Winter Is Here - Christmas Approaches...

Christmas Spirit - The Christmas Spirit.

Winter is upon us now... the cherry tree out front is clinging to its final few, red leaves, and my hawthorn hedgerow is bare twigs apart from the ivy growing through it at intervals. The clocks were turned back last night and the day is quite dull, wet and windy. Besides all that, there are less than nine weeks to Christmas. Eeeeeeeeeek!!! Christmas!!! I have to get organised with cards, my Christmas cake, other Christmas cake orders and gifts! Where has this year gone? There's been so much happening that everything crept up on me again. Before the end of the month, I must sit down and write myself a schedule of things to do, and stick to it! How do you handle those last couple of months up to Christmas? Are you organised or do you take things as they come? The best laid plans sometimes fail, but there's ordering, card writing, gift wrapping, baking and all sorts to get through. How do you tackle it? Can you keep the Christmas Spirit? As I said, I shall be writing a list. If that list is adhered to then it will be a miracle, but at least if I write everything down there will be no excuse for missing it! Share your schedules with me?

I've been working on xmas gifts for MONTHS. I don't normally send out cards - i'm such a slacker - since we'll celebrate probably at my bro's or his girlfriend's I don't have to do that much except look nice for the meal. Since I have to work on the day, since its during the week (helpers paid by medicare don't get holidays) I have to work.

Awww, it's a shame you have to work on Christmas Day. I would have thought they'd have rotated it a bit so that you at least got Christmas Day off every so often. Anyway, all that taken into consideration, you seem to be pretty well organised and I'm sure everything will go very smoothly. It's nice not to have to cook for a bunch of people, although tiring as that is, there is an amount of satisfaction to be taken from seeing how happy everybody is with the entertainment you've laid on. I hope you enjoy your holiday time. Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution, my friend.

Since I chose to not have a family, I can bet that I can also chose to not hold big wingdings. I do know that most people don't want to come over to eat knowing I have all these cats....

I don't know where it's gone, my friend. There's been so much happening, I guess, that we haven't noticed the time passing by. Yes, remember how hubby loved Christmas and try to celebrate it in the way you always did together. He's still with you there in spirit... both of us know that, so include him in your celebrations... even set a place for him at your table if you wish to. Times are hard financially for a lot of us, I think, so we have to pull in our belts this year but we don't have to spend a lot of money to make it a good time. I just like to be with my family... it's all we need. Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution. xxx

Wowah! I'm in England Raven... our clocks turned back last night... sorry about the confusion but I just take it for granted sometimes that most of my friends already know where I am. You sound a little like me... always saying I'm going to get started earlier this year, but it sneaks up and bits you on the backside! lol. I never have and never will be ready to start before the end of October. It's the changing of the clocks that pushes me forward. I hope you get everything done, my friend, and have a great time at Christmas. I'm more interested in Yule and traditions really, but I celebrate both for the sake of the rest of the family. Brightest Blessings, and thank you for your contribution.

I like to plan, but I don't tend to be a planner -- since most plans fail for me, lol. Soon it'll be halloween here, and I've some pies and cookies to make outta some pumpkins. As soon as it's November, then we'll need to be thinking about Thanksgiving -- which is another big thing for my family. THEN I can worry about christmas lol. I try to take things a month at a time and deal with things as they come.

You do tend to have some rather heavy celebrations before Christmas in the States, my friend. Here, we have Harvest Festival around now, Samhain/Halloween and Guy Fawkes/Bonfire Night on the 5th November. Christmas is the BIG one though! Halloween is getting bigger but it's still not a major festival in the Christian, English world. Good luck with everything... I'm sure you'll have a whale of a time with all the special baking. I love all that! Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution.

Yes, I like partying and big family get-togethers for whatever reason. I also love baking, but can't stand as long as I used to so I have to do it in stages. lol. Thank you and I wish you a very enjoyable time as well.

Well, you know what they say -- we Americans are very fond of partying...and my family takes any excuse we can get to celebrate something worthwhile, even though we're not super well off. Means we have to be creative and adds to the fun! I'm really looking forward to the baking! Good luck with your Christmas preparations, huh?

Schedule? Schedule Darkwing - surely you know me better than that? To have a schedule I would have to be organised! lol I have started buying gifts for the kids and putting them away already but that is it! I don't think I need to buy cards apart from those that Niamh wants to send as i have so many left over from previous years and plenty of wrapping paper too but I do need to get going on the gift front! As far as wrapping goes - my best friend usually comes up a few days before Christmas and helps me to wrap up all my presents and anything left to do the other half does on Christmas Eve! We haven't even organised Christmas Dinner yet and by that I mean where it will be and what we will have! lol Oh well a hectic 9 weeks to come then! lol As for Christmas Spirit - anything apart from Gin works for me! lol xxxx

Please, don't remind me of the winter months, let alone Christmas! It's starting to freeze up here in Chicago, on top of the financial stress, the holidays are much less than priority right now! Taripre$

Wow... we've had a couple of light frosts but it's far too early for really cold weather yet, if we get any at all. I wish we could have snow every Christmas but alas... in this country, we rarely see it until January/February. The winters have become too mild. As for the financial stress, I find that interesting things can be made/obtained for the children without spending the hundreds of pounds/dollars required for computer games and such, and nine times out of ten, they're better appreciated. Christmas is what you make it my friend! Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution.

From my calculations, Chicago's not that far from Canada. I also think that the weather pattern has changed. We've had a couple of snowfalls already. It doesn't hang around long though because it's the wet stuff.

hmm, good point about Christmas, and it's been pretty much the same here in the winter months, maybe I'll spend winter in Canada one year Nah, won't do that, that would be crazy It's more than cold enough here in Chicago, so I'll take the snowless first half of winter if that happens this year, we may get ice all winter, who knows? for me christmas is like any other day, I do not do much anymore, I have no money to entertain and I am disabled so we just have christmas dinner alone and if we can afford the traditional turkey we have it, if not we just have whatever we have in the house to eat.

Your attitude is what makes Christmas special, my friend! I hope you have a wonderful time! I save money weekly, with my milkman, so that I can buy extra meat and food for the holiday period, thus leaving me a little to spend on presents. My family and my daughter-in-law's family take it in turns to go to my son's on Christmas Day, and on the years that we don't go on Christmas Day, we go on Boxing Day. So, the kids are very busy... I don't know how my daughter-in-law does it, but on Boxing Day, it's often jacket potatoes, cold meats, sausages, salad and all buffet style, which makes her work a little less. My son is a great lover of Christmas so he helps her out a lot and the males share the washing up between them, so it's great. It's just the preparation I get behind with these days. lol. Brightest Blessings my friend, and thank you for your contribution. xx

Oh my goodness, so soon? I can't believe it!!! You know i honestly thought that everyone stopped posting on mylot other than a few people? I just don't get discussions in my inbox anymore, maybe one or 2 a day from annoying friends i'd rather not recieve from, that's mean to say but hey.... I guess i'm going to have to start coming to look for your discussions, as you and about 5 other people always put a smile on my face hehe... Oh no.... christmas.... time to spend money... damn. As for how i handle things? Well, i WING IT! Yes, i just do whatever, the meal, i usually end up going to my mother-in-laws house for dinner, but i want to make one here this year too to have some left overs all to myself, so i'm making one christmas eve. as for gifts, whatever, when i see something, and it suites someone, i get it, but i usually end up running out 2 days before christmas frantic because i don't want to be christmas eve shopping... So yeah, i just take things as they come, there's better chance to enjoy everything that comes your way that way..... miss ya lady.

Wow... it's been a while since I was in here, my friend. I was quite sick for three to four weeks and as you know, have been busy in the other place. It's good to see you there... please visit more often, and feel free to start your own blog or forum, won't you? It'll be good to chat. I don't seem to get many notifications any more either, which is why I didn't know about this response before now. I don't know what happened but probably some other great Mylot upgrade to the site! lol. Now, what were we talking about... oh yeah, Christmas creeping up. I have four gifts only and five Christmas cakes and one birthday cake to do before December 14th, so it's a bit hectic, to say the least! But, I daresay it will be alright on the night... we shouldn't stress out so much about it. Nobody notices if you miss a few little things anyway. Brightest Blessings my friend and thank you for your contribution. x

Hi Darkwing, I just take it as it comes. We don't really have any plans for Christmas other than working during the holiday period. We are not expecting any visitors nor are we travelling away to visit family - it's too expensive. I do have to buy a few things for our son and nephew and neices, but I'm waiting for all the sales before I do that. We are going to keep it very low key this year. My son is looking forward to decorating the tree and placing HIS presents under it though LOL

That's what I like more than anything... helping each other out with decorating, sitting around a log fire with candles burning and the smells of the cooking, the cinnamon sticks and everything. It all gives you such a warm feeling. By the way, talking about warm feelings, we just experienced our first flake of snow. We're forecast rain in this part of the country, but snow is forecast from north London, right up into Scotland. Scotland and the North are forecast six inches of snow today! That's quite early for us. Brightest Blessings my friend, and enjoy your run-up to the Holidays. xx

Hi Darkwing, As soon as my daughters birthday is out of the way in September I start thinking about Christmas and in fact have already got all but one on my sons pressies and a fair amount towards my daughters and have my nephews, once the children reach eighteen we stop buying for in the family and friends circle so not too many more to organise. Cards though I tend to leave til last minute and it is a mad rush to get stamps and posted in time LOL. I did in fact have all my main Christmas meat too until last Friday when freezer went bang but was covered on insurance so it won't be egg and chips for dinner but frustrating at the waste of good food. New freezer arrives on Thursday so will do a shop then. I enjoy Christmas as it is one of the few times where we are all together as a family and we really enjoy. Huggles. Ellie :D

Oh cripes! What a time for the freezer to go! I suppose though that you're now assured that this one will last through the Christmas period. I buy stamps weekly from my milkman to buy my Christmas meat and party foods, etc, and they have to be ordered by November 6th. I'll have to start wading through the list soon... only a week to go! lol. They will probably be delivered about a week before Christmas, so handy! Saves me fetching and carrying. As for gifts and such, I can never get the kids to make their lists out until pretty late... probably at least the end of November, so that's always a rush at the end. Still, I only have an order for one cake this year, plus my own and a small, gift one for my Mum, so that's not going to be too bad. My granddaughter's birthday is on 14th December so I have to buy extra for her, and just put one aside for her birthday lol. I don't know about a meeting down there at the end of November. It would be a great break, but we'll have to think more about this, I feel. What do you think? Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution, my dear friend. xx

I Don't have the responsibility of cooking yet but when I do I know it's going to be a blast! lol! My fiance is a picky eater and as such I'd have to make him something for him (atleast a different side dish) and make sure everyone is happy with what's being served and prepared. Wow, it's just nine more weeks? It's hard to believe that it is almost Christmas again but it's beginning to look a little bit more like Christmas where I am too, atleast when it comes to leaves changing. I hope we have another snow blanketed Christmas. Well Merry Holiday Season!

Awwww... I wish that we could have just ONE snow-blanketted Christmas! We haven't had one in England for years and I so love Christmas when there's snow outside and candles in, with logs burning on the open fire. I love the nostalgia of it all. Oh well, we can always dream. Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution, my friend.

Christmas is a lovely period and I guess I always look forward to it. However, things have changed over the past few years! I used to celebrate Christmas when I had my family with me but now they have passed on and so I live alone. Yes, I still love the Christmas season but no, I don't go out of my way to celebrate it. I love some of the Christmas movies that come on at this time of year. I probably stick up a tiny tree with some decorations but that's about it! I don't decorate my place with loads of decorations. I do tend to try and treat myself with a good meal come Christmas Day. It sounds like you really get into the spirit of christmas and that is good. I think that everyone's mood starts to pick up at this time of year! Andrew

Hi Andrew! Yes, all my family have grown, moved away and have families of their own now but they all like to come together at Christmas and my son and daughter-in-law entertain. Christmas is my son's favourite time of year... he loves to give... whether it be gifts, food, drink or himself... he makes the most of it. So, I'm never alone for more than a few hours, and if I find I'm lonely, I'll call a friend or my sister over! Failing all that, a pre-lunch visit to the pub which is fifty yards from my front door, will find me all the good company I want up until 3 p.m. It's a time to do whatever you enjoy most, I think. Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution. x

Because I believe that Thanksgiving is criminally overlooked in the headlong commercial rush to Christmas, I give very little thought to Christmas until Thanksgiving is passed. It is also because my kids have birthdays during Thanksgiving time. Other than special music at church to practice, the other things happen if they happen, and if they do not, then you know what, Christmas will still come. I have massive amounts of cleaning to get done, but it needs done anyway and has been too long neglected. If I get the chance, I will do address labels to send out cards, not organized there at all.
@Darkwing (21583)
27 Oct 08
Our Harvest Festival time isn't celebrated so much as your Thanksgiving. There are special supper nights, and special church services but the bigger celebration time here is at Christmas. Of course, I prefer Yule, which begins for days before the Christian celebrations but I incorporate Christmas for my family's sake, as it's their favourite time of year. It all comes down to similar principles as most Christian holidays derive from the "old traditions". Anyway, I digress. We do have Samhain/Halloween on 31st October and Guy Fawkes/Bonfire Night on the 5th November, but after that, it's Yule/Christmas all the way. So much to do, and so little time. I save stamps for my meat, food hampers, drinks and sweets, with the milkman and orders have to be in by 6th November. That's one thing to think about... then we can progress to the rest. One of these years, I will be prepared! lol Brightest Blessings, my friend, and thank you for your contribution. x

It has been a very fast moving year, but one that I will be glad to see end. I pray that the next year is much better for all of us than this one has been. I do need to get myself organized for Christmas. I will start my cards this week probably as we may be moving this month and it will make it that much harder on me getting things done. I have started my shopping so that helps a lot and I intend to do some more shopping next week after I get paid. Once my husband gets his check from the job that he is on now, I will get to buy the kids Cristmas and it will be done. Good luck on your planning.

Wow... you sound very organised and as though you have it all planned out. Well done! I agree, this year has been the pits for at least most people in the World, and I will add my prayers and wishes to yours for a better year all round, next year. I think we've all been too busy trying to deal with the "here and now" to realise how quickly time has moved on. Never mind... onward and upward as time stops for no man! Brightest Blessings for a very happy holiday period for you and yours, my friend. Thank you for your contribution.

the other day, a friend sent me an email that tells you exactly how long till christmas. and it counts down the seconds. just what i need to know! with everything thats happened this year, i havent done much. plus affording it is going to be hard. but i will do my best. but i have started. the kids have given me their wish lists. and they are certainly wishing. i try to explain to them that its tough times, but they dont understand or dont want to. i have got my fruit in soaking for starting cakes and puddings. but i have been thinking i want to try a different recipe, but not sure which or if i should. my other halfs family are coming down, and rachelle is coming up (my eldest) and my nephew and goddaughter and their tribe will be here as well. i have thought of writing a list, but thats as far as i have got with that, and i cant ever find a pen as they go missing. this week i want to get all the lights out and start checking them, instead of leaving them till i want to put them up and they dont work. but i am sure i will get there, and it will be a good day. it is usually hot, and i am hoping to have fresh vegies out of the garden as well. i am doing salads this year, not the vegies. i have ordered the ham, and will have pork and chicken as well. well there is 58 days 1 hour 45 minutes and 30 seconds to go, so i better get moving best wishes and take care
@Darkwing (21583)

Lolol... you'll be forever checking how long to go, or my son would! Imagine how many seconds, minutes... even hours, that will take off your preparation time. At the moment, you seem to have it all worked out, but that e-mail could be your downfall my friend. Bin it!!! I somehow can't imagine Christmas lunch in the garden. I like the way it is at the moment, but we're short on snow in England! I'm putting my order in to Canada this year... I need a share! lol. Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution my dear friend. xx

First of all I do not send cards out any more. I do have gifts planned which most of them are home made. We go to one or two Christmas parties and that is that. A pretty boring life. I work part time and my husband works two jobs so he does not have time to go to parties.

I think that home-made gifts and cards are the best. I don't go to parties really. We have a dinner for the darts team prior to Christmas and a family get-together on one of the holiday days, (either Christmas or Boxing Day), it alternates. Brightest Blessings my friend and thank you for your contribution.

Hi Tamara! Do you not have an alternative card delivery service in your town? In Burgess Hill, the Scouts deliver cards for about a third of the price, in aid of charity. I think maybe the Round Table or Lions Club do a similar thing too, if you wish to look into that. Why should the Post Office have a monopoly on cards... they charge around 30p or so for each one, which makes it ludicrously expensive to post them. I post as few as possible... the local ones I either take by hand or use the Scouts' services. That little saved might help towards other stuff, so it's worth making some enquiries. As you say, nine weeks is not so long, and finances are tight for everybody at the moment. Christmas is what you make it, my friend and I know you have a little less time to Yule, as do I, but that's my most important time. Blow the commercial hubbub of today's Christmas... I want it all to be like Yule... forever! Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution, my friend. x
