Do you ever use search to find a discussion to RESPOND to?

I pretty much only use the discussions search functionality to see if there are already discussions like the one I am thinking of posting before I post it. All other discussions that I respond to myself are found through my regular visits to "friends started" and "new" discussion list areas firstly and then other standard lists throughout the site. I then realized that I have never actually used the mylot discussion search to find a discussion to respond to! Am I alone in this or is this a common trait for many of us? Have you ever used the discussions search field to find a topic or discussion to respond to yourself?

I did a couple of times , when i was in one of the offbeat modes not finding anything interesting or friendds online. And both of them were over 3 months old. The rest of the time i'm using the search to confirm on my discussion only. I don't think you are alone at all. And my actions may not be common ones or good enough for you to form an opinion on. Freaky ones that they are.

You get in offbeat modes alok?? Where was I when this happened? I am like you in using search to check for similar discussions to my ideas only but do not recall ever looking for a discussion to respond to. And your freaky insights will always have merit from some angle or another my friend so thanks for the response and for sharing them!

Where were you ? Dancing in the rain i suppose or on one of those Food shopping sprees . It can be interesting James. Think of some words, not so common ones, hit the search button and see what throws up. Just check this one for example. Put your name in and hit the Button. Wow. Tell me your reaction on the numbers.

I remember doing it a few times when I wanted to refer to some posts of someone. Mostly I searched for my own discussions when I remembered the topic but not sure how I phrased it. It's hell of a job to go back and find out individually. As I write, I remember once I had searched for Mr. Crash for I wanted to hunt something in his profile and wanted to PM some friend the link. Otherwise I go to FRIENDS STARTED and NO/NEW RESPONSES AND RESPOND.

Wow! I just did that and it worked great! Thanks for sharing this. Searching is indeed a problem when you do not have the key words right and most of the times we do not. That's why we are searching. I sounded stupid I know but sometimes it fun being stupid, specially when among friends..

It certainly makes things so much easier doesn't it! I used to go through tremendous frustration sometimes trying to find a particular user and when this method was shared with me I did feel rather silly myself actually. lol. Better late than never though and at least there is now a fast and easy way to do this now, so no more user search frustration!

It can be a bit of a challenge trying to find things sometimes as the keywords people use are not always as accurate as what we would like! I have found that the best way to find an actual member is to just insert their username after the www.mylot.com/ url. This is quick and easy and I heard about this idea from another member a few weeks back. Friends started and the new discussion sections are probably where I spend most of my time too. No response sometimes gets a look in from me as well but it is only after I have exhasted the other areas. Thanks for the response mimpi.

It seems that many of us don't use the search field for these purposes at all so good for you for thinking about giving it a go! I just don't get the urge to seek anything specific and prefer to stumble upon something at random so I doubt I will end up using search to find a discussion to respond to any time soon. Thanks for the response riyasam.

Yes i use the search field before starting a topic. Whether any topic related to it has already been started. Becoz starting the new topic again will be like a spam. So i will search for the topic and if i didnt find it, i will start it. Or if the topic is already started i will simply respond to it and leave it off

I think you will find that most of us will use the seacrh field for the very same reasons jazz as we obviously don't wish to post a discussion that someone has already started! Not many of us use the fields to find discussions to respond to though it seems. Thanks for the response.

Like you I use the search only to try to search out discussion that I am thinking of posting..but there have been times when I used the search to do so and nothing came up only to find that they have one or so similar..so it doesn't always work.. for me anyhow.

After all this time, nothing much has changed from my end at all and I still use search mainly to check for similar discussions before starting one of my own. I've had zero search results come up and then once I start my own discussion, I find ones just like it too, so you're not alone there either. I guess this happens mainly because of keyword differences, even though the overall context is similar. Fortunately it doesn't happen often anymore because I tend to be a little abnormal with my discussions a lot of the time! Thanks for the response Becca.

I've been in this site for nearly 1.5 years already, but not a single time I have used the search facility to locate similar discussions for posting. The only times I use the search facility are when I remembered something was said in some past discussion that I wanted to get my hands on, and I was trying to locate such discussions to retrieve the information posted. Normally I respond to discussions I find from the 'today's top', 'my interests', 'friends started' and 'recent' tabs. Once in a while I will try the new discussions or those without any responses yet. One more source I act on is the myLot Digest that I get in my email. I seem to use more of that these days. Anyway, to get me to post, topics must be of interest to me.

I have not used the "search" to find a discussion. I will try to use it. I usually respond to discussions in "my interests" and "friends started."

I spend most of my time in the "friends started" area and also the "new" section as well. It doesn't seem like the search fields are overly accurate either based on other comments I have heard but if you do try to use it then I hope it works out just fine! Thanks for the response djoyce.

I use it when I'm about to start a new discussions and like you to see if there are already one. I also use it to find certain discussions that I would like to respond to, like twilight and of course rice, lol.

Oh yes, twilight and rice! Where would we be without these 2 things in life? If they ever came up with twilight flavoured rice, I reckon there might be somewhat of a frenzy! I only really use search to check for similar discussions before starting my own and for no other reason. Thanks for the response.

hi james, Honestly i always search the discussion i want to respond for i want something that is more imformative, and i can relate with. Sometimes i end up not responding to a discussion for i can find a discussion that will interest me. I rather go back to my old discussion and comment all who respond my discussion that i havent commented yet.

Hi margarit. It seems that you are one of the very few that DOES search for the discussions! I just don't use the search field for this purpose at all. I tend to spend my time in a few main list areas and then just act on impulse most of the time. There are times that I can't seem to find anything to respond to either, so when this happens, spending more time interacting with people in our own discussions is a very good idea. Thanks for responding.

I have a few times. I think those times were when I wanted to find out if some here are also into some shows, movies or interests that I have. Other than that, I'm like you in using the search (both tags and full text) feature to check if something has already been posted about what I want to talk about.

Now that you have mentioned movies and shpws etc, I think that in the very beginning I may have searched for topics related to certain music bands and things like that. But again that would have been more because of wishing to do a topic myself more than than for any other reason. The standard lists and then responding on impulse is definitely my preferred approach. Thanks for the response SaintAnne.

yes, I have a few times actually. it is quite helpful. although sometimes in looking for a discussion I previously saw. I have used this and not been able to find it again. so.. sometimes it works -sometimes not.

Great! I am sure that it is indeed helpful but I was thinking about it last night and realized that I had never actually used the search fields for this purpose before. I have to admit though that the search functions can sometimes be a bit strange because even when I use it just to check if a similar discussion to my idea exists, it says it doesn't and then when I post it, similar ones pop up! Thankfully this is not often though. Thanks for the response minx.

I spend most of my time looking for discussions to respond to in the same two sections you have described as well. You have a solid post count number for just 20 days too, so I hope you will always continue to enjoy yourself! Thanks for the response 23uday.

I occasionally do. Sometimes, I feel like seeing what type of discussions there are about a specific topic. Then I will use it. Though it happens only once in a while, not very often at all.

I never knew that i could search easier ways in my lot besides just scanning thru the various interests. I am glad to know there is a way but id like to know what it is...lol I have alot to learn here and hope i find many others that would want to help me learn a bit more so i can maximize my time on here to the best i can

You certainly can search for discussions of interest this way lvnstn, but I am not sure how accurate the results may be! lol. I have been here for some time now and I scan through discussion lists myself to find topics to respond to rather than search for them with the functions provided. Give it a go anyways and you may just like using it yourself! I am happy to see that you now know there are more options anyways. Thanks for the response.

No I never used that functionality but I think I am going to start using that to narrow down the discussions I want to respond to.Thank you so much for that ,I am a laugh ,I was always wondering why they force you to attach tags to your discussion -now I know lol.
@James72 (26790)

Attaching tags definitely helps us narrow down our searches ronnyb, but the most important thing is that people make the effort to ensure that the tags are relevant. Sometimes people get a bit silly with tags and this doesn't help from a search perspective. Well now you know why they are there so I hope you will now have some luck finding some things of interest! Thanks for the response.
