People of Mylot, Do you READ discussions and responses before responding?

I have seen many people give responses that do not relate to the topic at all. I'm sure many here have seen this. I have also seen people respond with something like: "I AGREE with responder A......", but when you go on to read the rest of their response, it clearly DISAGREES with responder A. Have you noticed both of these situations? What do you think when you read a response not related to the topic? What do you think when you read a response to another responder that starts out, "I agree with so and so"....but then clearly disagrees with said person? Does it make you wonder about the posters ability to read and/or comprehend what they read?

As much as possible, I try to read the discussion first as I don't want my responses to be unrelated with the discussion because I don't want other members rating me negatively. I also would try to be one of the first respondents so that I won't have to read the responses before I respond. Have a nice day!

LOL! I don't always read all the responses before I respond to the original post myself. What I was saying about reading responses is that some people start out their own response by saying something like; "I agree with responder A.....", but what they say after that is complete contradiction to "responder A", showing that they clearly disagree, or vice versa. If you are going to start your statement by claiming that you agree with someone else that has already responded, then you should have at least read that person's response carefully enough so that you do not contradict yourself. You have a nice day too!

I have yet to read responses like that. Maybe they are just skimming or as you have said, they don't really understand the response they are relating to.

I have seen a lot of that. But maybe with so many responding they are disagreeing with each other? I do agree that some people have answered without apparently completely understanding cause the answers don't seem to respond to the original question.

Yes, often if a lot of people have responded to a thread some of the people will disagree with each other, but I wasn't commenting on people disagreeing with each other in general. Mmmmm....how can I explain this?...For example; a person starts a thread and asks: Would you rather get shoved into a puddle of slime or have hot coffee spilled on you? Responder1 says: I would rather be pushed into a puddle of slime any day, hot coffee would burn! Responder2 says: hot coffee, slime is gross. Responder3 says: I agree with responder1, of course I would rather have hot coffee spilled on me, who wants slime all over them? Of course that is not an actual discussion that took place here on mylot or anywhere else that I am aware of, but just something I made up to demonstrate my point. Notice how responder3 stated that they agreed with responder1 but then made the exact opposite choice then responder1 did? Well, that is the sort of thing I have sometimes seen here on mylot. lol

Honestly, I wonder more about the spelling! I'm not trying to be the Grammar Police or anything and I realize English is not a lot of peoples' first language, but... wow! Like you said about the content of the responses, it sometimes gets so difficult to wade through that I just give up. As to your question specifically, I have not noticed this a lot, though I have been on and off sporadically over the years, so I could not rightly say. Mostly, I notice a lot of short and/or poorly-written responses, which makes me wonder about reading comprehension.

I notice that sometimes people respond to the title only. I figure someone like that reacted to the title but didn't take the time to read the op. I rarely take the time to read all the responses in someone else's threads though, so I can't say much about the second question.

I don't always read all of the responses to a discussion either but if I started my own response by stating that I agreed or disagreed with another person who had already responded I'd like to think that I had read that person's response clearly enough so as not to contradict myself. lol

Sometimes I do but if its long I just usally read about a sentence or two or I would just skim through out the whole post. But I usally know what the post is about just from the headline which most of the time its pretty explainable.

Ah! But that is exactly one of the problems. A lot of times you can NOT tell what the discussion is about just from the title. Many times the title is just a gimmick to get people's attention. If you actually read the entire post, then you often find that what is actually being said is not what the title may first lead you to believe. Responding to the title alone, without reading the entire post will often lead to giving responses that are not related to the discussion or that do not answer the main question or both. As you have just demonstrated as you did not answer any of the main questions posed at the end of my post.

Definately, I completely agree with you. And I chose to paint my bedroom blue because it is a very nice tranquil color. I am just kidding. Yes I have definately noticed that. I have had a few of those such responses. I just kind of shake my head and think, OK, they just did not get what I was asking, I kind of giggle and move on. I do sometimes have a tendency to babble, and I go above and beyond what the person actually asked.
