Bank error in your favor

If you have played a board game "Monopoly" there was one message in one of the cards in the game that said "Bank error in your favor - Collect $100". Yeah something like that. Well that happened to me just recently. I needed some cash for the weekend, so I decided to go and get it through an ATM. But whoah when I checked my balance there was about $200 more on my account that I didn't expect. This week I wasn't expecting any receivables from my clients, friends, family or even from a bank. I tried to trace how and where it came from. I couldn't find any clue where it came from. It took me almost a day to figure it out. I went to ask the bank to trace it. I found out it came from my credit card company. I was given some kinda gift for being a good payer. Whoaah. I thought my bank made a mistake. Normally some people would just leave it there or withdraw the money before it disappeared. I would have thought of that too, Yeah who wouldn't. Lol. But I was trying to be a good depositor and informed them if ever there was a mistake. How about you guys? Have you had any bank error experiences in your favor? If you did, would you have taken the money and spend it or would you inform your bank to trace if it was an error. Cheers!!! Happy MyLotting!!

That was a cool thing. I had a friend who received $20,000 which should not have been there in his account. His wife quickly withdrew the money and started spending it. When the bank was able to trace the problem, my friend had to pay back the bank.

Oh yeah, now that you mentioned it, I remembered my old friend in LA. Back when PayPal just started, there might have been a gliche and somehow there was $2,000 in his account. He withdrew it and spent it all. Later he got a notification from PayPal that there was a mistake and the money wasn't intended for him and he had to pay it back. His joy was shortlived. Lol.

Thats great! Congratulations. Free money is the best kind. I've never had this experience, but if I did, I would have done the same thing you did by telling the bank about it. I would be too worried about it to just try to take the money out and hope noone notices. If you took out the money and then the bank found out, I'm sure there would be some typr of penalty. Congratulations for doing the right thing.

I have often wished for a "bank error in my favor" but alas! It has yet to happen.. and any errors that have occurred have haply been my own! and likely was not in my favor!

I would inform them even if it was in my favour. They will find out sooner or later. I reason what is mine is mine, what its not I should return it back. Mother always taught me this principle in life and always told me to return back anything which did not belong rightfully to me.

It has never happened to me but if I were in that situation I would tell the bank about it and ask them if there was a mistake. I think that is the right thing to do. It would be nice to get some extra money, but I wouldn't feel good about spending it. I would feel guilty if I kept it and if I spent it on something I probably wouldn't be able to really enjoy the things I bought. I would always be worried about the bank. What if they found out about it and asked me to return the money? My serenity is more important to me than the money.

It's never happened to me personally. But I remember one of my ex-boyfriends finding an extra $1000 in his bank account. He took it all out and then got told later that it was a mistake and that he had to pay it back. I can't remember if he'd already spent all of it now though, lol.

That's a lot of money huh. Yes the banks can trace their errors that's why I did the right thing by telling them. But it turned out not be an error on their part for that deposit. I wasn't just advised earlier of the deposit made by my credit card company. Lol.

Thanks for the response.
