Do you volunteer?

My girls and I volunteer every Friday for Meals on Wheels. I love the feeling we all get when we go into the homes with lunch, hugs and smiles for all! My daughters are 9 and 4 and we homeschool. We consider Fridays our Family Values day. We get done and they still have time for school review. Anyway, I'm just curious how many of you volunteer and for what.

That is cool. I do a couple different volunteer activities. I am a guinea pig foster parent for the local guinea pig rescue. I also do photos for them, sometimes volunteer at events, and help out with other things as I can. Once a week I volunteer at a marine mammal rehab center and help care for sick and injured elephant seals, sea lions, and other pinnepeds until they can be released back into the wild.

Are you allergic to all animal fur? Most people are only allergic to a few different species. I'm actually slightly allergic to guinea pigs, but not enough to stop me. Even though the seals do have some fur on them, so far I've never seen anyone be allergic to them. But they only have rehab centers like that if you live relatively close to the ocean.

I'm not even sure if I'm allergic to all animal fur. When I was a kid, my parents would let me stay away from all types. Maybe that's the reason I don't get near them until now. I get this terrible asthma attack when I get near dogs, cats, rabbits, and the like. And I get rashes when I go near chickens, birds, etc. It's frustrating.

Wow, I always envy and honor people who go out on a limb to care for the animals. I am allergic to animal fur so I can't do that. The only pet I have is a gold fish. Anyway, continue to make a positive difference. The world needs people like you.

I volunteer my time and skills to Gawad Kalinga, a Philippine-based anti-poverty advocacy program. I help build and paint houses for the homeless, and teach English to kids. I also spend my birthdays with the kids in the village so they get to partake of good food once in a while.

Oh my gosh! That's so great. Wow you certainly do a lot of volunteering. I love the idea of spending your birthdays with the kids in the village. You must be a truly wonderful person. All the best to you!

Thanks. I've been very blessed in life, so I'm just giving back what I owe to the community.

I just do things in the church, mostly. I give blood, as well. Other than that, not a lot of volunteering, but I do applaud you for your Family Values day. It is great. The local Christian School volunteered at Day Services for my agency one or two days this week. They did crafts with clients, and played games, painted nails, etc. Good for all involved.

Hey there! Doing things with the Church is so important. That's awesome that you find time to do that! It's definitely easier for me to volunteer with the girls because I don't have a full "job". Take care and I'll chat with you later!

I used to volunteer a lot. I would go to soup kitchens and work, I worked at a place that gave out food and clothing. It was very rewarding , but since I have a baby and he is now 2 it is hard for me to do anything like that. but the second i can i will. I wish i could this holiday season, that is the best time to volunteer. takign gifts to kids and stuff. we gave out thanksgiving dinners one year.

That's awesome. Yes, it is really too hard to volunteer when your child is so young, but at least you are keeping it in mind for the future. I love volunteering at the holidays too. I used to help wrap Christmas presents for a group to hand out to needy children. I wrapped each one as if it were going to my own child.

You know I forget that the school system needs volunteers too. I homeschool so I don't think about the importance of volunteers in the school. Good for you for doing that.

Over the years I have volunteered in schools with children that needed an extra hand at getting the basics. This was very rewarding when they moved on to higher levels in school because of my help. Some of them still say Hi when they see me out and about. I have volunteered on commitees for youth development, but this was not so great for most of the people who were also on the commitee seemed to have the own agenda that centered around their own children, not the group as a whole that I and a few others concentrated on. Some of these parents I know longer talk to. But to me the most rewarding to date is the work on a road board, again volunteer, that fixes the roads in the area where I live. I just keep an eye open for problem areas which gets me outdoors, attend meetings to discuss what needs to be done to repair problems, and see the results.

I've always wanted to do some kind of volunteering for the roads. I see the adopt a road & stuff but I've never done it. I love seeing the people out volunteering to clean up the roads, it gives you pride and whenever I see trash on the ground, I try to just pick it up myself. Thanks for your comment.

I'm a member of the Kinette Club locally. We put on the local craft/hobby fair each year, carol festival, skate-a-thon, we participate in telemiracle (both raise $$ for donations and work at the production on the day of), We also do the local seniors supper every year and a variety of other things through out each year (these other things vary year to year) I think volunteering is a good thing - it helps others and it gets me out of the house.

Volunteering is a good thing. I volunteer at a hospital. It's mostly legwork. I volunteer as a messenger. I go floor to floor picking up records, lab reports, etc. and deliver them to the proper offices and mailboxes. I do this once a week. Most of the volunteers are seniors. They have more pep and enthusiasm than the younger employees. It makes me feel good to help people.
