I look in my mirror and noticing....ah, yup--it's way past time for me to "do" my hair....uh, you know....color it? I've been very lucky that I'm one of those people that never had much grey hairs...but do get them...so I never bothered coloring my hair that often...could actually get by with NOT coloring my hair every month or so and would just do it maybe twice a year. But I'm real hesitant about coloring my hair now. The last two times I did my hair I had an obvious allergic reaction...yeah, yeah, I know, you're supposed to do that patch test...but I had been using the same brand and same color for ages and it never bothered me (Nice 'N Easy)...but like I said the last two times I had really lousy reactions from the very same brand and color...my scalp felt itchy, was blotchy, red, and it felt that way about a month later. Okay so like I said I do want to do my hair again, but don't want that same reaction....are there any hair colorings that aren't so harsh? That I won't have the same reaction?...A more natural brand maybe? What brand do you use, and did you ever have a bad reaction from a hair dye?

Hi pye, Oh dear, its one of those things that we women have to go through, I use a brand called 'Smart' because I can't use other colours, it wouldn't suit me. You can go to the hair saloon and ask for advice, they may be able to help. Bright Blessings. Tamara

Hi pye, You are one clever lady, my mother used to cut her own hair and dye her own hair but I can't, I will make a mess of my hair, I have a hairdressing friend and she has her own harisaloon and she comes to my house to do my hair for me I am not allowed to touch it or she will go mad with me, 'Smart' one of the product they use in the saloon and we can buy it in our shops. Bright Blessings Tamara

Hello pye, It's way past time for me to color my hair too. I have natural red hair and if you know anything about red hair or very many people with red hair, then you know that red hair tends get gray or white hairs in it from very early on. I've had white hairs on and off since I was 18. At first it was just a few here and there every couple years or so and I didn't have to dye it because I could get away with just plucking them. (no 50 more did not grow back in their place, lol) Then when I reached my mid twenties it was to the point where I needed to color my hair about every 4 months. However, I have not colored my hair in the past two years! I've either been busy or broke or something has come up...whatever. My hair is still red but I have a whole lot of white hairs peppered throughout it and it looks...well...icky...Kind of looks like very non-subtle highlights..white ones! lol Anyways, I know what it's like to be past due on coloring your hair. I plan on doing mine within the next few months. Luckily I have never had any allergic reactions to any hair dye. I'm sorry, I usually just use whatever I can afford at the time and I do not know much about it so I do not have any idea what would be best for you to use or what a natural brand would be. Good luck

I think people with blonde hair can get by without dying their hair don't you..kind of blends in. Yes, I used to yank out the grey hairs too, but now way too many to do that unless I want to look partially bald...LOL

Hehe..Yeah I think you may be right about the blonde hair! I have real thick hair so I don't think I'd be partially bald if I plucked all the white hairs out but it would definitely take me a long time to do so at this point, at least a full day, maybe longer. lol.

Well I went to my Walgreens hoping they might have had something natural..nope...maybe over the weekend I'll try the health food store...if they don't have anything I might have to order online..I did find a few websites that sells natural hair color with all natural ingredients...but as I figured...cost a heck of a lot....

I think my one mission in a week or so is just look at all the labels of hair dyes and try and find the one the most natural in ingredients--maybe even a health food store...though I bet I'll pay a king's ransom as they are always expensive

I had a reaction a long time ago from... drumroll Nice N Easy Seriously, I think that's what it was. Right now I'm using Excellence and not having any problems. But I'm sure there are more natural hair colors out there. You can suddenly develop an allergy to something that never bothered you before. I am having that problem with food. :-( Lucky you for not being too gray. I get a lovely stripe if I go too long without coloring. Maybe I should go blond? lol

I think blondes can get away with grey/white hair as it does blend in more...I did go blonde once...ewwwwwwww....I was born with black hair, and it turned a natural dark brown which is the color I usually always color it Yes strange how we can develop allergies to something that never used to bother us before.

I think you are pained of coloring your hair and you got allergic. I think every hair color has some type of allergic sensation and it do not harm I think you can try some herbal hair natural color.

There's a henna product, Colora, that's available. It comes in other colors than red, so you should be able to find one to your liking.

you know, it might be worth it to write to the company and ask them if they have changed the formula. these allergic reaction symptoms can happen due to a formulary change, hormonal change, etc. i've not done mine at home. i have a salon do it. i always "thought" nice n easy was gentle, too.

I have not. In fact I absolutely quit using hair color over two years ago. I am more gray than anything. I would check into some henna based products in a health food department or store. I notice my grocer has henna products. My sister used this a million years ago, as it was all mom would let her use.

I'm beginning to think a health food store would be my best bet for getting something natural...I just don't want that allergic reaction again.

Hey there! Don't you wish we could color it and it would last forever? hehe I use L'Oreal but I was thinking the Garnier Nutrisse may be a product that will do well for you. It has grape seed and advacado oil and other fruit oils for natural conditioning. I haven't used this in a long time and I think the reason I didn't continue with is was that I couldn't find a good match (color) for my natural shade. I need to check this out again :) Good luck!!

I guess I'll just have to start looking at all the hair dyes and see which seems the most natural...And yes it would be SO nice if we could just color our hair once and it would last forever.

I like Natural Instincts for an at home product. No amonia and it smells pretty. The store near me doesn't carry a huge selection of it but they have a nice variety of colors (it's cheap but good so our store would rather sell the other more expensive good product for twice the price). Just make sure you are patient and do the allergy test first this time!

I was looking up the Natural Instincts website and notice it too it made by Clairol like Nice "n Easy and yes it does recommend an allergy test..which probably means that's out for me..just don't want to go through that again of getting a reaction

i've had good luck with l'oreal (got grey streaks at 15) nice n easy gave me an itchy reaction from hell too.i think they changed something. as far as natural-you could try henna (it'll get somewhat dark the longer you leave it on,i believe)and i've had friends make dark hair wash from walnut shells. only thing about henna is you have to wait until the chemical based dye has washed out-it does something funky if you put it over it.

Maybe I'll just check out a health food store and see what they got, or at least look at all the dyes at my local Walgreen's and see if they have anything more natural...Yes, Nice 'N Easy must have changed something since as you say I had a reaction to it from hell...wanted to rip my scalp off...LOL

My suggestion to you would be to go to a Sally's beauty supply and talk to some of the workers there they can tell you what will be the gentlest die the have then all you have to do is buy the duy and the purple bottle of hicky jig Sorry can't remember what it's called but you mix it with the dye and then use it. I have been doing my hair like this for a while now and the color is fabulous when I use the red and I have little to no damage.

I just looked at the Sally Beauty supply for a store locater but its way too far from me since I don't have a car...and I don't want to order it on-line in case the ingredients are the same as the Nice 'n Easy..I'll take a look in regular stores though, just in case they have it.

I have just done a drastic hair colour change, I have gone from being blonde to dark red! It looks pretty cool actually and really suits me, so I think I will stick with that for a while. I think that was from the nice and easy range, should have wrote it down really for next time I do it. Anyway, garnier fructis are pretty good, they are more natural than some of the others that are about. They have a really nice smell to them too and do not stink as bad as some of the others that are about. They have a nice range of colours too. What colour you going?

I've always used a dark brown which is more like my natural hair color...I once did go the blonde route (no pun intended) and looked hideous...so much for being a blonde and having more fun...LOL

Right now I have a much more basic problem. I need a haircut badly and don't have the cash to get the one I really want. I just hate all this hair on my head and I'm overdue for my monthly cut by about two weeks. The place I go to is expensive but they give a really good cut. What I'm determined to do is not get a bad haircut. So the hair stays until I can afford the good stuff.

Why not be bold and cut your own hair? LOL. I've been cutting my own hair for years, even since I was fifteen or so...the last time I had my hair cut in a salon they did such a lousy job..that I vowed never to get it cut at a salon ever again.

I've only dyed my hair once several years ago - I used one of those "washout" conconctions. I didn't have any problems, but I decided it wasn't worth it - I've EARNED every one of these grey hairs and dammit I'm gonna show them!

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you..the name of the chemical that seems to be responsible for a lot of allergic reactions is Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD)

Nope never tried it....the other day I did go to Walgreens and was reading the labels of all the hair color products....they all seem to have this one ingredient, starts with a "P"..and a mile long...been told that is usually the culprit...think Herbal Essence has it too.

Never have and never will color my hair. I had it permed twice in my lifetime, the last being over 14yrs. ago. I prefer my hair the way it is. They do have color shampoos out now thou, pye. Not sure where you can buy them at but you just shampoo the color in and rinse. Color is supposed to stay till next shampooing, I guess.

i am one of those who don't have much grey hair too. i do get the occasionally white hair sticking out but i'm fine with it. i rarely dye my hair because of the damage it causes. i used to have jet black hair but now it's a dark brown even though the last time i dyed my hair was more than five years ago! if you still want to dye your hair you might want to try henna. it's made from natural ingredients and greatly favoured by indians. i've tried that before and have to say that it doesn't dry my hair too much. henna is not so much a brand rather than a type of dye. cheers

I think that natural solutions are the best answers to a natural evolution such as the natural dye... Also natural extensions such as the italian ones http://www.venushair.it ca be the solutions when the numbers of hairs becomes low numbers...
