Another discussion I started got me to wondering something about technology. Is it possible for one on a computer to send a text message to a cell phone user at all? It just seems that with the modern technology that this should be possible with all the other advances that cell phones and computers have made in the past few years. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Yes I am in Italy and regularly use my computer to send free text messages to people I know who have the same phone company. I have been using this service for at least five years now.

So you can send them via the sell phone providers site with an account? The one on the computer doesn't need to have a cell phone with that provider either? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I do it all the time lol. I get 300 free text messages if I use my providers website. I use a prepaid phone so thats how mine works. Though I dont know how it works in other countries, but it does save me a lot of money that way. :-)

Yep!! Here in ireland you have to have a cell phone to use it because if I get a reply it will go straight to my phone instead of my comp. The U.S is a lot more advanced than here so maybe there is a way of doing it without having to have a cell phone. I use vodafone here and I think they are an international company.

Yes, you can. http://www.txt2day.com/ You can send free text messaging to any provider in the world. Some websites are having free service limiting number of messages you can send. You have to be careful, because recipient may end up having spam messages later on. It works in Europe much better because text messaging is free for cell phone owners. They don't have to pay for spam messages.

I know it works with verizon. If you are sending to someone with verizon wireless you go to verizonwireless.com (I think that's it) and you can text them for free. I think a few other sites have it too, you just need to know who their wireless carrier is.

Anyone can use it if the wireless provider offers it, you just need to know what the other persons wireless provider is. Say your sister has sprint and they have this service on their website. You go to sprint.com (or whatever it is) find where it says something like "send text message" and put in their phone number and the message. That's usually all there is to it, and they get the text message.

With some messengers you can send texts. I have yahoo messenger and you can. They call it an SMS message and you just put in the number of the phone your texting, type it, and they will send it as a text. The people that got the text can even send one back to your computer.

Hi Grandpa B, Yea, I am using that in txting my family and friends in the Philippines and it's also free but for them to reply me, they will be charged! What is nice about it is that, it's easy and fast to txt rather than in my phone! LOL!

I can send text messages to a cell phone through Yahoo Instant Messenger. I have done it a few times before. It is a really cool feature. It does not cost me to send and receive that way, so if someone wants to text a conversation I do it that way so I don't get charged. They still do, but I don't.

There is a way to send a text message from an e-mail address, although I don't know how to do that just yet. I usually have service on my cell phone, so I don't worry about that. Also, the local wireless service has an online service where you can send text messages from their website to any of their phones. I've used that in the past when my phone was having problems, and I couldn't send to a certain person on their service.

Well, I'm not familiar with any other service, but the local service here you don't have to register. You do put your e-mail address in the form to send it, and the phone number to which you are sending it to. I guess the e-mail is more of an identifier than anything. But once you do that you have 160 characters to type in, and then you hit send.

It always helps if I finish what I want to say before I push send.. Okay now...It is easier to send a text via of computer because typing is faster on the keyboard then trying to push itty bitty, teeny tiny, itsy bitsy, letters on the cell phone...I think so anyway.... I think I'm done now.....*smiles*

My daughter and and my niece has sent me messages from their sell phone. You have a section in your cell phone where you download your email address from the computer. And send it to the person they have to have the same email carrier ours is Yahoo and T-Mobile.
