I guess we all have different likes and dislikes. So, when you want to watch a movie, what influences you to watch it? Your favorite actor/actress? Director? Movie reviews? friends comments? Are you open minded about a movie? Or do you go with expectations of seeing a movie of a specific genre like comedy, action, drama etc? Please share your opinions.

first thing i may say is the trailer. if it is a very inviting and very interesting trailer then i will watch it based on curiosity. when a freind told me that this kind of movie is a great one then i try to watch it too. i can say i am somehow openminded in some movies but when the first 20 minutes bore me i just turn it off.

when it comes to old movies i rely on my mom. she is 76 years old this coming october. when it comes to old movie i ask her suggetion. sometimes she does not remember the tittle anymore but still remember the actors and the story. so based on what she said i will search it on the net and when i finally get the tittle i go to rentals and rent it.

What about old movies? Do you use a library to watch old movies?

Well for me, mostly it depends on who I am with. If I'm with my friends usually it would be horror or comedy. If I'm with my mom it would be mushy Filipino movies. hehehe. If I'm with a special someone anything will do. lol But if I were to choose, I want those intriguing movies with endings that are unpredictable. Movies that trigger my mind to think.

True .we have different preferences and though I watch amny movies on tv if it is a matter of going to the theatre then I have certain specifics. I normally choose the movies based on the actor and secondly, the director.; there are exceptions like great hit comedies or hit movies based on good songs. Even in the case of good songs it has to have a favourite director of mine. SAY for eg, if it is a Rajini kant film then I would see it if he has the main role.if it is a Kamal film, it must be a thriller or fun oriented entertainment. There are exceptions like the film being directed by Manirathnam and being vey popular like[ ' Alaipayudhe". I did not go to the theatre to see kannathil muthamitall though it is by Maniratnam. Essentially the film must be an entertainer[a light masala] Jamesbond movies are something which we never miss. Then there is one exception that defies all rules; namely, if my son wants to see a movie and he suggests that we should all go together I would go and see it -eg Superman, Spiderman, Darknight/batman, Hobbit[these I really liked],Kavialvidhanaa kehena[I loathed this hindi movie but I just tagged along for company] you name it that is all. This is a standard rule-whatever he chooses we would do.My husband and I do not need any more preferences. If it is on tv I would watch comedies and romances any number of times-[especially the old ones ]If the movie has the dialogues written by Crazy Mohan I would watch it again and again because I love to be lighthearted.Romances, action based thrillers and comedies are generally my favourites and I have given the carte blanche preference also. What are your likes?

Banner does play an important part if it is an AVM Production. Essentially they produce only hit and non boring movies. The old ones have great songs and great action in them . Secondly any movie can even be a low budget movie like Poovellam kettu paar. This was a very sweet film. The movie must have some pleasant faces in them . Bhagyaraj's old films are also my favourites. Ilayaraja's music is another magnet that lures me.

I can understand when you don't have any preferences if your son wants to go see a movie with family . I too love comedy and family drama, but I am not too much influenced by actors because I don't have favorites. It is really the story that interests me(of course I am talking about movies other than comedy because these days very few tamil comedy films have a sensible story ). I love stories than can inspire.. "Unnal mudiyum thambi" is one of my favorites. Recently, I saw a movie about Helen Keller and her teacher(I don't remember the title). It made me cry. If it wasn't for that teacher, we wouldn't have had the Helen Keller that we know now. "Kannathil Muthamittal" was a good story. I made the mistake of seeing "Thalapathi" for Manirathnam and decided I would read the story review before seeing a movie again... so much violence... I do like romances too if they are not too tragic and have some light humour in them... Mozhi is one of my favorites. These days I would love to watch movies that the whole family can sit around and watch. It is getting more and more harder these days to find a decent movie to watch with children.

I will for surely read a reviews about the movie over the internet or magazine. with that, I will have the idea whether it's a good movie or not. I ask friend's opinion sometimes. I also consider their past movies.. like tom hunks, he do have lots of good movies, so sometimes, it influences me to watch movies because of their past movies.

maybe it's the story. of course, other factors will be bring into considered like director, actor or actress, reviews, etc. but the most important reason is story or maybe you call 'script'. have a nice day!

We recently took a movie out for rental that was supposed to be a great movie, well it was a lot of rubbish, and we said then that we should trust our instincts and go on gut reaction when we are choosing the movie. So many times the media, the press and the cinemas themselves have hyped a certain movie up,all to find that when we have watched it we have been very disappointed. But I have to admit that something with a good laugh in it appeals to me greatly,it is really refreshing to watch something funny, there is one or tow films that are in the cinemas at the moment that I want to see ,but I will be waiting till they come out on DVD.

I see what you say... been there myself. That is why although I read movie reviews nowadays, I still keep an open mind because there have been real good movies to my liking that got bad reviews and vice versa.

I am never bothered about what actor or actresses are in it, I mainly go for the genre which for me is horror, if it's a horror film and 18 certificate then I will choose it, the gorier and scarier the better, trouble is my friends don't like horror films so I have to go on my own to watch them or wait till they come out on Sky. I don't tend to take much notice of reviews, but if someone for example on Mylot recommends a film to me then I will watch it, I do like other genres like scifi and will always go and see the latest Bond film but I hate slushy romance I will avoid those like the plague. I also like fantasy like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

It depends on what mood I'm in. If I'm feeling depressed and reflective, I'll watch a serious movie like Withering Heights. I've never entirely read that book by the way. I should. Or Bowling for Columbine. If I just want a funny movie, like I do this Wednesday when I'm waiting for the chair repair guy all day, I'll watch My Cousin Vinny or Back to the Future. It's also influenced by who I'm going to be watching the movie with. I know some of my friends and workers don't like certain movies so I won't watch it around them.

Hmm. when you watch serious movies when feeling depressed, will it cheer you up? Will you be inspired to go there and fight it, whatever your cause of depression is?

I am influenced by the countries that a movie is filmed in. My friends took me to see The Motor Cycle Diaries because is is a journey through South America. I like specific genres like action as long as it is not too scary, drama it is about an interesting topic and comedy if it is sensible humor. It doesn't matter to me which actors and actresses are in it. When I was a teenager I did like to see films with Tom Cruise in. I don't like horror movies because they are too scary. I prefer 15+ or PG films that 18+. My brother in law says that swearing is weak language and I agree with him. I don't like to hear bad languages and movies. Sometimes it is unavoidable and I can ignore it,

I am almost like you, except that the location that a movie is filmed in, is not an influence to me. You are right about weak language. If you want really one factor to get me pi$$ed off with a movie, it is weak language. Thanks for your response.

The story mainly. And sometimes, the actor/actresses also matter. I like light romantic comedies, although I watch mystery, suspense, adventure, and others, but NEVER horror. I hate horror movies.

Hi, when I want to rent or buy a movie, I always choose a movie by seen if there good actors acting on it.. like Denzel Washington or Edward Norton.. I do like also movies of action and science fiction, but I'm very selective and I can bore in about 5 minutes.. I know how to recognize a good movie by only seen a few minutes of it.. If in that interval of time it doesn't get my attention, it will never have..

Hmm.. you seem like a tough guy to interest. I guess directors should keep people like you in mind when they start a movie. Then more of our movies will be interesting from the start and they won't drag.. so less waste of our time. Thanks for your response.

War movies!! ... Hmmm.. I haven't come across too many war movies.. maybe since I am not interested in war, I haven't seen much around. Do you have a separate genre for such movies, or does it come in action/thriller movies?
