Michigan Woman Refuses to Give Candy to Obama Supporters' Kids on Halloween

"Shirley Nagel of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., handed out candy Friday only to those who shared her support for the Republican presidential candidate and his running mate Sarah Palin. Others were turned away empty-handed." I don't care who you support in the election. It isn't fair to turn away kids whose parents support another candidate. What do you think? http://home.peoplepc.com/psp/newsstory.asp?cat=Strange&referrer=welcome&id=20081101/490be250_3ca6_15526200811011482806141

What the hell does Halloween have to do with politics? This is ridiculous and you are right....those kids did not deserve to be treated unfairly. I will never understand nor want to understand why people become so empassioned to the extent they will hurt others. They make no point other than they are ignorant and biased. And what purpose did something like this serve if it is true? Like other recent episodes involving both sides....the only thing this shows me is if we are led by emotions and other's influences we will surely only turn amongst ourselves.

I didn't care about politics when I was that age, and I'm sure many of the kids she turned away didn't care either. It isn't fair to be punished for what your parents believe.

That is terrible. I just do not see how people can do things like that to a child just because of their voter beliefs.

This woman is a whack job and is just using her political agenda to make children feel bad because their parents are Democrats. Not to mention, she's turning her hate onto children simply because their parents don't agree with her. This is what bugs me about most republicans. They make sure to hit people low so they feel bad for not agreeing with them. I think someone should sue this woman for discrimination. I'm sure they can make a case.

For starters, I don't think most kids who were trick or treating really know or care who the presidential candidates are. So I'd say it's really unfair of her to bring that into the matter. Now, don't get me wrong, there are several valid reasons for refusing to give a kid candy on Halloween. If a kid comes to my door in jeans and a t-shirt w/ the logo of their favorite baseball team claiming that their costume is "I'm a ____ fan?" Well, if you're normally a fan of that team... that's not a costume, is it? That would be like me entering a costume contest in my everyday clothes and saying "I'm a mom." If a kid comes by more than once (we give good candy), it's definitely cool to turn them away. But to bring politics into something that is supposed to be a good time for children... that's deplorable.

It is so disheartening to read about such narrowmindedness. This election has gotten so out of hand, more than any other I can remember. This is supposed to be America, the best country on this earth. Recently I read about people sneaking around in the middle of the night stealing campaign posters and destroying property owned by people displaying them. We should be free to express our opinions in this counrty without having to worry about repercussion. This principle is what America was founded on and is why our people are dying in Iraq!!! How did she know who the parents supported anyway? Isn't that why we have secret ballots in this country? I am going to have to check this story out myself. Thanks for supplying the address. I think this lady may need to worry about repercussions for her stupid actions!! I don't condone it, but some people just bring these things on themselves.

I must say, its a real shame that you have to force your beliefs on other people and if they dont agree with you they get punished. Poor kids. All they want is to have fun and get candy. I agree with the other members when they say what does giving kids candy on Halloween have to do with politics? Nothing what so ever. Its someone punishing the poor kids for not agreeing with their choice for a candidate. I too, could care less about politics when I was younger. I just wanted my candy, and not apples or those popcorn balls either, lol. Whats next? Not giving candy to certain races because you oppose their color? Its really a disgrace and goes against what America stands for, the land of the free, the home of the brave. I wouldnt be surprised if her house got egged or tp'd real bad or got complaints from neighbors for her behavior. On the other hand, as sick as people can be, maybe its a good thing she didnt try and sabotage certain candy to give it to those who supported the other candidate. This world is crazy with a lot of sick people in the world and is getting worse by the minute. Cant we all just get along?

That is so wrong! Kids don't have any idea about the whole thing. It is a kids holiday, not adults polital holiday. If she was going to be like that, she should have not given any out.

I read about this story this morning online. I think it is crazy. I think it is good that people want to get excited about the election and the candidate they support, but a line needs to be drawn somewhere. I think it is okay to talk about the election and why you support one candidate, but I think it is wrong to press your views on someone else too much. My viewpoint doesn’t even concern kids. There is no reason whatsoever that they should be brought into this. Withholding candy from kids because their parents do not support John McCain is beyond wrong.

I think it is crazy, too. I think a lot of younger kids don't even care about the election anyway. Still, even if they do, it isn't fair.

I refuse to help UNICEF because they support abortion for Third World Children, but now the candy manufacturers have put out chocolate bar boxes with the logo that they have a portion of the money goes to UNICEF. So I can see her point, but then I do not like Halloween anyway. But my husband bought the box, and we could not return it. So I was stuck giving those candies away. But really why do the parents have to use their children to support their candidate anyway? They could have kept quiet not tell their children, "now dear tell everyone to vote for ----"

This is really twisted. Halloween is a children's holiday and to force the kids into adult decisions is really mean. I doubt any of the kids were old enough to vote and their parents weren't trick or treating so all she really did was make alot of little kids feel bad. Hopefully the locals will know she did this and will take steps to make her feel just as bad as the kids did. Refusing her service at a store, restaurant or local hangouts should get the message across. She shouldn't take her dislike of 0bama out on little kids. Although this is an old discussion, I still felt like adding to it by saying that I think it's really dumb for anyone to take their personal feelings out on little kids. The kids have nothing to do with voting. She seems to have a few screws loose. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

I think she does, too. Those kids aren't responsible for deciding who their parents voted for.

I don't care for politics either but I have to admit anyone who has candy can withhold that candy from kids. Who knows she might be doing these kids a favor and saving them from a trip to the dentist. Cheers!!

Ha! That's great, B.O. not the President yet, if he gets elected then candy won't be the only thing she'll be giving away, i.e. her paycheck, her freedom, her rights.

Thats not a very fair thing to do...kids cant control who their parents support and everyones allowed their opinion. Anyways...I think its rude to say "so who are you going to vote for?" then not give their kids the halloween treats...turning somethign fun into something political.

Like you said, it isn't the child's responsibility. They can't even vote yet.
