A Real Taste Treat...

I dropped in today on a friend who had made some apple crisp earlier in the day. She offered me some, and then asked if it tasted funny or were her taste buds off. I took a spoonful and said that it tasted faintly of onions, but it just might be because of the pan she used (the broiler pan)...
I continued to eat it, even though it started getting salty. I asked her if she had put any salt in it. She admitted to only a pinch. So I asked if she put any sugar in. She said, "A cup."
"White or brown?"
"Brown... unless... unless I used the onion soup mix..."
She buys both at a bulk foods store, and recently another one of her friends helped her clean and re-organize her kitchen, and you wouldn't believe how much onion soup powder looks like brown sugar...
She was laughing about it all day, especially as I kept eating the apple crisp while questioning her cooking method.
So, have any of you made "interesting" substitutions?

Hey barbara, That was too funny! I was laughing too! So
you ate apple crip made with onion soup powder. I'll bet
that was something new and different! I'm sure you'll
never taste anything she bakes again! That is really
funny. I have heard people using salt instead of sugar
and things like that so mistakes do happen from time
to time! I have reached for one spice and almost put
in the wrong one. I think I was making french toast
and really wasn't paying complete attention to what I
was doing and I reached for the cinnamon powder I thought
and stopped just in time because I had paprika in my
hand and ready to pour into the french toast egg wash.
That would have been really yummy. So as I said accidents
will happen in the kitchen!

Actually, French toast paprikash might not be as bad as it sounds... but I don't think you'd want to put syrup on it... maybe ketchup or mayonaise, though... relish, anyone?
