Doesn't anybody make anything any more???????????

November 7, 2008 3:30pm CST
I have been looking at the hobbies posts and the surprising thing is that there does not seem to be anybody making anything any more. I am of the older generation and when I was younger it was imperative that you had some practical skills. At school we were taught woodworking, metalworking and many other practical skills which as we grew up translated into many do it yourself projects, making models and load of other stuff. Now when people talk about hobbies it is all about esoteric subjects with very little practical stuff appearing. Are we as a generation losing the ability to work with our hands. Is this what computers are doing to us??????????????

I'm a very crafty person. If you look in my Mylot photo section you'll see all of the jewelry piece's I have made. I also do decorative painting and digital scrapbooking . I know how to crosstitch also. I also know how to make graphic art and animations. ( even though it's threw a computer program called "Adobe Photoshop" ) I have my own craft area with a HUGE craft table. My son's birthday is tomorrow and I'm hand crafting 95% of his decrations because he want's a birthday theme I can't go out and buy because party store's in my area don't have retro 80's party theme decorations.I have also noticed that not a lot of people don't often post in the here in the myLot hobby section also. People still make and crate things now but I don't think they don't do it as much as they use to do it years ago because there are so many modern day distractions and not enough time anymore for most people to be able to craft like they use to. I wish I had more time to make things, I often go without a lot of sleep sometimes so I can accomplish a craft project I'm trying to complete because I never have the time during the day to craft because I'm too busy.

I really hope not! I love crafting and although the board on here may be a little quite I suggest you check out www.craftster.org if you haven't heard of it already and there you will find hundreds of people and who display and discuss their crafts! I use my hands a lot I make my own jewellery and sell it as well as building sets and deisgning them for my drama course so I know how to work with wood, metal plastic you name it!

I still crochet and knit. I also work on needle point and quilts. And yes I still like to work on model cars and ships - though since our local Walmart quit carrying them, I don't have anywhere to buy them without ordering online. But yes, I know what you mean, many people do not do crafts anymore and quite a few of them are on their way to becoming lost arts.

Thanks for your post and note your interest in model ships and cars. If you look at my profile you will see some photos of kits that I am selling at a very reasonable price. I have quite a few others but have not had time yet to put them on show.

Necissity is the mother of invention, or this case craft, we as a whole do not have the need to be crafty when there are many things out there that are already ready or semi ready, and that was way before computers got in the scene. Anyways, those are my two cents.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. There is so much available at a cheap price that we are discouraged from being creative.

I am a home ec major...sew, bake, make delicious B.D. cakes from scratch, knit, crafts, ...I do lots of things. These days people rather pay for it than do it themselves. Sad but true.

I think cooking and baking are as good a hobby as anything. At least you can taste the results immediately. Regards

Crafts tend to be time consuming. I am sure there is an interest but projects get put aside. A woman on television who is an interior designer of sorts says she has barrels of quilts in her garage half finished or just started. A lot of craft stuff these days seem more on the nick nack side as something practical, and the practical stuff you can usually find at the dollar store a lot cheaper than you can make it. My mother used to knit a lot of socks until the price of her wool go too much and you could buy socks for a fraction of the price, it did not seem to be worth it anymore.

Yes, I have to admit that almost everyone has half finished projects in the workshop, and I have to admit that I am probably worse that most people.

I'm not very creative with other things. I can bang a nail to hang a picture, but I would be hard pressed to build even a birdhouse, I suppose. I do crochet, and make baby blankets, afghans, scarves, dishcloths and such, though. I plan on donating some afghans and lapghans (for wheelchairs) to my local VA.

I try to stay away from the computer as much as possible. I am trying to learn how to crochet and hope to be able to crochet things to sale and to make for family and friends. It would really be fun and economical as well as smart in my own opinion. I am not sure why the hobby boards have grown quiet but there are quite a few and I think that if you just look around you'll find some that are active. Crafts (a picture with a pink knitted project) has just featured a discussion today. Well I hope you can find some more things that are more about handiwork!

I recently made several book shelves, an entertainment center for a friend and a bunk bed for another. Maybe its because I am from that older generation. But more so I like working with my hands. Seeing something that I made make me feel good!

It has a lot to do with what you said... those classes taught in school are seen as just mandatory most if not all students want to dive into the high tech courses. Computers, digital art, computer repair... that sort of thing. I used to take an art class where everything was taught sewing, stamping, woodwork, and some minor metal work... that isn't really taught anymore. Most schools are considered lucky if they use water colors and pastels. Draw an apple, that was my sister's 8th grade project. Yes they taught her about shadows, and different pressure on the pencile gave different texture and what not... but... is that really an 8th grade project?? It's sad that as this age of technology advances that the things i used to enjoy as a kid are deemed obsolete or not important. I guess you and i need an upgrade =P

Most probably not. Or otherwise we would not see those things being sold that are hand made. Anyway, we did had woodwork at our school but I goes that not all people have the same interests. Some might want to continue working with wood while others might want to work with computers. I myself like to work with computers and I have had some ideas as to what I would like to build but most of the time I am afraid of trying to build it because it might not end up looking like what I had in mind. Perhaps I will try to do it later when I am a little older and have more time.
