Is this a good idea?

I have been tossing around ideas of what I want to do to either upgrade and buy a DSLR or just buy the conversion lenses for my current camera. Well buying a new DSLR is a bit of a stretch for me financially (I only work half the year) but I got to looking on Craig's list and ebay and that is an option. Then i got to thinking I might want to check out the pawn shops around here. I did buy 2 lenses for my SLR from a pawn shop right up the road from where I am and they worked great. So my question is this do you think that it would be a good idea to look and see if they have anything?

Of course! And eBay, too, but there I would make sure the item was covered the buyer's protection plan for an item of this value and delicacy.

I was thinking that too cause I sure as heck wouldn't want to buy something from ebay get it here only to find out there is something wrong with it or it got damaged in the shipping. I am going to check out some of the pawn shops and see what they have to offer.

It is definitely a good idea! What brand of SLR do you have? If you get a DSLR with the same lens mount, then the lenses should work for your digital camera! Then you could save money by just buying the camera body. But yah, definitely check out the pawn shop and see what they have! You may also want to check out local camera stores. They often have all kinds of used equipment!

I have a 20+ year old minolta that I have about 12 lenses for and a 10 year old minolta with 3 lenses.

Thanks trickiwoo, you have been a huge help! I will be researching and looking at my lenses before I buy the camera while I am saving my money up.

Ok, then you'll probably want to go with a Sony DSLR. I'm pretty sure that all the Minolta mount lenses will work on the Sony DSLRs! (You might want to double check on that though. You may even want to bring a lens or two to a camera store and see if they'll let you try it on a Sony DSLR to see if it works!) If so, then buying a Sony DSLR will save you a lot of money as you can use many of the lenses you already own!

I have never bought anything at a pawn shop, but I know people who do all the time. It seems like good economy to me, if you can try before you buy. It seems a lot better for this to be going on and you buying it and using it than having it sit in some pawn shop.

I suggest you go get a new DSLR. New DSLR today have very good technology. I'm sure you'll love the new technologies embedded into the new DSLR Cameras. Life for example, Nikon just released their new DSLR camera the D90. This camera comes with ang 18-105mm VR lens which is a good walk around lens. The VR - Vibration Reduction technology is worth it, it lessens the camera shake. You'll notice the difference of lenses that has no vibration reduction technology compared to the lenses with the Vibration Technology. Taking sharp pictures would be very easy.

Go for it! Sometimes a pawn shop is a great place to find things rather cheap.
