My father used to be a chain smoker. Despite that he was advised by his general practitioner to stop smoking he still smokes three cigarettes a day. He tried to stop smoking unsuccessfully several times. Do you think that old practices die hard?

It is said that smoking is the hardest habit to kick. It takes a lot of determination and willpower to overcome this bad habit. If the doctors adviced your father to stop it...certainly there must be good reason. And even if the doctor did not tell so, it is very obvious that smoking do not do our body any good so if I were your boday, I'd stop that habit totally before it totally ruin my body. It is too late to stop when you already acquire the dreaded cancer of the lungs or of the throat or enphysema or any desease associated with smoking.

They really do. People get into bad habits like that, and they just can't stop. They are stuck in their old ways, and in the case of smoking, very very addicted!! I could not imagine three packs a day. My husband smokes, and he doesn't even smoke one pack a day. Three packs would kill someone, I imagine.

It's not only smoking that's hard to break but may other things. For example, I'm a video game addict this addiction sometimes cost me a lot. So Now I'm trying to control it and have succeeded a bit. Yes, they sure die, but take a lot of determination on the person's part to stand up against the wishes to take up the road again. bourne

Hi ronaldinu, Yes they do and if you are a smoker, it is very hard to brea the habit as you are addicted, I smoke as well and I just cant stop if people keep going about giving up, If I wanted to do it then I will but it is very hard to give up completly. Tamara

Yes old haits do die hard...I have my own way of doing things but my son who is 26 also lives with me and he has his own way of doing things so sometimes we clash as his way of washing the clothes is different to mine though it is the machine that does it so I let him do it..if I clean the kitchen he will do it the next day as it is never up to his standards...which is silly as we both clean it in the same way but differently...there are lots of things I have done for ages but my son does his own way so we come to come a compromise....littleowl
