What do you call your mother? When we were small, it was "Mommy" and later, just "Mom". My ex-husband used to call his mother "Ma" - but she didn't like it very much - the kids later called her "Granny".
I've heard some people address their's as "Mother" although that seems to be a little formal for my liking!

I try not to call her anything, but when I am talking about her to someone else it is my mother. There are personal reasons behind this we were not close when I was growing up.

I understand completely! My mother has a mental illness that causes her to be very paranoid about certain things, including thinking that people who are close to her are out to get her. Both my sister and I have a limited amount of contact with her, mostly by her choice.

I was raised by my grandmother, who we all called Ma, including my mother - but only when talking TO her. When talking about her, we called her Nana. My mother is and has always been "Mum". I love that three of my kids - at 15, 18 and 25 - still call me 'Mummy' most of the time. My 22 year old son calls me "Mom", as opposed to "Mum", and my 16 year old son calls me "Mumma". I think it's neat that all but the 22 year old still hold onto their childish names for me even though our relationship with each other is very respectful and adult.

I remember when we were kids that we hug on to calling her Mommy at home long after we started calling her Mom when our friends were around - I guess we didn't want them to think that we were babies because we still called her Mommy!

I call my mom, MOM. My kids call me mom or mommy. My son who is 14 calls me Mother. It sounds funny when he calls me that, but he means nothing disrespectful by it. My kids will also call me carebear at times. This is when they are joking around with me.

I forgot, sometimes my daughter, (29) calls me Mama, usually very drawn out, with a question mark at the end.

That is a cute name - isn't it interesting how kids can come up with such names!

Sometimes it's 'mom', but for the most part it's 'Mimi'. My sister's first husband called her that long before any grandkids came along, and it just stuck. So everyone refers to her as 'mimi'. Probably I refer to her, when I'm speaking to her as Mom. I agree with you that 'Mother' sounds a little to formal.

That is a cute name! My first husband called my mom by her first name, but my husband calls her Mom. I always called my MILs by their first name.

I think I have called my mom "Mom" since I was a little kid. Maybe when I was a toddler I called her "Mommy", but not past about 5 if I did. I will have to ask her. My son has always called me "Mom" unless he wants something and then it is "Mommy". My 19 month old daughter calls me "Mama".

That's the way mine are - they're 33, 30 and 21 and if they call me Mommy, I know they want me to do something for them!

If we were really trying to get her attention we would say "MOTHER!" and sometimes if she was engaged in conversations with adults where she wasn't listening, we would call her by her first name - she never liked for us to do that, so she would answer!

Ive always called my mother...MAMA...that's what she liked me to call her and that's what I've been accostumed to...my children though call her Mama Angie...since she didn't want to be called Grandma. My children call me mama to so to avoid confusion they would our first names to the word Mama.

I actually like being called Grandma. My daughter's boys will add my name after to designate between their various Grandmas, but my son's children just say Grandma and if there's more than one present, we all answer!
My daughter's cons, however, designate between me as their actual Grandma and my ex-husband's wife by calling her Nannie (which is a variation of her first name).

Yes, unfortunately, sometimes us Moms tend to tune out the kids - no matter how old they are!

Isn't is funny what we grow up to call our relatives? I call my mom Mom, unless I am mad or frustrated with her and then call her mother (kind of like her using my middle name when she is mad or frustrated with me??!!). My mom's mom's name was Anne and we grew up calling her Granny Annie!

My mom has always Grandma "Weese" to all the grandchildren - her name is Louise and the first grandchild couldn't say the L, so it just came out that way - and stuck with the rest of the clan.

I almost always call my mother "Mom". I don't know when I stopped calling her "Mommy", but I can't have been too old. I sometimes call her "Mama" - it all depends on what mood I'm in. I love hearing my children call me "Mommy", but they are really little, and I'm sure it'll get shortened to "Mom" sooner than I would like.

I don't remember when my own made that switch, but I know my grandsons had quite saying Mommy and were saying Mom probably by the time they were 5 or so.

I call my mother Mom or Mama. I don't ever remember calling her Mommy, although, I may have as a very small child. The grand kids all call her Nana. My son called me Mommy until he was in his early 20's. I thought it was kind of cute, and funny. He now calls me Mama. My daughter calls me Mom or Mama and always has. I think I would feel like something was wrong if my kids were to call me Mother. I agree, it is just too formal for me.

hi newtondak
i m use to call mommy.
mother remain mother whatever we are calling her.
her love remain same.
i think the for ur mother matters instead of ma,mother, mommy
people having different names for god.
some are saying bhagwan, allah ,jesus, god, whatever but............
god remains same in all religions.
so GOD HIMSELF said that i can't present everywhere so i created MOTHER.
thats why whatever the name u are assigning to ur god(mother).
take care.

Each family, each area of the country and each country has different terms to address their parents and none or intended to be disrespectful - just different that that of others.

I have friends who called their Mom's by their first names, but my mother wouldn't hear of it - she said she earned the title and she expected us to use it!
