My son started school mid-August since then he has had 2 scheduled days off (not counting the week they missed due to Gustav), next Friday he is off AGAIN!
I don't understand how they can get all the education they need with all these days off.
Apparently, even though they missed a week due to Gustav, they don't even have to make it up anywhere. They get all of their vacation. Does that make sense?

Schools up here get 5 calamity days which means that they get 5 days for either weather or if the building itself had a problem, (like a water main break or no heat)..Any days after that they make up at the end of the school year..I don't know if that is nationwide, but if it is and your kids had the 5 days off from Gustav, then that might be their 5 free days.

I guess that is what happened. The school district didn't really explain the situation.

If you called the school, I am sure they can explain it..I think mostly the Northern states use this because we get all that snow..In the south, you get hurricanes and floods, but maybe not every years..My sons school uses most if not all 5 days every year..But if we get a bad snowfall this year, they will have to make that up at the end of the year because they already used their 5 days this year from having no power for week from the remnants of hurricane Ike..

I think kids need to be in school more often also. I do not understand how they can fully learn and remember things either with so many days off. My daughters school closes alot in the winter time because of snow and ice.

I don't understand how kids learn anything. One thing i am grateful for is that the Christmas break is a lot shorter here. Instead of almost a month, they only get 2 weeks.
