Are you a thrift and/or yard sale shopper, or even a garbage picker?!!

I find more reward in shopping in thrift shops, yard sales and online auctions and sales than I do going to a retail store. I think it is like hunting or a scavenger hunt. You never know what you will find that is a great buy. I would rather spend 20 dollars that way, than any other way. Some of the best things I own I even picked up from some people's trash. My dining room table someone else was tossing out and I took it home and refinished it. The chairs came from the trash bins of a furniture company that my son worked for. They just needed some repair. How about you?

Oh yes, I love to bargain shop. I often shop at thrift stores and yard sales. You never know what you will find. Sometimes you can find some pretty great things for an awesome price! I have also picked up furniture that someone had put on the curbside with a "free" sign stuck on it. Some people get new things and then throw out some pretty decent furniture or other things in return. You know what they say, one person's trash is another person's treasure...or something like that

More than half the furnishings in my home were bought at yerd sales, thrift shops, from the trash, etc. Even when I buy new, I 90 percent of the time, I will not pay full price. I love using free cycle, too, as well as cheap cycle. I have found and gotten rid of things that way.

Is there anyother kind of shopping? I can shop a lot longer on the money i spend at a yard sale or thrift store than i can in the mall.

I think I am a garbage picker. One reason for me to think so is that I will get my things from other's garbage. To me, what they throw away is good enough. I can keep them and use them for a long period. Now the notebooks and the clocks and the boxes are all got from the garbage. The other reason is that I never spend too much money to buy new things, I always buy things which are not liked by other people. My mother feels terrible on my behaviors, and now she try to change my habit.

I see nothing wrong with it. Unless something cannot be cleaned properly, why not? LOL

Hi nanajanet! I am big fan of thrift shop or yard sale! Back in my country theres a lot of thrift shop and big yard sale that are very nice! I bought some clothes, towels, comforter and they in a very good condition. My mother in-law actually work in Red Cross and she is the one arranging the displays in all the thrift shops and sometimes she send us some nice clothes.

When my daughter needed work clothes, she went to thrift shops and resale stores, first and found many outfits for the total cost of under $40. They are all still in style and good condition and look great on her.

I am totally on the same page as you. There is so much that you can find out there that are treasures. My favorite though is the actual in person auctions that I go to. As a matter of fact they are having an antique toy auction near me on Tuesday. Guess where I will be.....LOL.

Yes, I have been to a few auctions, but they are usually when I cannot go, so I do not get to go to many of them. I have found some great stuff at them but am annoyed when I get beat out. At a shop or sale, if it is there, it is mine!! LOL

Guilty! I work for a nonprofit that has a thrift shop and have caught the thrift shopping bug. One of our regular customers pointed out that a Lenox vase is still Lenox whether purchased for $1 in a thrift shop or at a high priced mall. You can't argue with that logic. At the shop, we also work with juvenile offenders. As part of their community service we teach them how to redo items or fix them. Sometimes we get lucky and the kids are even receptive!

Yes, that is true!! One time I brought my mother to a local thrift shop and they were having dollar day on all dresses. I picked one up, had her try it on, it was fabulous! It had a small hole on top that was easily covered with a broach (pin). She wore it to work and a friend of hers said, "Dorothy, that is a beautiful Evan Piccone dress!! Where did you get it?" She said, "My daughter bought it for me." Her friend said, "Wow, she must have money to afford that!" It was an expensive designer dress. No one knew but us! LOL

I have never picked up something that people where going to throw away before, but I do shop on eBay, at yard sales, and in thrift stores. I like getting good deals. One of our local thrift stores has a 50% off day, so I usually try and go then. I agree that part of the fun in hunting for a good deal and something nice.

I also buy on eBay and sell on there, too. Craiglist is a good source for finding cheap or free items, as well as Freecycle.

I also love to bargain shop. I usually don't hit thrift stores and never garbage pick, but I do love garage sales, household sales and just the clearance racks in stores. My family says that I have a clearance radar because I always find the clearance first in every store. I did get a ping pong table off of freecycle and just cleaned it up and gave it to my kids for chritmas last year.

I like going to the thrift store to shop and find some deals. I never got anything out of a garbage before. Have you ever been to craigslist or freecycle? People throw things out and let you know they are getting rid of it. Good luck with your bargin hunting.

I use, to get and get rid of stuff, freecycle, cheapcycle and craiglist as well as eBay and other auction sites. What is better than cheap or free? It is more fun than buying new stuff, even if it is gorgeous because you know you got a real deal and if you refinish it, can be proud of it.

I have found many bargains and even things that I didn't need by going to garage sales and yard sales and thrift stores. In the summer months, my sister and I would go most Sat mornings after she got off work, and shop until the sales closed and then hit the shops that were still open. The other day I realized I had 4 lamps that I'm not sure what I was going to do with, so when my son asked, I gave him 2 of them. One of them I had only paid a dollar for just last weekend. The Goodwill is my best friend!

When I was younger, my mom and her best friend and my sisters and I used to go to the sales all the time and my mom's friend would try on dresses all the time. We would laugh at her, and now find ourselves doing the same thing. This last summer I bought a small George Forman grill for $3 and an inflatable pool that hadn't been used for $3 as well as booster seats for my daughter's 2 sons for $5 a piece. It always amazes me the things that I have found. I can't remember how little I paid for the small color tv I have in my room and an old wooden high chair.........I think $5 a piece. People just don't believe that I spend so little on these items and I LOVE shopping for them. I also collect hippos and buy them wherever I can find them, but that sure isn't very often, so I buy them up.

That is the great thing about it. I will buy something and maybe find that I do not need it, but I paid $1 or $2 for it!! I always wanted a juicer and found a NEW one at a yard sale, still in the box, for $2. I used it a few times and then never really did after that. When a friend's husband was fighting cancer, I was able to give it to her to help with his diet. She could not afford one and she has had it ever since!

well i'm a yard sale person. i love to buy all sorts of stuff that other people may not want once i find it useful to myself. i by clothing once the tag is still on it lol, old orderments, jewellery and a number of other great stuff. my mom likes to buy old funiture for she is an upholsterer. she brings back things better than you can ever by them at a store. she also does all the painting work also. she sometimes sells stuff she bought and did over, i guess she does business after she buys from yours. i see nothing wrong with buying second hand things, i have alot of fun at those sales. especially when there's only one of a certain item left and two people want to by the same thing, so the owners are put in a persition to auction it. its amazing of the price someone will pay for an old chair or table when they really want it.

I love yard sales, estate sales and thrift shops. I used to go garage and yard sale shopping on a regular basis a few years ago, I have found some very nice and gently used items. I have not been in a department store in so long it is crazy. I have purchased sweaters, jackets, household appliances, computer you name it from yard sales and very nice prices. I am talking about a dollar or two. I bought the computer I am using for only ten dollars, and have had it for about two years. I go to church in a very wealthy town, and always look out for things on their bulk garbage days.

Thrift shops and garbage days are great in rich towns. I am amazed at stuff they toss. I bought a brand new outfit once. It still had the tags on it for $300. I paid $6.

I have been to thrift shops and I find some furnuitures really cheap and useful. But i dont really enjoy going to a yard sale . I just cant understand why i cant find really good stuff from yard sales. i might not be good looking through piles of different stuff.

For yard sales, I think part of it has to do with the area you are located. Also, I find it is best not to be looking for anything in particular and go like you are just window shopping. I rarely go in looking for anything in particular but always find what I need when I need it.

I pick up things here and there from yard sales and thrift stores. I mainly pick up books because I never see anything else that suits me. I love those antique store that are more a junk store than antique stores because I can usually find old postcards from the late 1800 early 1900's and I love collecting those. I would never dumpster dive!!

I am not a dumpster diver, either, lol, but my nephew, when he was a teen, would go to the dumpsters of the local factories, get this great stuff, sell it at yard sales we would have, and make a nice chunk of money. This stuff would have been in landfills and he took the time to dig it out. At least the dumpsters were not dirty like ones with regular trash, or he would not have done it.

I love the scavenger hunt aspect of estate sales and thrift shops. I love thinking about the history of some of the pieces while shopping. My best find ever was a set of French serving pieces. Trays or bowls of varying size and form, simply white, but so classic and elegant looking. I never use one without getting a compliment on it. When all my other serving pieces are just not doing the trick I can pull out these seven pieces and guaranteed one will be just perfect for what I need. I paid $12 for the seven pieces. I have an online friend who lives in NYC and belongs to an online scavenging site. One of the members allows the use of his warehouse to members for cleaning up and repairing their finds. It sounds like they have the time of their life, sometimes climbing through garbage dumpsters. Lol

I like thrift stores, but I donot like yard sales so I do not go to them. What I am best at is dumpster diving. I have some stores that go behind and check their dumpsters on certain days. I find all sorts of things that are new with tags and things right out of the store that are left in the box after stocking. I get some great finds and name brand clothing too

I seldom shop anywhere other than thirft shops and yard sales. I have found some really good bargains at yard sales. This past summer I found all new matching cushions for my lawn furniture at a yard sale for $5.00. I love treasure hunting. My porch swing came from a person that had sit it out to be taken off and it needed a chain to hang it up with. It was in perfect condition. I seen a show once on discovery where these guys went around the neighborhood and picked up furniture that people sit out and they picked up a discarded table and made a nice pool table out of it. After they refinished it they took it back to the place they got it from and knocked on the door and left. People were stunned at what they did with it. I think it was called junk brothers or something like that. It's amazing what can be done with another persons "trash"! LOL

Yes I love to bargain shop as well! This summer we spent $25 for a huge world map encased in a real wood frame and glass. It take up at least a 6X4 space on the wall. That was my fiance's want. My find was fifty cents for a bug light (it works) and 50 cents for a crock pot (it works). I love yard sales, garage sales, thrift stores and good will! You got a good deal with those chairs and the table! Way to go!
