Should high school students have to pay to play sports?

In Atlanta, 38 schools ask student athletes to pay to be on a team. Requiring students to pay to play sports isn't allowed, but some schools don't tell the students that the fee isn't mandatory. One school askes for $500 from each player! http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/stories//2008/10/26/hspayplay_1026.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab

If the school cuts the budget and parents want the program to stay open, somebody is going to have to pay for it. Why does the school make them pay, because its becoming an elite past time. If it came down to paying or playing I wouldn't pay. If your tax dollars can't fund the program then an inquiry needs to made into why its not being funded by the school.

This is the norm in Utah and has been for years. You also have to pay lab fees and book fees at the beginning of the year. The fees ARE mandatory unless you can show financial reason for not affording it. As many kids as they have out there, I just don't know how some families can afford it. But, $500 is outrageous. I understand their wanting to cut expenses so they can keep the extra-curriculars going, but that just seems extreme.

That is alot of money to ask from each person. I think thier should be a fee for playing the sports but that is awfully expensive.
