My husband decided to go into the marine corps and we have all sorts of logistics to work out. His recruiter is on vacation this week, so we have been dealing with the guy in charge of all the recruiters in the area. When we were in there yesterday he was quoting all kinds of numbers because we were talking about why the recruits have to open a bank account when they get to boot camp. Some of the stuff disturbed me: - most of the guys who enter don't have a bank account (no big surprise there) - they don't know what a check register or a check is,or how to balance a check book - even if they work, they have no clue how to fill out a W4 - a percentage (I think it was 30%) of all recruits join to avoid going to jail - most of the people he recruits, even though they finished high school, barely are at what he would consider an eight grade level To me that kind of stuff really bothers me. I don't know how much truth there is to it all, but based on the 17-20 year olds I interact with on a regular basis (and especially the ones we have met while sitting in that office) I wouldn't be surprised. Not only our some kids being that under educated, but they are being put in the military and allowed to carry major firearms. The people who score the lowest have to take the infantry and artillery jobs (not EVERYONE there is a low tester, some choose to be there). My point: how can they enlist people who don't have basic life skill sand expect them to be able not to crumble under the extreme stress of boot camp and - if they get passed that - possible a war time situation. I am in contact with a lady and her son just completed boot 2 months ago. At boot camp there were 4 suicides and 10 attempts. In his second line of training (which he has been at for about a month), there have been 2 suicides and 8 attempts. Does this bother anyone?

Wow. That is awful. I hate to hear that. Life gets the best of all of us at times. I feel so sorry for them.
