Do you eat food that is past the expiration date? How far past the date are you willing to go? My mother in law gave us a bunch of canned food that she cleaned out from her house. Everything was expired! One can, I kid you not, was expired in 2001!!!! I threw it all out and then got the idea to ask this question. So How far do you go past the expiration date on your foods?

I don't! I usually toss it the day of. If not, the day before. My grandfather is famous for the giving of expired food. I just say thank you. Then trash it when we get home.

Your mother in law sounds a bit like my own mom. This Saturday the local Boy Scouts are going to come by and pick up canned goods and non perishable food for the local people in need. I was helping her go through her food when I found a can of mixed vegetables from 2006. She said, oh we can keep that, it will probably still be good. I convinced her to let me through it away. One month over experarion is one thing, but two years? And your mother-in-law gave you stuff for 7 years ago? Yuck! The needy don't even deserve that kind of punishment!

I know that's what I said! i couldn't believe she gave it to me. I had to explain to my 6 year old why we couldn't eat any of it. I told her what it meant that stuff was past the expiration date. I about fell off my chair laughing when she said "is grandma trying to kill us?" lol

I'm not sure, I think canned foods last the longest, but I don't know how long you should keep them, I mean after awhile wouldn't stuff from the metal in the can start seeping into the food. I know you can't open something canned and leave it in the fridge, its safer to put it in a bowl or something else. I don't think I would go more than a year with canned food.

I would have thrown it all out too. I actually went through my cupboards on Friday because my oldest is having a food drive and I knew I had some baby food to get rid of. Well I came across a few cans that had expired in september, so I tossed them out. Depending on the item I may go up to a month past expiration.. if it's in an aluminum can or something like that. I once had a bottle of water that had expired, but I mean it's water... does it really expire? If it's like cheese, eggs, or meat or something I might go a couple days after the expiration, or up to a week on some things... so long as it still looks, smells, and tastes okay.

Oh no I will never eat an expired food. It will just cost me a lot for medical bills if I get sick. My aunt is like that too. She would give us any food or anything just coz she wants to. We know she cares for us but they're either spoiled or expired. We just accept it to be polite but we throw it afterwards.

No i dont have food which has expired.I always check the label for expiry date before buying food or medicines. There is no harm in having food or medicine after expiry date.It is just the the power of medicine or the preservatives added to the food wont be affective.

It is the first thing that I check when I am buying food from a supermarket. If I notice that the food is past its expiration date than I will not buy it. If it is past the expiration date by a few days I would try to check if the food is still good but if its months or years I would just throw it away like you did. © ronaldinu 2008

It really depends on what it is. Sometimes the date on there is just a suggested sell by date and not exactly the experition date. If it was a canned food and it was only a couple of weeks or maybe a month over due and it still smelled and looked good I would probably stil eat it, but I wouldn't go longer than that. If it is a dairy product I might go a day over if it smells good, but I would give it a tiny taste first before actually eating it or drinking it. I don't think I would go much longer than a day though. If it was a never opened box a cereal it is problably still good a month after the experation date, but I would smell it and taste a tiny bit of it first. 2001 however, is just a little too old for me.

i don't even buy anything that is close to expiring. even bread. and stuff that does not really expire, like water, i still don't use. or pudding, or anything.... if it's even close to it, i pitch it. why waste my money, or cupboard space on something that isn't gonna get used? i always make sure it is atleast a year from expiration before i buy it or pitch it. i constantly am going through my cupboards looking for expired things. it drives my man crazy.
