I have heard a lot on mylot people who describe themselves as bi polar. I am totally ignorant regarding bi polarism. It seems that it cause extreme shifts in moods. I do have mood swings every now and then. How can you jude whether a person is bi polar or not?

Everyone has their ups and downs. That is quite normal.
We all have bad days and times when we feel depressed. If you are bipolar it is more extreme and the depression turns into bleak dark unrelenting despair.
The condition is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain and it can also create manic high feelings, when the person becomes hyper-high.

Very good description. Did you know recent studies have shown that in the years where forceps were used commonly and the baby perhaps came out with a black eye do to the forceps, that those babies were often later diagnosed with bipolar? Apparently there are several types of forceps and a person needs to be trained using every type. I thought that was fascinating because of 'brain damage' at birth a person can be bipolar. That is actually what my neurologist thinks happened to me since I have no history of it in my family.

I have not seen or heard that theory before. Does it often run in families?

I haven't done much research into bi polar either.
I'm fairly convinced that my mother has it, because of her regular "Jekyll and Hyde" mood swings for seemingly no reason whatsoever. She doesn't think she has a problem, but the more time I spend near her nowadays, the more I see just how insane she really is.
I see some of those same traits coming from me towards my boys sometimes, and that scares me. I start to wonder too, could I be bi polar and not know it?
I should take the time to do some quick internet researching, but I don't. I think it's fear based... I'm afraid to find out I may be more like my mother than I would ever want to be.

Because people who are bi-polar can go from happy to almost violent in seconds. They have mood swings that would do King Kong justice. And a whole slew of other problems. I would suggesting reading up on it a bit..Sometimes people can have mild case that isn't so bad. So maybe if you have it you have a very mild case.

If you suspect any problem it is best to speak to a doctor. People on these forums can give you all kinds of interesting advice, but it won't hold up to real medical advice. If you think there might be a problem you should see a doctor or look at a mental health clinic, and see what they can do for you.

I am one of those you probably have read about. I found out through friends at first and just thought it was a really mean joke. Calling someone "crazy" hurts more than people know. I later had a bad episode where I thought I was going to harm my boss for saying something mean to me. I went to my doctor and told her I thought I was having an anxiety attack. She said I was bi polar. There are all kinds of websites to look over and there are many in the field that know what they are doing. If you suspect that you are bipolar--call someone. It might be the greatest phone call ever!!

Bipolar is a type of mood disorder in which a person experience manic-depressive moods..i think bipolars have a pattern. for example, 1 week they get manic (happy, exited) but then the other week they get depress.that happen in a cycle.According to the book i have read, there are 2 types of bipolar.bipolar 1 (which has more symptoms of manic),and bipolar 2(more symptoms of depressive)..the most common is bipolar 1.

Mine is funny for me, like, right now I am manic-I am high in spirits and cleaning the house seems like nothing to me. Two days ago though, I hated the world and didn't know why. I was angry about everything, the house wasn't clean enough and we were out of milk. It's like reality isn't real, but a big hassle.

Hi ronaldinu, you are not bipolar! You would know if you
were believe me! I have a form of bipolar and you can
be sure that you definitely aren't even close. It is
a depressive disorder first of all. The mood swings are
very severe, but it is mainly a very severe form of
mood swings which if a person had them they would know
that there was something very wrong with them and so
would the people around them. They throw extreme temper
tantrums for one! Their moods are to the total exagerated
extremes. They are very high or very low. There is no
in between. Everyone has mood swings, but being bipolar
is no joke! It is a very serious manic depressive disorder
that is treated with medications. People with this disease
are capable of extreme violent outbursts.

Hello ronaldinu. I think you were talking about the bipolar personality disorder. My friends suspected me of having this, but I don't think I suit the characteristics. People who suffers from the Bipolar personality disorder seems having two very contradicted personality in different situation. They are easily depressed but when they are happy they become too happy. At least, that's what my doctor told me about the disorder.
Having your mood change is a common thing, but if the changing was extreme and you were like two different people in different mood, you are probably having it. I hope this would help you. Good luck finding yourself, ronaldinu

From what I know about this, it is not just slight mood changes. I believe it was also known as Manic/depression. Manic meaning extremely euphoric moods where the person feels immortal. The person may participate in extremely risky behavior. They feel that they are bouncing off the walls and that the world is moving waaaaaay tooooo slooooowly for them. They make impulsive major decisions and have very little reasoning abilities. Then they come down from that to a Deeeeeeep depression that is quite dibilitating. I have a sister in law who resists going to the doctor for these same symptoms. This is also common as the person especially loves the euphoria and medications can change that feeling for them. They often resist treatment.
