I was shocked to read this article since it involves my profession. To be assaulted by a five year old is a really gross thing. The teacher risk losing her vision. What has happened to today's children??? http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20081031/local/primary-school-student-injures-teacher A primary school student, aged five, has pushed a crayon into his teacher’s eye, putting her at risk of serious consequences. The teacher, who is still under medical observation, has reported the incident to the police. The Malta Union of Teachers expressed its solidarity with the teacher and said it expected that she would be given all the necessary assistance should this be required. The union said that such incidents could be avoided through an adequate service of professionals, including psychologists, counsellors and social workers.

Children that age can react suddenly, how could the child reach her unless she was at his level. Accidents do happen when interacting with any child, I would want to know more about the situation before I could really comment about it. Was it intentional?, did the child mean to hurt the teacher? and why.

This is one of the few intelligent comments in the whole discussion. Isn't it possible the child had a crayon in his hand and reached out for some reason, just as the teacher moved forward?

The world is going wrong way I think. This is really sad to hear, I always thought this young children are innocent and would not be able to act like psychopaths. I was obviously wrong. The background where children grow up influence them from really from early age, maybe also television plays a role in this behavior. I just can not believe this child could be naturally bad, there had to be something neglected.

Well parents aren't allowed to correct their children without the threat of children service or cops being called and so some kids run wild without authority. There is the wrong way and right way to raise and correct a child some parents need to learn alternative way to correcting their children besides paddling. I feel that unless society gets a grip back on their children somehow that things are only going ot get worse..look a 8 year old boy killed two adult men recently what is next?

The sad part is that if there were parents that had taught the little boy right from wrong , none of this would have happened. It is sad that parents don't know how to teach their children. Here in the States , spanking is deemed a no-no so some parents , not knowing how to discipline their kids any other way, just let the kids do whatever they want.

First, we should know why the 5 years old children pushed crayon into his teacher's eye, I think both the teacher and the boy's parents should have a deep thought on this issue. Definitedly, his parents should take on the liability about their son's behavior, this is not a gusty things.

Hi there ronaldinu This is really shocking. I have 3 boys aged 3, 5 and 7 and would be totally shocked if one of mine had ever did such a thing at school. They have not so much as hit another child let alone strike out at a teacher. I think my kids would know how disappointed I would be in them if they did so they choose not to express their anger in such a way where people get hurt!

The artical really doesn't say what actually happened. It states only that the teacher was poked in the eye with a caryon. The artical treats the incedent as though the 5 year old attacked the teacher. % year olds are pretty small for a teacher not to be able to stop him from sticking a crayon into her eye. There has to be more to the story.

What do you mean what happen to our children? My children are just fine thank you very much. They have never struck or even thought of striking a child. I am sorry that this happened. But at the five this child could be dealing with mental or psychological issues.. If the child sees a parent do this or something along the lines like thsi at home. They will imitate. Being only 5 yrs old. I not only feel for the teacher but the child as well.

It's time for those kids to take revenge on teachers.. MOSt of the time, we will only hear of teahcers hitting or beating of students.. But now, the students have finally hit back.. SOmetimes, it's not the students fault, but rather it's the teacher whom had pushed them too hard.. And as a teacher, i'm sure u know what the things sometimes u will do in order to motivate the students to study or work harder.. BUt to them, it's a kind of pressure and so they cant handle the pressure.. SO when they finally break down, they tend to do such damaging and hurtful things, that they din even thought they would do it..

Don't blame the children, blame the parents! It's the parents' job to socialize the children so that they can get along with others. Before they are five they should be taught to share, to consider others' feelings, to be polite, to eat properly, to play nicely. Parents are not doing their job. I feel that if one parent doesn't stay at home with the children, a couple shouldn't have any children. Children need LOTS of attention, not just "quality time", and we'll be seeing a lot more of violent behavior like that poor child if parents don't get their act together.

What I want to know is what makes a child become that way? Is this behaviour that is copied from home? I hope that they not only look into why this child did this but what is happening at home that would make this child this way. I hope that this teacher does not lose her eyesight in that eye.

I feel so sad about this since i am also in the teaching profession and i teach kindergarten. Some children really have the capability to do such thing. These kids really need to be evaluated and given the right intervention so as not to make the behavior worsen. It is important for teachers to know what their students are capabale of doing.

How about a good whoopin"!That is what is wrong with these kids. The parents I think should start accepting responsibility of their children's behaviors. And follow through with their punishments. It is their job as parents. We have to teach our kids so they can be successful citizens later in life.I blame the parents!

What a shocking news... i wonder why the 5 year old did that... since it was not mentioned in the news article... but i agree that the child should be given help rather than be condemned with what he/she did... and the parents should also be put under parenting classes... since if their child did that... then there must be something wrong with how they are raising the child...

LOL! This is the reason I quit teaching. If that hapless teacher had tried disciplining this brat, the brats parents would have come down heavily on the teacher. Since the teacher was patient, the teacher got assaulted. Either way, teachers are in trouble. And I thank God I am no longer a teacher. Cheers and happy mylotting

i felt sorry for the teacher... children of young ages would do something that they dont really understand, that's why even at a young age, parents or guardians should tell the kids the proper use of things and that poking things at a person is not good.

Some parents just let their children do everything they want, I hate such parents. they don't teach their children what's right and what's wrong, whenever their children doing something wrong, they just let go. For children who made such a mistake, parents should take most of the responsibilty. There's a mother, whose daughter stole my birthday gift, refuse to return my present gift back because there's no proof that the gift was mine. See, such an unresponsible mother!
