How much taco mix do you use when making tacos?

Most times, when I make tacos, I don't use
the entire packet of taco seasoning from the box.
It's really high salt.
At first it tastes good, but then when
I add the other ingredients like
refried beans, the taste becomes very bland.
How do you spice up your tacos without
using a lot of taco mix?
Do you use the entire packet of taco mix?

Do you add refried beans to your meat while cooking it? Well as for us, I think we use the whole packet. I guess it's a matter of opinion + brand. Most of the time we us Old El Paso Brand, ya know the box kit? Sometimes it's the food lion brand. Are you sure your using enough water? It might be that their's not enough water. Sometimes boxes directions aren't the best...
Whenever I made taco's it was always the packet and that's it...

I add the mix to the cooked meat
and then a tablespoon of refried beans
after that.
The beans dilute down the taste.

That's a interesting way of making it! Hmm, I'm sure that it must taste good - besides it being a bit bland I think you said? I've never seen anyone make it like that...

I do use the entire taco seasoning mix. I like the taste of it and haven't really even thought about the salt content. I don't like refried beans, so when I make tacos, I always make spanish rice too. My son puts the rice right in the taco shell with the taco meat, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes.

Oh, my goodness! My daughter loves her tacos
with the Spanish rice too.
Well it's just plain rice with taco mix,
but it tastes like the real stuff.
I mix it right into the tacos, along with
everything else, including shredded carrots,
onions and corn.
It's a good way to give her extra nutrition
in a fun dish.

I do not use taco mix, it has both sugar and salt. I use my own spices. Garlic, cumin, red pepper, tumeric, whatever suits me. Some tomato sauce or salsa as well.

I might try making my own.
It doesn't sound like a complicated recipe.

it depends on how much meat I use. If I am cooking for five or more people then yes I will use the whole pack. If i'm makeing refried beans with it I will use half a pack for the hamburger and the other half for the refried beans. Thats about all I use to make my tacos.

I use the entire packet. I use one pack per pound of hamburger for tacos and chili. I love the flavor and I have so many compliments on my chili, I usually end up having to give out most of my batch of chili cause when they find out I've made it they start holding out their hands. I even had to give some to a family member I haven't seen for a year this last time. So I don't know about the sodium, I don't pay much attention to the packets but I definitly don't skimp on the flavorings!!!

I use a full package of the reduced sodium taco seasoning when I make tacos. Unless I'm making dinner for a lot of people, then I use 1 package for every pound of meat being cooked.
Refried beans will mellow out the spice a bit so in your case you'll want to use some taco sauce or just plain hot sauce to add a little kick.

I haven't seen the low sodium variety.
I'll check our local supermarket.
Maybe it's in another section of the store.
Thanks for the heads up!

I usually double the amount of meat and use one packet of seasoning. I agree with you that it is high in salt and not all that healthy for you. The other reason I use less seasoning is that I am always feeding small children and they prefer their food to be less spicy. I figure a person can always add more seasoning if it is not spicy enough for them.

Usually only about half the packet...I can't eat alot of spicy food so I don't use it all. I prefer my food without all the salt and Hubby adds whatever he wants to his...hot peppers, salsa or whatever...so it works out for both of us.

I do not use a mix. I make my own. I try to keep a big zippered bag of it in the cabinet so I can grab it and dump it in when I need it.
HOMEMADE TACO SEASONING MIX
1 tbsp. chili powder
2 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. each ground cumin, garlic powder, paprika, powdered oregano and sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Makes 3 tablespoons of seasoning mix, which is equal in strength to a 1/4 ounce package of commercial seasoning mix.
