There was a man standing on the corner with a bike holding a sigh saying:
HUNGRY TRAVELING WILL WORK.! Would you help?
I was going to take my kids to the mall shopping. My son always
drives. He said where do you want to stop to get gas? Walmart will
be fine I said. I told him to put $40.00 in the gas tank.
Then I thought about it. To myself I said, I can make it on $30.00
of gas for the week.
I couldn't think of eating at Olive Garden and shopping, spending all
that money I really didn't need to, while that man was out in the ran.
I could give something. Even if I couldn't change his world.
So I gave the extra $10.00.
I usually buy non perishable food for people like that, so they can't
buy beer or cigarettes with my money.
Would you help?

i think you are right as these people generally misuse the money given in charity. They should be bought utilities instead of giving them money. I think money encourages them for more and more charity and also spoils them. Instead the necessary utilities will make them a better person.

Working for it would make him a better person. I suppose
I could have ask my husband to let the man mow our yard
the next day. It was raining, That would have been hard with
wet grass. It seems we always have excuses.
There may be some reason, as a mental disability that some
people are homeless and can't hold down a job. We just
never know.

You are a very nice person to help someone out like that, a lot nicer than me I fear as I would not. I never give to street beggars only because usually the reason they are on the street in the first place is because they have a habit of some sort.
Also if he wanted to work for some food, instead of wasting his time writing a sign out and standing on a corner why not go and ask around the shops. Someone may have given him a couple of hours work for a meal. It was nice of you though.

Well, first of all, this man was traveling. He was not very clean.
Would you hire a dirty homeless men to work in your shop? I don't
think so. He may have tried to get work locally. I didn't ask. The
sign did say will work. We don't know his story. Or how he got there.
I just felt like I needed to help.

Yesterday as my husband and I left Applebee's (we rarely go to this type resturant due to tight budget) But my husband and ordained pastor had a call to do his first wedding and the couple wanted to meet us there to discuss their vows and prepare for the service. They paid us $50 in advance and paid for our meal. As we got ready to leave a man with a sandal ready to break approached us asking if we could help him with $20 to buy a heater hose for his truck he indicated the truck sitting in the parking lot. He had enough gas to get home the 250 miles to Yakima, Wa but his heater hose had burst and he was stranded with a U-Haul trailer full of his father's belongings. His dad had just passed away and he was broke. Having been there we understood the situation. In the truck were three boys between six and fourteen and a woman.
My husband hesitated because he is also a substitute teacher and school has just started and we don't have our mortgage payment or utilities for next month yet. We are praying he gets the sub work, he needs 8 days this month to pay our bills for October.
My husband is also on Social Security disability so we live on $893 in the summer and save $200 per month through the school year for summer expenses and try and pay our mortgage a month ahead. We will get $75 more for the wedding. I just got a gift card for $50 from a friend. So I told my husband to let them have the $20 and the man took our address and said he would send the $20 back when he got home. If he doesn't that is fine too. God knows if he was lying or telling the truth. But I believe he was sincere. We have been there ourself more than once and asked for the mercy of strangers. What goes around comes around.
I believe we will have the money for our bills next month, so yes I will help. There have been times I did not help I had this gut feeling not to, others I feel that we should. Sometimes you have an inner voice that tells you when it is right or not.
God said there would be times we entertain or have angels come to us and we are unaware they are angels. I know of at least two times this happened and know afterward they were angels one left $50 in my truck seat and just disappeared the other helped save my home from total destruction by fire. Both times we were abundantly blessed afterwards.
If you don't help others when your inner voice tells you that you should you may not get help when you needed it. If you do often you have good things return to you. If nothing more than you felt a good feeling of helping a fellow man or woman have a better day.

I agree with you so much. We had a Study in our vacation bible school a couple years ago about
helping strangers in need. If it could be an angel, and you didn't help what would happen?
Thanks for you time to respond.

Hi walk,
I have always heart for people like that but I haven't tried helping here yet, my hubby will always discourage me, a lot of people said that they know someone who has a nice car and his job is only begging from people...ANyway, I love to do it when I was in our Country, I have always biscuits or candy in my purse for street childrens we have, I also don't give money! I admire your generosity!

Thanks.
I probably should not have gave money. I was kind of
pressed for time. I should have went in the store and
bought food for him.
Sometimes I just fill the need to help. But if I see him
there again, I want help. I only help a homeless person
once normally. I fill that they should be trying to help them
selves some.

Yes I would help the man out, I would not want him to work for me, as I don't trust strangers, but I would probably get him something to eat or give him a little money. These days a lot of people are down on their luck.
