How often do you go for regular health check up?

I had gone for a routine health check up last week. That covered some blood test including cholesterol, blood glucose, uric acid, liver and kidney functions... I was apprehensive about the result though. Today I got the reports and it is unexpectedly good! I was almost sure that my cholesterol would be high but it isn't! Thanks to my mom who has finally been convinced and made to look into the health aspect of food. Do you guys go for routine check up or it needs some kind of health hazard to force you there?

It really good to know that you got yourself to go for a checkup and that your reports were normal. It sure is important to get oneself checked up at regular intervals. The need for this keeps increasing as we grow older especially considering our stressfull lives and the kind of food that we eat these days. At the same time i must admit that i have been guilty of procrastinating and delaying a regular health check up. It's not been the fear of knowing that has kept me away, only some past experiences. But i have to get that out of my head and get one scheduled very shortly. Thanks for bringing up this discussion Mimpi, it has most certainly made me determined to ahead and get one done.

Prevention is most certainly better than cure. No doubts on this at all. The dentist's appointment. Yes ,that is actually on the proiority list. And due to some reasons i need to schedule both this appointment and the check up together. Thanks again for the reminder Mimpi.

I feel, no knows better than we do about our body. So we are best judge when comes to our needs and priorities. You just decide on that and go ahead. Healthy leaving is so much essential and as I was telling the other day we much get Health Leaves instead of Sick Leaves. That makes more sense given the situation we are into. Be healthy (not fat) and think healthy.

I know what you mean. Being a procrastinator myself, I know what takes over our urge. It's laziness surely lol.. I myself went for this after a long long time. Did not have any reason to go for it but its always good to be careful. Prevention is most definitely better than cure. I know you won't deny. Next is my appointment with the Dentist, that's kind of pending. This again abnormal routine check up. I must wrap it off in one week's time. Are you awaiting a dental consultation well?

This is the discussion that I was thinking of making when I went to bed a couple of days back and forgotten completely.I am shocked to see it here with the own words that I have coined. Well I get myself checked medically once in a year.

It is only an emergency that will take me to the doctor. In fact I have to literally be dragged there. I have not done a complete check up for many years now. I know I should be going but am just too lazy....

Most are like you Mayka. But don't you feel its important to take care of ourselves - that in fact should be the number 1 priority in life. We must take care of our selves, no matter what.

What motivation you need, tell me? The fact that your children look up to you, is that not enough? The fact that we friends love you so much, is that not enough? Or need some more reasons?

Ya, i planned the checkup every Dec of the year. I do also get my family member to go together for checkup. I have difficulties to get my parent initially as they will always mentioned that they know their health level, i really don't agree and doubt how can know that without checking on the blood test, only by feeling? But finally they still go for that and the result it shows normal. This at least give me some good feel that their still healthy. Strongly encourage to have regular checkup. Enjoy life and be healthy. =)

Hi mimpi1911, you are correct prevention is better than cure. As most of parent didn't really practicing on that, thus as children, we might help them to plan out too.

I don't go as often as I should. I tend to wait until I'm sick before I actually go to the doctor. In my case this is stupid because I have conditions which must be monitored. In fact, I am overdue for blood work right now. Yes, I'll be getting that dealt with tomorrow.

Until I was diagnosed with diabetes about 2.5 years ago I did not go for regular checks at all. I had been to the doctors with the symptoms of diabetes and they had almost thrown me out of the office saying it must just be hormonal and made me feel like I was wasting their precious time which at the time really pissed me off. Then I was called in for routine checks for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, heart problems, etc and that's when it came out that I had diabetes. I was furious with them when this came out as I had specifically been in to see them some time previously about those exact symptoms and they were quite apologetic. I have very little faith in my doctor’s surgery now. But I do have to go in every 6 months for regular check up because of my diabetics – I find this a real chore as they are not practical and don’t do early morning appointments – one can only see the diabetic nurse between 10 and 12 and this means I have to take almost the whole morning off work. Not that it’s an issue as my boss is very understanding but imagine I worked somewhere else? I would have to lose half a day’s holiday every time... I think my surgery seems to exist mostly to cater for unemployed people who have nothing to do all day and can go to the doctor’s when it suits them. Do I sound bitter? Well I’m sure I do and I have good reason to be. I have paid ridiculous sums of income tax and national insurance contributions since my late teens only to have to deal with a shoddy national health service which has no time and consideration for people who work full time! Even my local hospital where I’ve been for blood tests several times have messed up my results several times in the last 3 or 4 years! What can I do except complain to you guys here? LOL! As it is, I avoid going to the doctor as much as possible if I have aches and pains or colds which is not a good idea as my last cold turned into a chest infection which had to be treated with antibiotics because I tried to ignore it!

I am sorry to hear this anonmili. Its the same everywhere. Being a part of the health care industry myself I cannot but agree with the level of corruption it has. The people here fear the extortion of the system more than the surgeries and disease! While some doctors are good and honest others are corrupted and the good ones have to succumb to the system. It feels sad! You take care.

Thank you so much for the BR on this one hun, much appreciated. I have to say though, for all my gripes about my own doctor's surgery, the hospital staff I have encountered when my dad was going through cancer treatment could not have been more helpful and wonderful to my dad. They really work long hours here at the hospitals and I have the utmost respect for their gentle and caring natures. I don't have much good to say about my surgery as I said it seems to exist and operate hours to cater for unemployed people (which I resent) and pensioners (which I don't resent) but the treatment at the hospitals I have experienced with my immediate family members as well as friends and their parents is always something we can turn around and say we are glad of the National Health Service professionals that work there.

Its indeed heartening to hear this mili. As you must be knowing, in most cases, here in India corruption is so predominant that its difficult to be patient and follow the rule. For at the end of it all you are only one who is modestly abiding by the rule and thus an exception. That's also ridiculed!

I don't actually have regular check ups scheduled. but it is nice to have a medical check up once a year courtesy of our company. We had it last month covering blood test, x-ray, ecg and urine analysis. The results were fine. All within normal range. Have a nice day!

for me it does take some absolute kind of hazard to my health and even then I try my best to just handle it myself and if I cant then I would go to the emergency room or something. I do my best to not go to a doctor at all. I have not as far as I know ever just had a regular check up. Of course I have not been to a doctor in well over a year if not longer.

Unfortunately I am required to go in and see my doctor every three months for a check up. I also have to have blood work every three months. I'm diabetic, among other things and they must monitor it frequently. However I think its been a while since my cholesterol was checked. I'm not sure I want to know what it is. LOL It often runs way too high.

the last checkup was before 2yearsth i think that if we go for checkup easily and unnecessarily Dr is going to charge Rs1000. so no Dr until i have some problem that can't be cured by self medicine.

I don't go health checkup unless i myself feel weird about my body. Especially i particularly observe my urine colour and where does it has bubbles. Cause it will be a sign of a health problem. You won't want to check up if you are raring to go.
