My elderly neighbour was told about a thing called witch hazel from a healthfood shop, it actuall shrinks hemmroids, she had to apply it frequently even going to bed with some witch hazel soaked in it and slept with it in in the area of the problem, it really did shrink it so it wasn't really a big problem anymore...

A website I just checked said you can even get pre moistened towelettes, at Walgreens.

What worked for me after I had my son (TERRIBLE hemmrhoids) was Tuck's Pads. If you aren't familiar with them, they're these little (usually round) cool wet pads that you can either wipe with, or, if you use with a panty liner or thin pad, you can even leave them in your underwear for a while. I found them really soothing.

My grandma always used corn starch to deal with the itching and pain. She did end up having to go in and have surgery eventually. Good luck at getting rid of them. Using a stool softener without a laxative helped also.

I am fortunate to have never had this problem, but I did a little bit of research. Of course the medical sites say warm sitz baths with no added ingredient, just water, then it says see your doctor, and it says Preparation H. Some alternative approaches were in another website. First of all, to take strain off your bowels, get a footstool about six inches tall and put your feet on it so your knees are raised when you are on the toilet. For itching they recommended Apple Cider Vinegar, and they swear it does not burn. Or Aloe Vera Gel, which is not supposed to burn, but I have had it happen. Of course, it mentioned Witch Hazel, like I said earlier.

I used to have so much trouble with hemorrhoids, Grandma, but I have not been bothered by them in a very long time now. The best natural remedy I can think of is witch hazel. Try it and you will see!

You opened pores with hot water and a petroleum product was there. The problem with a lot of ointments is the petroleum base for some people. Sounds like you also probably had open wounds when you put it on. My Doctor told me to eat All Bran cereal every day. Strangely enough, it works. Not sure if it would work for you, not sure if it's available in your area or if you have celiac or anything that would contra-indicate it for you. A friend of ours uses a rubber inflatable "donut" that helps with sitting. I also find that walking, fruit, and trying a different position when going to the bathroom helps. But I'm me, not you, and Prep H did work for me. But I read the cautions on the side and one is that if you have high bloop pressure, talk to a pharmasist. She told me, no more than three days at a time. Builds up in the system and can elevate blood pressure. If you actually itch the area and then put something on it-it will burn, but if you put something on before you compromise the skin (like if you slid on tarmack with your skin, then put anything on the wound, you get the picture)it is less likely to hurt. There are a lot of anti-itch meds out there, but many aren't supposed to go down there. Good luck and I hope you find something that makes you feel better.

My husband is going through that same thing right now. He's scheduled for surgery this Thursday. When he was in total agony, I went out and bought him everything I could think of. The two things that worked best for him were a sitz bath and witchhazel. He said the witchhazel really cooled down the burning and itching. It didn't last too long, but reapplying it frequently worked very well. In the sitz bath he used cool water with some witchhazel in it. He also used Preparation H wipes for after using the toilet. He, like you, did not like the Preparation H itself, but the wipes really did help. Also, make sure to eat a lot of fiber. Keep your bowels loose... not like diarrhea, but soft. This advice came from his doctor. It has helped him, but his are so serious that he needs surgery. He has no other choice, since he's had this intense flare-up for about 2 months now. Good luck to you! I certainly hope you're feeling better very soon!

I have never tried it but I have heard that you can peel a potato and cut in half and rub that on it and that will soothe it.

ouch! i am sorry to hear that you have hemmrhoids! they are awful, i know. i had them toward the ends of both of my pregnancies. mine really did not itch, but they really hurt! and i seemed to try everything, too. the bath didn't really work for me, either, but i found out later that you need to take a cool/lukewarm bath. if the water is too warm it just irritates them even more (which was bad for me b/c i like my baths hot!). i also found that the moist towelettes helped to soothe. every time you use the bathroom just use the wipes and pat the area. don't wipe! i hope they go away for you! good luck!
