Many years ago we use to let our hair grow and curl our wet hair with cardboard toilet paper rolls. The curls were huge but the cardboard only lasted through one holding. Even when it dried out the cardboard was a little distorted. How many participated this hot and sexy look?

It was a common practice in the 1960's while in high school. Many of the girls couldn't afford rollers or they loved the huge curls. Don't think the guys noticed as much as the other girls. Thanks for responding.

I have never heard of this, I have had rags put in my hair to make it curly before. My Grandma did this for me one time, but I have never heard of using cardboard toilet paper rolls.

I did not participate in this fashion phase!....nope I went right from pin curls to the big pink rollers that had clips on them. We also used the pink sponge rollers which are still available at the dollar store! LOL.....I have used the toilet paper rolls for various things but never thought to roll my hair with them.

Everyone that used them came to school with huge curls. What ideas have you used the toilet paper rolls? Thanks for responding.

At Christmas I filled them with candy....wrapped them in Christmas wrap and tied the ends with pretty ribbon and used them on each person's plate as a little favor.

We used frozen juice cans. Still don't last past one time and when I say we, it was really my cousins. I watched them do it. That's a different way of recycling. Have to keep a lot of toilet paper rolls. They way my 11 cousins drank juice, could get juice cans a lot in a short period of time. But with that many people, probably could do accumulate a lot of toilet tissue rolls, too.So were you hot and sexy looking?

Me, hot and sexy looking....rofl Naw I was a skinny kid who had braces and glasses. Nothing I did with my hair would help my face! Thanks for responding.

I wasn't beautiful as a teen either. Think serious overweight geek type.

We never used toilet paper rolls. We used small cans, like the kind that frozen juice concentrate came in. Back then, our mothers all made juice from concentrate and we used the smaller cans as hair curlers. You could buy large plastic hair rollers at the store, but that wasn't as much fun. I actually slept on these things!

Oh yeah! I totally forgot about the juice cans. They were funny too. I never did use them or attempt to sleep on them either. How funny. Thanks for responding.

That is most interesting. I have never heard of that. How long did these have to stay in the hair in order to get those curls?

Most of the time we slept on them. It wasn't easy to sleep but anything was worth looking beautiful in junior high where the boys would be to notice us the next day...lol Thanks for responding.

I've never heard of this before. I would think that the curls would turn out quite large too. My Mom used to have an old wood burning stove (she still has it but doesn't use it) and she used to take toilet paper rolls, stuff them with lint from the dryer and use it to light fires in the wood stove. Now that's another good way to use this cardboard. Makes more sense then putting the things in the hair! Thanks for responding.

I have never heard of using toilet paper rolls to roll the hair but have heard of using empty, cleaned juice cans opened at both ends. There was an older girl who lived across the street from me who used the cans.

That's funny. Thanks for sharing. I never tried that; but when I was a teen I tried some weird looks. I must go looking for a great funny picture to share later now.

Looking back, it was very funny. We had lumps in our hair from the big rolls. Some kids used juice cans. Empty, of course otherwise their heads would have weighed 25 pounds. Thanks for responding.

Hi carolbee, That is goung back a while, my sister used to use pipe cleaners and I wanted those new Carmens heated rollers, they were just coming out into fashion and my mum always used to say "girl money don't grow on trees" we'll just have to make do with what we can use. Years later I got my Carmen rollers and I still have them, they are in the attic. Love & Hugs. Tamara

I never had long hair when i was young. My hair is very curly and my mom always had it cut very short! But my sister use to set her hair in rollers that were the size of Cans!
