on this earth. Voodoo does not work or do anything either. Fear is perceived differently by many people. The gods are out to get the evil or mother nature is on a rampage or voodoo has backfired. The world evolves as always. Yes there are more storms than before but as the earth ages and the ozone depletes and all the nuclear testing and factory emissions, its no wonder things are getting worse!

Superstition. I do not think God operates that way. I do not see Him sitting high and mighty on his throne, lightening bolts in hand zapping all the mislead, mischosen people. I am sure that wrong practices grieve Him, but unless he sends a warning by a prophet, I do not believe that God is going to destroy people willy nilly. He did not do this in the time of Jonah, and Ninevah was certainly a sinful city. He sent a prophet to preach repentance, and the people listened. After the flood of Noah God sent the rainbow to promise that the world would never again be destroyed by floods. If God were in the business of destroying communities for evil, it would be a whole lot more than New Orleans. He lets us destroy ourselves by making dark and uninformed choices.

Yikes, I can't help thinking how totally ridiculous that sounds and no that is just superstitious mumbo jumbo. If people are linking voodoo/black magic and the reason for Katrina, then Gustav, then maybe those same people should link all the fires in California, the floods in the mid-west, etc., etc to voodu/black magic, pagan/wiccan practices..Or how about catastrophic earthquakes like they had in China???....As far as I know there haven't been any dire natural catastrophes in Massachusetts, where there is a large pagan/wiccan population once more.....ironically in Salem where the biggest witch hunts were done in the late 1600/1700s
