With Samhain/Halloween Approaching...

Jack O'Lantern - A pumpkin lantern for Halloween.

... I'd like to share another poem with you about the festival and the thinning of the veil. I tried to write it with the past in mind as well as the present and combine the two. I hope you like it... my last for a while, I promise! lol. The Thin Veil at Halloween Listen hard on Halloween You'll hear the church clock strike thirteen. You'll know the veil has now grown thin Allowing the long lost souls to step in. The moon will shine its silver glow, The candlelit window lets them know You welcome them back to your supper table Feeding them as well as you are able. Don't be afraid, for these souls are lonely Coming back to visit for reasons only To let you know what is to come When your life upon this earth is done. Celebrate this sacred night With jack o'lanterns and candle light, Warm yourselves around the fire And feast with the ancients to heart's desire. Children in costume will knock your door Hoping for candies and treats galore, Just as in ancient days long gone Soul cakes were given to everyone. Broth will be stirred and pumpkin pies baked, A few jars of cider, ye merry to make, Apples will bob up and down in a pool As we try to catch them with teeth as our tool. But never forget 'tis a night of the fae, They'll visit your garden before break of day, So save them some gifts to put out for them And they'll not cause you mischief or create mayhem. Leave out some food for passing souls, Pieces of apple, cheese and rolls, To help them on their weary way Back to the other side where they'll stay... ...until next Halloween. That's it... I'll leave you all alone with the poetry now. I just thought it was a poem for the moment. What will you all be doing at Halloween? Are you attending parties and such? There is going to be a party at the local pub with Spooky Punch sold in jugs, and a demon's disco! Then on the Saturday, a more refined evening, with a special set dinner and a live band. All is in fancy dress and prizes will be given for the best. Sounds like fun, but I have my own bits and bobs to deal with first!

For some rason I started to cry while reading this. do the lost souls be the people that we dont let go all the way? Will the food disapear? If I put some out/ AS for halloween , the church that granddaughter goes to had hallowwen night last night with hot dogs chili chips and cold cuts and punch. Then we went around to the cars that people set up to give out treats!. Then Friday night she will go out again. Not sure if I will go or hand out candy as this will be first halloween night her daddy will be home to go with her. She is dressing up like a little green Dragon so cute!

It doesn't HAVE to be cheese. You can put out whatever you like, but in the case of your having cats and dogs, it would probably be better to put it out of their reach.

I don't do Halloween - but I'll put a costume on any other day of the year! I used to be a demon at bobbing for apples, used to piss other people off. Don't know why I'm so good, but... there you are. know any other time you can bob for apples???

Thank you, my friend, for your comments about my poem. Apple bobbing champion, eh? Well, I guess you could do it any time of the year, but October is a good time for abundance of apples. Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution.

maybe its because I'm not afraid to get my head wet - it isn't because I have buck teeth!

Hi Darkwing, That is a lovely poem, I love it and it anwers what is Halloween all bout to those people who don't know. I hope you have a lovely time. I will be going to a friends house to do our own bit and I have my pumpkins and all sorts to put outside my home, though my hubby thinks I have completly lost the plot but he don't mind eating the pumpkin pie that I will cook. Happy Halloween and Bright Blessings. Tamara

Thank you, my friend. I'm glad you liked it, and yes, I tried to incorporate tradition with modern day, as that's where it all stemmed from. I wouldn't worry what anybody else thinks about your pumpkins and celebrations, as long as you feel comfortable with what you're doing and believe in the reasons why. Go ahead... it sounds wonderful to me. I will have candles in my windows all night, but have to be careful of fire, so will probably end up staying up until dawn. You're right though... putting pumpkin lanterns outside, maybe near where you put your offerings sounds like a greater and much safer idea. I might do that and go to bed at a decent time. Enjoy your celebrations with your friend. Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution. x

I love that poem! It's perfect for getting into the mood for Halloween. My daughter and I will be heading to her dad's to take a whole herd of kids out trick or treating. Including adults there will be close to 30 people! Needless to say no one messes with us at all. LOL

Hi Darkwing that is a lovely poem and is just so apt for this time of year,it is a time for celebration and frivolity, the way you have put it into words has just made it Halloween/Samhain come alive...there will be no excitment my end apart from my bits and bobs..it's too cold and expensive to go out!! Brightest Blessings littleowl xx

I regard my initial rites as quite reverent, my friend... even do a bit of scrying, but afterwards, I just might wander down to the pub for a bit of frivolity, just to round off the evening! I'll get the serious part out of the way first though! lol. Brightest Blessings and Joyous Samhain to you, my dear friend. xx

Having a nice ritual that evening and also fun with the grandbabies...with the treats and cupcakes....wanted to have a party of fun but funds wouldn't allow anything big this year..hopefully next when more can come.. Huggs

Me too, my friend. However, I think that after my rituals, I might just let my hair down and wander down to the pub to join in the fun there. I won't need fancy dress if I keep on my robe, huh? lol. Brightest Blessings... have loads of fun, and thank you for your contribution.
