Are You a Square?

Crochet Squares - This is my first attempt at making squares and joining them. I still prefer those that are done in one piece.

This is my first attempt at doing squares and joining them. I just can't seem to get them to come out exactly square on the corners. I did get one strip done and part of another (ran out of the other color), so I haven't attached the strips together yet. I know it will be a problem since they are not completely squared off and there is a small gap between them when they are laid together. I'm not sure how I'm going to tackle that project yet. I don't mind doing the squares as they do work up quickly, but I still think I'm not cut out for this type of thing because of the finishing and joining. I'd much rather do the 'back and forth' like I've been doing and not have to worry about them being perfectly square. I do like the colors I chose for this, though. The camera didn't do them justice.

You should have a shell on each corner (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) You're not joining that chain 1. It might pull a little, but when you get 4 corners together it will square up. I love those colors, so nice and fall like!

Well I'm all goofs this morning. That corner should have 3 chains and be joined at the middle chain.

I think you are crocheting and they will come together when you crochet the squares together. It has been a while since I did any squares but they do work together. You can do it and I want to see a picture when you have them done. You can do it! God bless you!

I like it. I haven't attempted this type of afghan yet but have been wanting too just not brave enough yet to embark on it. I am working in shell pattern right now.

I have an unfinished bunch of squares because of something else you will want to be aware of. I learned, to my dismay, that variegated yarn is not quite as heavy as solid, or something, because my variegated squares always work up smaller and lighter weight. I need to put the ones I have together, though, and give it away, as it was meant for someone more than ten years ago. Or join the ones that are similar sized, or something. I am not doing much of anything at this point.

I have never noticed any difference in my varigated yarns and my regular ones. However I have noticed a difference in yarns I have purchased at discount stores vs other stores. I stick to name brands for the most part now unless I am getting used yarns from garage sales and such.

Very lovely, indeed! Is that single crochet? I can't tell from the picture, but the yard looks raised as in a fancy stitch. If it's not a fancy stitch then you did an excellent job of making it look fancy! I love doing the granny square design and have even made children's sweaters from that one pattern. Can you imagine? Best of luck with your quilt.

No, it's not quite a puff stitch, its a single and double crochet in one stitch, then skip one, then another single and double, etc.

I guess I am not a square but a rectangle! Too lazy to do a bunch of squares , they just don't appeal to me doing them right now! I had rather do a simple pattern that you dont have to do alot of joining or counting. Am I getting lazy, old or what?! (A combo I guess!)

Once you are joining your squares, you will have to do some extra stitches at the corners to make them more squared off. It will be a stitch-by-stitch thing with each corner as you look at it and make it fit. Adding stitches, skipping stitches...whichever works for each corner. What method are you using to join them? I use the slip stitch. I don't think any of the corners will look exactly squared off until they are joined. Take your time. You will get it. I think a lot of this kind of thing ends up being trial and error until you find something that works for you.

You got to love that kid of mine. He also say's it's warm. You can't beat warm even if it isn't square. I give some of mine to the shelters for the people that need blankets. It makes me happy and they don't mind it that there not square. They like them. Your friend onlydia

Your colors are very pretty. The corners never will come put exactly square. You can manipulate the stitches when you join them together so there is no gap. They will turn out perfectly fine.
