If you had amnesia...

would you want to have all your memory back and find out that you've been a very bad person to everyone around you or would you rather not and start a life without a past at all? (I choose the former since I'd rather have a past that I could learn from.)

I think I would like the fresh start actually. What's done is done and if destiny means I am doomed to repeat some of my mistakes then at least I would be facing issues in my life with a fresh perspective! The downside though is not knowing all the people from your past anymore.

Hypothetically speaking? What are you trying to say SaintAnne? Hmmmm?

Well, all those people from your past probably hate you anyway because you were just so mean to them, hypothetically speaking.

In the case you have just described I would rather start out with no past at all. That way I could create whatever past I wanted, right here from the present.

Hehehe, I answered from my inbox too, so you can rest assured I wasn't influenced by the others!

I'm way past you being influenced by anyone or anything, ziggy. That's why I like you very much. You say the things that I say sometimes, you say the things I want to say sometimes and you say the things I don't even think about which is refreshing like a nice cold soda!

Hey zig, you're the first one to go against the memory-back flow. I expected nothing less!

I would rather know all about my past. its difficult to start blank and new when you know that you had a life previously. Whatever It my be, a criminal life, a good life, a normal life, I would rather know it. I would take it as a second chance to live and live it more substantially and the way I want it to.

Thanks mou. Second chances are always good and like you said, we ought to live it more substantially because we've been given another chance at life.

this is a tough question. just like you i would choose the former not only that i could learn of my past but at the same time knowing that i was a bad person in the past doesn't mean that i can't change my old ways for a better me in the present and in the future. with this i can even ask forgiveness to those that i have hurt in the past and enjoy life with these people.

Hi there! I also would choose having a past. The past is still a part of me though I may have been bad. At least I have something to think about and a reason to change. I also would know if there are people whom I have hurt and angry with me then I would like to ask forgiveness from them. I think every past is important - good or bad. The past is what makes us who we are. I also agree with you that we can learn something the past and learning from it can make us a better person in the future. Ciao!

Well I believe that no one is born bad. God never made anyone bad. People who became bad can come back being good again, always.

Thanks, iskayz. I do hope that when we realize that we've been bad before, we try to do those things you mentioned like asking for forgiveness and try to change. I really want to put my faith in the human race and think that we all can be better people as we learn from our past.

Hi there anne..Well I will choose to come back eventhough I am still a bad person because I don't want to forget the special memories that remain just a memory and then suddenly will be gone like that.Being a bad person can change and no matter what it takes past is still part of my life.Without the past then I don't know who I am.Maybe there are lots of reasons why I don't want to forget it but you will let me choose to forget something then I will just the past that I don't want to remember but not all..:-0 God bless and have a nice day..:-0

Thanks insulin for sharing with us your thoughts. There's a lot of myLotters here who think the same way about the past and how going back to it and mending our ways can change it in the present and future. Thanks again!

Starting a new life without any past memories is easier said than done. Moments of happiness and joy are derived from our feelings of sadness and pain. And as you have mentioned as well, we learn from our experiences.

You are quite right, alokn. How can we know we are happy if we've never been sad? If we haven't experienced a feeling, then how can we know its difference from another one. Thanks!

Well, first of all, that could not happen, as I am a very good person. Not a door mat, to be sure, but a very good person nevertheless. But I believe that those who do not learn the lessons of history are destined to repeat them, so I would want to know my own past as well as the past of my society. So I think that we agree there. And assuming one were a bad person or a person who did some bad things, not remembering them does not make them less bad. So if what comes around goes around, then a person who had some past to redress could be very confused when bad things happen.

Hello drannhh, it's good to know you have nothing to worry about your past. I think I have at least five that I could think of that I'm still waiting to bite me in the a. You know what I just thought of though, there's still a lot of people who have done bad things in the past and still don't understand why bad things happen to them too.

hi saintanne I too think I would like to get my past back and start over fresh making sure everyone knew I was a different person now, and not a bad person any longer. I think if I started over fresh there would be people who would remember my past and throw it up at me over and over, so why not get all your memory back and face the blasted past.

That's a good reason why you choose to still have a past. At least now you know why people in that past don't really want to be around you and then you try to win them over again. Thanks, Hatley.

Hello SainAnne! I'd rather know my past because I believe life is pretty much difficult and empty without the knowledge of our past events/activities. They may be unfavorable and hurting but at least the knowledge we'll learn from them is truly rewarding.

I'd rather know of my bad past because I know I could always make a fresh new start because my bad self is in the past. At least I know which bad things should I change and in that way I could learn how to start all over again.

Hello, CJay. You and your hubby have different answers. I think it's really good to learn from our mistakes in the past... but what if we still become that bad person in the present because we didn't know we were that way in the past?

Good or bad of my history are still my rich experience. its true that sometime I want forgot the bad one. Even I have a negative balance in my account. lol But I know that I may not run away from my responsibility. The good thing of my bad is I can advice our family or fiends not to do what I did

Hi anne, I agree with you! No matter what I had done I would still want to know. I wouldn't want to wipe out my past. I may not like what I find out, but it still was my past so I would need to know. Since we know that you can't change the past and can only learn from it I know that I wouldn't be able to live in good conscience without knowing if I had really done something terrible to someone. I would have to find out to see if I could fix it or I wouldn't be able to live my life in peace.

But wouldn't you just like to go on with life not knowing that you did something terrible in the past? I don't know if I would go and try to fix everything in that past. Then I'll just be living most of my present in the past. I don't know if that makes sense to you.

I would prefer to have my memory back. I would feel ashamed of myself if I found out that I had been a bad person to everyone and I would regret my behavior, but would still prefer to remember the things that happened. It would be a part of me and a part of my history. I might not like to think about what happened, but if I know the facts I can learn from it and hopefully that will prevent me from making the same mistake again.
