alot of people in my family are bi polar, plus alot of other things. as i get older i relize that i might be in the same boat as them. it seems to be getting worse. i went t the doctor and well they put me on lexapro it seems to help some but not like it did before when i was on it. my mood swings have settle down and i dont always want to just hide away etc. i am not ready to fight with everyone al the time lol. i still have a hard time handling certain things though and have to keep myself in check alot. i was wondering if anyone here is on meds for these types of conditions and what they were taking. i have to go back to the doctor in 2 weeks and he will probably change the meds cause i am still having issues and well i dont want to be doped up i just want to deal with life better lol.

I don't take anything specifically for depression. I take Zoloft, but it is for my anxiety attacks. I think I will get it changed soon though, because I have been an emotional basketcase since getting on it. I hope you find what you need.

I take medication for depression (Zoloft) as does my son (Prozac) and they work well..Mind you I also take other meds that IMO help like Clonazepam and Trazodone. My son only takes his Prozac though and it works fine for him..I've never been on nor do I know anyone who's taken lexapro though but if its not working as well then maybe the dosage needs to go up or something else will work better..Hopefully your doc will work with you on it...

I used to, but I was determined not to take anything for it this year, My problem is seasonal affective disorder, so I am depressed when the weather gets really lousy. I spend as much time out of the house during the winter as I can. I live in a dark downstairs basement apartment, so staying out of there when I feel depressed is a good idea.

well i think depression is different with your condition which is bi-polar. are you sure your taking a medication because of you depression and not with the condition... i think the doctor gives you a medication with the condition and not because of your depression. if we will trace back every thing to answer why you have depression it boils down to one thing because of you bipolar condition. and if the doctor or your psychiatris knows what he is doing. i think you need to take a medication because of your condition. had mood swing too. i can't work a real job because of it. but i never take any medications. well i think

My father is bi-polar. They put him on lithium bicarbinate. 2 pills in the morning 2 pills at night. It seemed to help him a LOT. I am bi-polar too, but i never react to medications like i am supposed to. They tried me on xanax about 10 years ago and instead of helping to calm and soothe me it made things soooo much worse i ended up screaming uncontrollably for over 2 hours, just couldnt make myself stop. So i try to stay away from medications. I do a lot of meditation and self relaxation techniques. And when I feel angry for no reason i take a time out until i can get it under control. Hard to do with 2 small children, but they know when mommy says leave me alone for a few minutes mommy needs a time out, that it will help mommy feel better if they just let me work through it.

Well for depression, medicines are not solution. Do Meditation, try breathing exercise, it will help you balance and handle depression.

I don't take any medication for depression. I have in the past though. Life sure does take its toll on people sometimes. We all have to have some kind of medication sooner or later. I hope things get better for you.

Depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder runs pretty rampant in my family, too. As I get older I feel both anxiety and depression increasing, which makes me crazy and causes me to think I'm bipolar, too. Haha. My mom and both of my sisters take medication for their disorders, but I don't even want to get to that point. I'm not against people who use medication, but what it does is it just gets you completely dependent on it and the dosage starts to excalate. I think all three, except maybe being bipolar, can be cured by dealing with psychological problems and talking to a psychologist; learning how to deal with issues in a healthy manner. I wish you good luck! :)

I have a friend who is recently taking up prescription medicine for depression. My friend always goes to the doctor to check if it works. I think it is good to have doctors consulted always for medications such as this.

HI Easymoney: I've taken stuff since like 1993 when one of my brothers became sick with Cancer and I've been on depression meds ever since, thank Goodness or else I'd never get through the day and those around me appreciate it when I'm on my meds too...LOL!! When I miss several days for one reason or another I can really tell myself how my moods are and what is effecting me; you know?

I took effexor xr for a long time. It seemed to be the one that worked the best. I did have to keep increasing the dosage and after a year or so I had to start taking a second one to go w the effexor. I would really reccommend not letting them give you cymbalta though as I have recently heard that it is dangerous. With the effexor, it curbed all emotion for me. It was even hard to cry or get angry which was better for me than the alternative! Good luck... And bipolar has to be treated a little more aggressivly so if theres a good chance it is that you may need to seek a different class of medication...

hi, were you diagnosed with bipolar disorder too? i'm being treated for cyclothymia and i'm currently taking an anti-depressant (prozac) and a mood stabilizer (lamictal). this works better for me than depakote which i used to take instead of lamictal. depakote had a lethargic effect on me. right now my prozac dose has been lowered to 20mg per day from 60mg per day, but i felt more comfortable when i was on 60mg so i might talk to my doctor about that soon. i hope you find both the right type of meds and combination of meds plus the right dosage that works for you, because the medication part does help a lot with your body's chemistry. but for me, what really helps is not only the meds, but regular therapy sessions with my doctor. good luck!
