My husband passed his probation at his new job, and will be getting a raise. It actually will be retroactive to September 4. He will also get shift differential, and it will also be retroactive. Do you get shift differential? Has an employer ever given you retroactive pay?

Congrats! I get a differential for working weekends, evenings and holidays too. I have in the past received retro pay. That was a nice bonus.

I too will be getting a free flu shot. I still don't like needles though!

Maybe you could get the one that is based in a nasal spray. They are finding that it is just as effective as the actual shot.

None of my current work pays differential, but the one with the adult disabled gives nice bonuses from time to time, and does some health screening. I will get a free flu shot, too. My new part-time job will be similar to yours. Bob took a second job with the same home companion company, he cannot stay out of the caring business.

When I worked overnight at different places, they usually gave me shift differential. Even afternoon shift a couple places I received a little more money per hour. Retroactive pay is good, but it's a pain. I received retro for many months in one paycheck at the very end of the year. I was working for NY State and they wanted it all back, so they did a lump sum payment and did get most of it back, the jerks. Retro to April, but we got it in our last checks in December. Since they didn't warn us, we didn't get the chance to change our deferred comp and with-holding, so we got creamed.

That sounds pretty sneaky and underhanded to me. I used to get that kind of junk from the school district. What kind of work are you looking for?

NY State sneaky and underhanded, ha,ha, ha-you betcha! I could tell you stories. Work=$1,000 more a month to pay my bills. I already work weekends so something during the week. That's only $400 to $500 a month from that (take home pay). I've had all kinds of work, Correction Officer, Teacher, Tutor, Warehouse, Answering Phones, sales, I try it all.Whatever comes up in my area. The problem is that almost all the jobs are weekends and unless they pay more than $11 an hour, I can't really give up my weekend job.

Actually, we have a small trip planned, but we were going to take it anyway, this just makes it easier. We will drive about six hours over to another state, and go to a festival and agriforestry demonstration It is called a Chestnut roast and there are lots of vendors selling interesting hand crafted things. There is an apple orchard there as well, and a cider mill and a museum.

So we are glad for every bit of anything we can get. In spite of the recession, right now we are doing okay. Not excellent, but okay.

That is great for you. I am sure that extra money will come in handy. I have never gotten a differential or retroactive pay. Sure could use it though.

Often positions that have 24 hour shifts rotation will give differential for second or third shift. Not all do though. He really likes second shift, and it is nice that when they schedule him for that, he gets extra pay.

That is absolutely wonderful news. Good for him!!! Haven't had retroactive pay from an employer before. It would be really nice. My husband RETIRED today, so more wonderful news on the employment front. WOOHOO!!!! He'll be getting his first SSI payment this month, and coming to Canada to stay.

Will it be SSI, or regular Social Security. My hubby chose to start drawing at 62 (plus a few months) and that is what has given us the stability to have me not work a full time job. Just some assorted part time stuff.

He started as a security guard a couple of months ago. We are retirement age, or at least he is, and he is drawing Social Security from being 62, and some of his more recent jobs have made him so stressed out that he was ill. This does not pay well, but it only had a thirty day probation, then the first raise. It just took them almost a month to do the evaluation.

Congratulations! That is just wonderful news. Yes I have gotten shift differential before and retroactive pay as well. The nice thing about a shift differential is that when he gets his next raise, the shift differential should go up in parallel with that. Yayyy! After a while, it begins to make a difference.

Since most of the people who do this job are retired or disabled, they do not have a lot of pressure to give raises, but he should get some. We are grateful to be living much less stressful jobs now than earlier this year.

I wish mine could get something like that. Though he did get a 3 year bonus from his last company. We really needed that money.

Great news! When in the military you are always promoted from the first of the month but sometimes don't actually get the actual promotion until a few days later, so I guess that would be retroactive. I've never had it happen in the private sector, though.

That is wonderful! I'm so happy for you. Especially in the shaky economy that has to be even more welcome. I really like that the employer gave him retroactive pay. I don't know that a lot of places would do that. I think it builds company loyalty, so places really should think about stuff like that. Congratulations, GardenGerty!

It is different in different companies. Other jobs we have worked have sometimes given shift differential and sometimes not. My brother and his wife get longevity pay every June or July. It is a nice bonus. My one part time job sometimes gives bonuses, other times not. Early this summer they gave a $20 card to a convenience store/gas station to every one. This month they gave a new shirt and a fifty dollar Wal Mart card to all direct care staff.

Great news! Yes, I have had retroactive pay before. Once I was promoted and given a great raise and I was doing the job for probably 3 weeks before the paperwork was fully approved. The next paycheck was a nice one. :-)
