I'm going to have to fix my sidewalk

It seems as though my city has thrown away their responsibilities to fix sidewalks and have left it to the citizens of the city to do such work. Most cities will at least cover the costs for you to repair it, but mine won't even do that. I wonder if anyone else has had to fix their sidewalk due to a city ordinance or if the city repaired it. Any tips for fixing a sidewalk would be greatly appreciated.
