Veggietales...good influence or bad??

My children watch VeggieTales all the time. Recent I went into christian book store and picked one up. A lady in her 30's approached me and gave me a ration of attitude about my purchase. I was told that VeggieTales are a bad influence and distort a bible lesson. I was stunned. Although everyone holds their own biblical perspective. I would rather have my children watching stories with good moral and ethical lessons, than Power Rangers and fighting aggressive cartoons. I find that my children are calmer and relaxed this was. Directly after watching Power Rangers they kick box and fight. I have had so many cut lips and bruises. And...they are only 5, 3, and 2. The two year old doesn't really comprehend it yet, but the other two do. They know the lessons that are being taught too. Like lying is wrong, and befriending your neighbor. Things like that. With my teenagers I never let them watch aggressive shows so I never had this dilema. What do you think? Are VeggieTales bad? Do you find that your children act out the shows they are watching? Good or Bad??

I am not very religious what so ever. But I like you like the moral & ethical lessons taught in the show. There aren't enough moral or ethics in kids shows. You mentioned Power Rangers, thats one show My kids will not watch. I usually try to stick to PBS Kids mainly & Qubo isn't too bad. Though I can see from the person who gave ya that stern look bout it distorting the lessons in the Bible. But to each their own. KWIM? Everyone has their own perspective on the meaning of the stories in the Bible. A show like Veggie Tales does what you mentioned moral and ethical stories and it's not done "word for word" to the Bible as it would loose it's "kid appeal" and become boring. But you should of told that lady that a lil bit of God's values in a appealing manner to small kids are better than none at all.

OK, Ya totally got me on the KWIM? That was too funny. I had to get on goggle and chech it out. Yes, I do know you mean. We have to teach morals and ethics at home when they are young- or we leave it up to teachers that are too over worked and under paid. (Ever wondered why some of the school aged children are monsters) I think that is right: a little is better than none. I really want young, respectable children, not fighting hoolagans. Thank you 3snugglebunnies. I appreciate you comment.

Sorry on the abbreviation;) We can't expect the teachers to teach our kids everything. And what we are afraid of like s e x ed parents are up in arms that they want to be the ones to do the "talk" but are there enough parents actually doing the "talk" I agree they need to learn some values before they get to school. Just basic manners will do them a world of good. You have no idea how impressed people are that my lo's (little ones) say please and TY w/o prompting. The world needs a lil more manners & common courtesy and it should come w/o asking!

I completely agree with you 3SnuggleBunnies, though the telling of the Bible stories may be minorly distorted it isn't significant enough to change the meaning of the stories, and again they are just trying to make them fun to catch childrens attention. It's appalling that anyone would question a mother trying to provide quality programming for their children. If a mother isn't doing right by their children by giving them Bible stories to watch, then for crying out loud what CAN children watch?

hehe, my response would have been, "Gee, I don't remember asking you for your opinion," and walked away. You are a smart mom!! I can't believe the garbage that parents allow their kids to watch and play!! I love Veggie Tales. When I had my dance school, I had a tv and videos to keep kids busy who were waiting for their siblings or kids in between classes. Veggie Tales was one of the many similar tapes that I had. Kids learn what they see. If you show them violence or sassy kids talking back to their parents, then they think that it is okay to do that.

Oh, that is too funny about the three year old!! LOL Just rename tomatoes. Once, my son who was age 5, decided he did not like meatloaf. He liked ground meat in any other way, but not meatloaf. So, we made meatloaf but put it in cupcake tins and called them meat cakes. Then he ate the same exact things. So, now you can rename tomatoes and cut them up, or something. Call them "red peaches". LOL

That is such a great idea. Ok "red peaches" it is... Wait till my husband gets a hold of that one. I like the meat cake idea, think my husband will catch on to that on?

Nanajanet, I always look forward to reading what you write. I should have said something, but to be truthful...I was so shocked that I was being questioned about what was right fo rmy kids I was speechless. Now, My husband wishes he could have seen that because he thinks it takes a LOT to shut me up. When you get right down to it. It is better than85% of the programming out there. Thank you for your compliment. We are veggie addicts. Now the only problem we have had is this...When they realized that bob was a tomaote. (comprhended) My three year old wouldn't and won't eat tomatoes. I think he sees it as barbaric. We all sing the songs as a family. The Ultimate Countdown is hilarious. Thank you for sharing nanajanet.

My son has only watched a few VeggieTales movies. I don't hold their religious values but I do agree that they do teach good lessons. Of course, I never really had a problem with my son acting out shows like power rangers, We taught him early on the difference between real &fake and what was and wasn't appropriate for him to act out.

They know as well but, I think they get caught up in the story like we do in adult shows. VeggieTales are much calmer and they do better. I think all in all, I get a better result with VeggieTales. Thank you for your response sedal1027.

My kids watch Veggie Tales all of the time. In fact they watched several of them today. My son started getting them when he was about 2 and now my daughter watches them too. My kids are 8 and 1 1/2. I think Veggie Tales are good for kids.

They have the older ones. I have not gotten them any new ones lately. Dave and the Giant Pickle, Josh and the Big Wall and Rack, Shack, and Benny are the ones that have been getting played the most around here lately. My 20 month old even sings along with the theme song.

which ones do you kids like the most? My boys love Little Joe and Moe. They just laugh when they watch them and they sing all the songs. Isn't it cute to watch them sing and interact with these shows. Thankyou lilybug.

I love Veggie Tales! My son was 9 when the first one came out, but I bought it anyway, since I was working in children's ministry. He's 24 now, and we can still both sing...."God is bigger than the boogie man. He's bigger than Godzilla and the monsters on TV. Oh God is bigger than the boogie man. And He's watching out for you and me." At least that's the way we remember the words. When my son was little, he only watched PBS, some of the old 50s & 60s shows in black and white, and videos I purchased, usually from the Christian bookstore. He also didn't have his first bite of candy until he was 3 (and then from my mother). By the time Veggie Tales came out, his values had pretty much been set. But I shared those videos with more than one church, and they all loved the values and what Biblical teaching there was. I wonder if that lady in the store works with kids or has any clue about how watered down lessons for kids are in Sunday school and children's church....so that they can understand the concepts.

I may not be the best to comment on thgis but it is mty thinking that if we do the best to tach the kids good values from day one we have no worry on how our kids will turn out. But I must say saome shows now days the consept of them are not to my understanding because of some of the things I get out of what is said morally that is.

First of all, you as a parent must weigh the pros and cons of any content that you will expose your children to. If you feel that it is not right then by all means go with that. If you have any questions about what this product is teaching then do some research on what is being introduced. I have a 10 yr. old daughter and I let her watch Veggie Tales, as do I. They have some very good moral structure to them. There aren't enough ethically responsible children programing/products around nowadays. It a shame. Thanks. Blessings...

You are right. I have watched all of them. I think it is so much better then what is on mainstream T.V..Ther isn't a lot of moral and ethical programming out there we can grab a hold of for kids. I say all in all, I like VeggieTales. Thank you Uniquely_Designed.

I saw one of the Veggietales and it does help introduce moral values to children. As for distorting a bible lesson, I used to watch those movies about Biblical characters that were not exactly the truth= like Samson meeting Hercules, etc. but I also read the Bible. I considered that poetic license, so the Veggietales could be considered as comedic license. Oh my sons watched Transformers when they were young and they acted them out as well as Power Rangers. Not as violent as yours did though. But we did not have Veggietales when they were small. We had the Flintstones and BC.

I watched Flinstones too. Oh and the Smurfs. I guess you are right. Didn't the movie The Ten Commandments take a little poetic license as well. I din't think we could accurately portray a biblical scence without having beem there. Yeah, my boys are really rough and tumblers sometimes. Thanks for you opinion.

We have several Veggies Tales movies at our house. Our son will be 3 in February. He's getting to where he's starting to understand some of the lessons in them now. He watches them some, but not too often. He still prefers the Wiggles, since they have actual dances that he can follow. I don't allow him to watch too much violent stuff (unless you count sports?). We watch PBS kids, Playhouse Disney, and Nick Jr on TV. Any movies that we buy that aren't specifically one of his shows on DVD, we watch before we allow him to see it. Veggie Tales are another exception, and he can watch them right away. I'm not alarmed by anything that Veggie Tales teach, and I have watched every one of them that we own (around 10).

My little one does really like Word World. He asks me how to spell other words now, too. He isn't great at spelling most words yet, but he can get in most of the letters, just not always in the right order. He's doing well for his age, though!

We have alot of them too. They make me laugh everytime. As for PBS kids. You totally need to have your little one start watching Word World. My guys LOVE it. They walk around spelling words all day. Mine are 5, 3, and 2. It is the best. I tried to get them involved in Super Why. They have really great programming. Thank you so much. Check out Word World.

I don't have any kids of my own but I am not afraid to say that I lOVE VeggieTales, And "3,2,1, Penguins" also. I even took a liberal girl I was dating to see The Jonah Movie at the theater and She loved it. I taught Sunday School to 4 year olds for about 7 years and I showed these videos a lot. You are definitely right about it's positive influence on kids. And I would agree that they are not 100% Biblically accurate. (There are no talking tomatoes in the bible, after all.) But they get the message out and teach kids important lessons. If you haven't seen "3,2,1,Penguins", You HAVE to get them, but make sure you(ahem, I mean THEY)watch the first one so you get the back story. They really do have lots of jokes for adults. Some of them go right over the kids heads. But that is part of their appeal, I was just looking at the message boards on IMDB.com and saw a question "VeggieTales watchers, how old are you?" It was posted by a 13 y.O. And the answers were everywhere from 9-39 And everywhere in between, Even teenagers and college students. A little VT trivia, Do you know why Phil Vischer chose to make the charachters as Vegetables? Because he wanted to avoid drawing hands.=D He originally was going to go with candy bars but he figured (correctly) that it wouldn't go over well with Parents. (Produce provides much more material for puns anyway). He made the first video on his computer in his bedroom. And we're talking about a 1993 computer, too! My favorite characters are the French Peas, Jean-Claude and Phillipe, The song they sing and their hurling insults In Josh and the Big Wall is hilarious!! As for Power Rangers, I have never seen more than a few minutes of any of the shows but I could usually tell which kids in my SS class watched them. They were always acting it out.

Veggietales aren't bad, they are produced by Focus on the Family. Dobson has a moral outlook on children's programing and wouldn't put something out there with his name on it that steered children away from God. I'm not sure who that lady was but don't listen to her, its not her children that you're raising, keep up the great work mom.

Thank you gitfiddleplayer! I didn't realize it was put on by focus on the family. I really like his book about raising boys. He is a great author. Thanks again. I appreciate your post.

My children love VeggieTales. My two year old doesn't understand it, but he loves the singing because he loves to dance. My daughter on the other hand who is 7 understands it. We watched The Pirate Who Don't Do Anything just a couple weeks ago and it had a very good message. I would rather my children watch the VeggieTales movies than most other cartoons or children shows.

My five year old knows too. I think my three year old understands most of. I would rather them watch VeggieTales also. I think they are getting a better idea of how we are supposed to act. Basically they are reinforcing lessons I am already teaching them at home. Thank you singlemommy. You have a tough job.
