Well, I was watching the local news and they had an artical on the Gault site that is north of Austin, between Temple and Killeen. Well, I had to go investigate the news and found some articals to post for you guys. I know some of you are also fans of history/archilogy like I am so here are these interesting sites. http://www.texasbeyondhistory.net/gault/index.html http://www.utexas.edu/research/tarl/research/gault_intro.php http://www.athenapub.com/10gault.htm http://archaeology.about.com/od/gterms/g/gault.htm This is the single best Clovis "camp" site where the Clovis people apparently lived if not year around, at least returned year after year. They seemed to have probably built shelters and have proven that the Clovis people weren't just fast moving, mammonth hunters, but were also settling and harvesting the plants of the area and behaving more like other hunter/gathering societies.

I had not even heard of this. I lived in Austin many years ago. Sounds like something interesting.

If I were young and healthier, I'd probably be volunteering for the dig.

The mammoths probably migrated from winter to summer feeding grounds every year and the clovis hunters would have followed them on that migration hunting and gathering on the way. But when the herds reached the summer feeding ground, the hunters would have been able to make a semi - permanent camp probably close to a good hunting site such as a river where they could hunt the animals as they came down to drink. This site is probably such a semi - permanent summer camp.

It sounds like a good site, water, probably good hunting and also a supply of good quality flint. The valley bottom land would also probably have supported a good variety of edible plants and berry bushesThe rock shelters would certainly have been used and probably over a long period of time.

They would have hunted whatever animals were most available, if that was mammoths, that would be what they hunted. But I doubt if they would have passed up a chance to hunt any other sort of animal that presented itself.

This site is actually proving that the Clovis are probably less the mostly mammoth hunter they have previously been pictured as. This site is just off a prairie in a spring feed valley. It would be an ideal place to probably to spend at least 3 seasons, maybe even 4. There is also an abundunce of flint in the area and it is apparent from the site that there was tool repair and production. they have also found rock shelters at the site - so it is quite an interesting Clovis site.

As others have said, "Very interesting." Thanks for the links. I wonder if they've found anything else besides the blades/projectile points?

They've found bones and indications that some of the blades were used for harvesting grasses. Also seems to be some incised decorations.

I love learning about ancient peoples. While I know perfectly well I'd've probably not survived infancy I love to learn how these people lived.
