Now I've seen it all! A car that runs on AIR!

Can you believe it? It's a tiny bug of a car but they claim it gets up to 35 mph; great for quick runs to the grocery store or drugstore. I find it hard to believe that they could make something as simple as this yet it took so long to do it! Yeah, you won't be able to do any highway driving in this thing unless you really want to make a bunch of people angry. LOL Here's the link to the article about this new car if you want to learn more: http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/106040/Air-Cars:-A-New-Wind-for-America's-Roads Let me know what you think of it. Would you consider buying one of these?

Why do all the environmentally friendly cars look goofy? I'd be surprised if ANYONE in America buys that car. First of all, it only goes 35 miles per hour tops - so you're likely to get flattened by a soccer mom in her SUV. Imagine driving up to the grocery store in that thing. It'd be like climbing out of a clown car.

You just made me think about what it would be like to drive up to a bank ATM. We'd probably have to get out of the car and stand up before we could make any transactions! The link that Hiccup posted in this discussion shows the Air Car from India which looks a lot more "normal", seats six and gets up to 68 mph. It's also thousands of dollars less expensive! I want THAT car!

First off i agree with it looking like Urkel's car lol (character from the tv series Family Matters - for those that don't know) It's a fantastic concept i think the savings on the monthly gas bill will balance out it's overall price in the long run... However the 35MPG thing... ehhh not so hot.. personally if i saw my own mother driving one i'd tease her endlessly! hehe... They have to work on the MPG and the mileage as well as the appearance... how safe is it? I doubt much since it's size... looks more like a pimped out gulf cart! It's a great concept with time i think it will be further developed to match at least some of the general expectations of the average consumer.

They said it should be available by 2011 so that gives them a little over 2 years to make some adjustments. I hope they adjust the price a bit, too! I read that it will cruise at highway speeds with a motor that will continuously recharge the air compressor or something like that. I'm sure the details will be worked out before it's released (unleashed?) on the public in 2011. If I had one and someone teased me or laughed at me, I'd just have to tell them that I'm having the last laugh because, while they're sitting at the gas pump, pouring money into their car, I'll be cruisin' on by and I'll wave at them. LOL

It is neat, but a bit pricey at $20,000. I doubt I would by one for that.

I feel the same way about the price. My SUV cost around that much! Geesh! I'm going to keep my eye on it, though. Hopefully, the price will come down once they realize that people just aren't interested enough in something that tiny to pay that amount of money.

I saw the article this morning. Looks like the Erkel-mobile, At only 35 MPH we'd have to stay off the highways and main roads. Don't want to inspire road rage. Hopefully the speed factor will be improved. Nice step for the environment though

I agree... this is a huge advance for technology and the environment! I prefer the model being manufactured in India right now over this little bug model. Hiccup (response number 8) posted a link to the Indian model. It's better looking, larger, faster AND cheaper!

it is such an amazing invention. Yeah I agree with you. how come they didnt invent it earlier if its that simple? anyways, i am worried about the license to be given to drivers of this car. :P :D
@mentalward (14691)

Why would you worry about the license? I would assume it would be the same license as for any other car. Maybe the big oil companies in the U.S. were using their muscle to keep these cars from being manufactured. I know they wouldn't want a lot of them on the road! We're already dipping into their profits right now by the way gas prices have dropped so fast!

A car that runs on air is a great idea. Unfortunately that one is too small and slow to be able to drive it on any road where I live. You would also probably get a ticket driving it down the bike paths. It's also a little goofy looking. If they could make a normal size, normal looking car that runs on air and goes normal highway speeds then I would definitely consider buying one.

Egads, crazy! I hope they can work out that problem! I also hope that the air cars made in India will be available to us here in the U.S. soon! They are MUCH less expensive! If India can produce these vehicles for as little as $7,000.00, why can't we? At least it's a start! Hopefully, the price our these tiny little bug cars will come down and the efficiency increased. We need this so badly!

Hiccup (response number 8 of this discussion) posted a link to an air car made in India. THAT car is so much nicer than it's American counterpart! It's larger, holds 6 passengers, looks so much better, gets up to 68 mph and 125 miles per charge AND costs a lot less! But, they said that car will probably never be sold in the U.S. Maybe, with the invention of this little bug car, India will import their version. I hope so... I'd really love one of them! Check out his link. I think you'll like the looks of the Indian model.

I do like the one from India much better. It would be great if they would sell them over here. Or maybe one of the American Auto manufacturers could build something nicer on the same idea. I was watching something about a new battery powered car not too long ago which is being designed by one of the American car companies. They can't seem to get past the problem they re having with the battery catching on fire and burning the car up along with it. CAn't remember which manufacturer it was, though.

I wrote about it about a year ago when I first saw it on discovery. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1335167.aspx It was really interesting and I would love to be able to bring those kind of cars into the local markets! Imagine having a fleet of these cars at your disposal at all the major estates for people who do not want to own cars but want the convenience? I mean, if possible, I would love to bring these cars in for the sole purpose of letting people run daily errands that do not require them to go onto the highway. Very interesting. It seems they have done quite a few upgrades since a year ago!

Hmm... the Indian versions are bigger? Where did you go to see the models available from them? Can post the link here? What I like about the one in your yahoo article is that it is able to self re-fuel the compress gas tank. That one is impressive. I really wonder, where can I get my hands on this.

Wow! I'm glad you saw my post, then, and are able to add to it! I'm sorry I did not see yours. I'll have to check it out and respond after I post this. I'm happy to hear that they've upgraded! It looks like it still needs some work but knowing that they're working on it assures me that it just might be THE car to have once it becomes available. I like the Indian version better, though. It's larger, faster, looks more like a car and less like a bug (LOL) and costs so much less! If India can do it, why can't these guys?

I live in the country and I have to take either winding roads or the highway to get places. I would piss off a whole bunch of people if I was driving around one of those things. I think I would have to pass.

I hadn't read the entire article when I posted this but have read more of it since. It said that this little car will cruise at highway speeds with a motor that keeps the compressed air tank full. I live in the country, too, but I think I'd just switch to the country roads instead of highway driving to get to the stores where I shop. I wouldn't want to do any long-distance driving in this little thing... you could be squished like a bug if you had an accident with a semi! I'm going to keep my eye on it to see if there are any further developments.

I read a few months ago about buses in India that have run on compressed air since 2000. We can run cars and other vehicles on things other than gas but the oil companies will beat down every effort here. Yes, I'd buy one if it weren't so expensive. It's cute, too!

Hiccup (response number 8) posted a link to a model of air car being manufactured in India right now. It looks like a little SUV! It seats 6, is MUCH faster, has a longer charge and is MUCH less expensive! The model I want is only $12,600 or something like that. I hope that they can begin importing THOSE cars into the United States. THAT would be the car I'd buy!

I have a small SUV right now but that's only because I need the room at the moment. Once I sell the house I own 250 miles away and finish buying and planting all the fruit and nut trees I want, I won't need anything that large. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this thing! I live in the country but I have a choice of highway driving or winding road to get to all the shopping I need to do. Right now, I use the highway because it's shorter but, if I had one of these things, I'd take the country road. I think I read in that article that it will cruise at highway speeds with a little motor that keeps the compressed air tank filled. We'll see! Imagine the savings!

Thank you for sharing that article. I certainly would buy that car. It is all I need to get me around. I only really go shopping and pick the kids up from School. ( em, would they fit?)( I would squash them in.) That is great, powered by air, WoW. Think of the cost of running it. I am sure it would not be the free type of air. I would probably have to pay tax on that. My husband would certainly not drive it. He is a crazy driver. He has to speed off and drive fast. Hes a lunatic driver. No 35mph would not be his thing. I cannot wait for the day I see this type of car where I live. Great news. A lot of women will be buying it. See how many accidents are caused by those cars. None. The only accidents caused will be the careless men ploughing into them.

They were saying that you could plug it in at home to recharge air with the built-in compressor. I know all about men like your hubby... mine is like that, too. He upsets me with the way he drives. Hiccup mentioned an article about the same type of car that came out in India last year. The one I was reading about in the article he posted said it seats 6. Unfortunately, they also said it would probably never be sold in the U.S. That's probably because of the gas companies using their muscle to keep them out. I like India's model better and it costs so much less! Maybe, if we all protested... I'd LOVE a car like this! I want to tell the gas companies where they can shove it!

Yes, I, for one, am very happy to see this kind of technology finally being developed! We should have been working on this a long time ago; maybe the world wouldn't have so many problems now if this little car and things like it had become available 20 years ago! I'm going to keep my eye on this little car. I think it's adorable! Soon, I won't need all the room in a vehicle that I have now so it will be worth looking into something smaller that costs a lot less to operate and will not have a bad impact on the environment.

Even if I could afford to buy one of these I wouldn't dare because the speed limit on the road I live off of is 55 mph, and most everyone goes a lot faster than this. So trying to go 35 mph on this road would be asking for trouble. When my husband got his moped style type scooter some years ago I worried about him even after he modified it to go faster. Even though it could go past the speed limit, it just wasn't enough to avoid some of those crazy drivers that wanted to push him (tailgate) to see what it could do. Now that he has a motorcycle I feel somewhat better. If he needs to he can avoid the crazies on the road. So as you can see, this is not the car for me.

I read this article a little better and saw that it can come with a motor that would perpetually run the air compressor and it could actually run at highway speeds. Still, it's an awfully TINY car! Tailgaters would scare me worse than they do now! There's a similar car being built in India right now. Hiccup (response number 8) posted a link about that car. It's larger, holds 6 passengers, LOOKS more like an actual car and goes up to 68 mph. PLUS, it's cheaper!!! I want THAT car! Hopefully, one day, they'll import those cars to the U.S. or the manufacturers of this tiny little bug car will wise up and modify it to make it go faster and cost less.

I still think that they have a promising market in ethonel fuel if they would have been working on it years ago. Just in case something like this with the oil going up happened. Now like you said this car is only good for around town driving. Where you are only allowed to drive thrirty-five miles and hour. Which there is nothing wrong with that. But they should have been working on one that goes up to at least fifty-five miles per hour too. This is just the beginning of a long wait for them to get it right. It's to bad that they really don't have the kind of cars that you see in futuristic movies. That fly if they did they would be on the car lot in stead.

Hi mentalward! That is really something! It is kind of funny looking! It does look like a bug! I would be afraid to get in one of them. It looks like it could be very easily squished just like a bug! I don't know how safe it is. They aren't really saying yet. I don't drive so for me it doesn't matter, but I'm not sure I would want to even be a passenger in it. But, it was sure an interesting article!

This will never get to the American market. Canada presently has the ZENN car which is electric. However it cannot be sold in Canada even though it is produced here except as an experimental model recently and its speed is limited to 25 mph by government regulation. How stupid is that restricting top speed to 25 mph. Why you ask does government not allow electric cars on the road, and would certain not allow compressed air vehicles on the road, is that they cite safety concerns, so they say they are doing it for your own good. Governments will not promote electric cars and alternative fuel cars because of two major reasons, first of which is that gasoline price is half tax. If gas was not sold they would lose all that revenue. Second, politicians get contributions from petroleum industries for their election campaigns and the petroleum industry lobbyists are well funded and active in political circles. While the idea of these electric and other vehicles is quaint, they will never be in use until there is a groundswell of support from the populace. Now that the price of gas has temporarily fallen, truck and SUV sales are starting to rise. Read about the Tata Nano a gasoline car which sells for 2500$, and their compressed air car. These will never sell here because of the reasons above. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tata_Motors The technology is available, but not the political will. Americans like their powerful cars and highway speeds too much to give up now.

Unfortunately, you are correct! They are saying that this car will be available by 2011 and there are already air cars in use today in India! I believe that, as word gets out about these vehicles, there will be an outcry for them in the U.S. Politicians don't want the populace to be unhappy! Of course, that COULD be the reason that this little car cost so much! The Indian versions of the air car cost MUCH less and actually run faster! I truly believe that, as more and more people hear about this car, they will eventually be available to everyone. Billions of dollars have already been lost by the oil companies from people cutting back and being forced to tighten their belts. AND, gas prices will rise again, probably even higher than they were a few months ago to offset the loss of revenue by the oil companies. This lowering of prices is simply a political game and we're the pawns. They are in a Catch-22 situation right now and they know it. They're going to have to do something because people are going to insist on a better way to get around. You watch... I bet gas prices start rising again right after the votes are counted up tonight and we have a new president elected. Americans are just going to have to get used to driving less or insisting on a better transportation system. If we're forced to decide between buying gasoline or buying food, we all know which one we'll decide on! It's showdown time!
