Giving Our Cat Meds

We have a little, gray, domestic cat who is so dear to me. The other day I noticed one of her eyes was so swollen and draining. It was so bad the eye was half closed and even her chin was damp. I called the vet's office and took her right in. Both eyes were infected but one worse than the other. She's on eyedrops and an antibiotic. The last two days we have been struggling to give her the meds. Hasn't been easy so this morning I decided to put her in the kitchen sink so she couldn't get her back claws all over my arms and scratch me. It worked! She was slipping in the sink so my arms were safe. I held her upper body as her feet dangled in the sink and my husband gave her the meds. It was rather funny. Has anyone tried to give a cat meds like this to protect their body? By the way, the cat made a tremendous improvement in less than 24 hours after being on the meds.

Oh, sorry to hear about this. :-((( I'm glad you found a creative way to give the meds to the cat and glad to hear he's getting better!!! When I had a cat, he also got sick once and the helper in our house just grabbed his jaws, opened it, and gave the oral medication. I wouldn't know how to do it otherwise since he would definitely fight back he he he...

lol Carol, next time wrap the cat/kitten in an old blanket or towel. Works every time for me.

I have never owned a cat so I haven't had the experience...I take that back...when I was little and lived on the farm we all got our own but didn't have to do anything like you did....my sister however has always had cats until recently...and I have seen her struggle trying to take care of it.....whether it be giving meds or other things!

In the past when I have had to give cats meds. I have wrapped them in towel sheets blankets, and even hide the evil meds in cat food or treats or human food. LOL!!! I have never tried the sink as a way of not getting scratched though interesting.

I mash pills up into food with a pill squasher. I have put the cat on the floor and knelt over her, the cat between my knees. When she is sitting, I use one hand to tip back her head and the other to open her mouth and stuff in the pill. I then keep her mouth closed and blow on her nose until she swallows. If you have 2 people, you can have the cat sit while you hold her shoulders. The other person can deal with the mouth and the pill.
Pilling cats is not easy, but it can be done. I hope your kitty feels better soon.

I have a bad back and it's real hard for me to bend down or get on the floor to do anything. I hold the cat under her chest and my husband squirts the meds into her mouth. Her back paws have claws and she squirms to get away and keeps scratching me so the sink works well. Thanks for responding with the good advice.

but some of mine are so bad we have to wrap them up in a towel and just leave the part we want to work on out
