I never even tried to learn sign language and just the other day me and my wife downloaded some stuff to show us sign language. It's pretty dang hard to learn that's for sure but it is kinda fun. There's all sorts of stuff to learn, i'm not too good at it but oh well. Anyone else ever tried it?

I had to learn sign language when my ODD was abt 3yrs old. She had a speech delay and sign language was one of the first building blocks of communication for us with her. We only learned maybe 10-20 basic signs just to communicate with her. We had to teach family who normally interact with her the signs so they understood what she wanted. I"m happy to say that she speaks like any other child her age does thru lots of speech therapy and hard work :)

At one point, I was actually fluent in American Sign Language. The high school I went to my freshman year offered it as a foreign language. I still know quite a bit, but I've forgotten a lot and lost a lot of speed. In a regular conversation with someone who's deaf, I get behind, lost, etc. It's still nice to be able to use it occasionally to help people out. Now that I have a child, who happens to have Autism, I've been working on refreshing myself. Sign language is often used to help promote communication with children with Autism. My son is 6 and is really starting to grasp the alphabet as well as some other signs. I suggest buying or renting some videos/dvds that show basic signs. The diagrams are a little difficult to understand sometimes, unless you have a basic idea of how the movements of are done. Seeing it in action will help you to get the gist of the signs from the diagrams better.

I don't recall ever trying to do official sign language. I've sang various camp songs that came with hand actions, but I'm not sure if they were proper sign language or not. At the end of September, I attended an assembly at my son's school, and a grade 3 class shared a poem that they did sign language to while reciting it. It was interesting to watch, and fantastic to see. :) The entire class was taught some sign language from one of the classmates, as his parents are both completely deaf, and he's been signing his entire life.

My son was taught to sign a song when he was in the forth grade. It was difficult to help him with one song, never mind learning it in it's entirety. The song was beautiful, especially coming from a bunch of small children!
