What's up with beggars always asking for specific sums of money ? I mean if i really want to give them something i will give as much as like to not as much as they want. A little incident last year - a beggar in the subway received a coin after begging between stations (it's value was about 2 US cents) and when he got off the next station he threw it back in the subway as a sign of... protest i think because he did not receive more. There comes the question, why should we ever give money to beggars if the throw away money that we work so hard for.

He actually had the nerve to curse you ? Now that is outrages, i know i shouldn't support violence but he would have had it coming if your husband would have been with you, i'm sure.

I stopped handing out change years ago. I was taken back when a kid asked me for money since his mother would not give him any. I would be embarrassed if my child walked up to a stranger and asked for anything?

I guess it's time for us to come up with another saying to replace "beggars can't be choosers."

In LA hotspots (you know, the ones where a lot of celebrities frequent), there are "beggars" there who "beg" for money from these stars as they see them. I am sure they make so much money a day just "begging".

Hi elitess, That beggar was so spoil and lazy! i will not tolerate this if i were there. Every cent of money if its gather together will make big. Theres a lot of poor people in Indonesia, but i still can tell which one is lazy and which one are fight for their life. Did you know in 2 Us cents, we still can buy "decolgen" the flu and cold medicine for 4 tablet at the Circle-k. This makes me want only things beside money to give for beggars. Like food, clothes, bottles, cans, books for their children. We have to educate poor people.. by not spoil them. Hmm.. Hei! happy posting always!! oxox'dian from bali island.

There is an old Chinese proverb that translates like this: If a man ask you for fish, teach him how to do fishing.

One time I was at the Gateway of India in Mumbai and I had this young girl come up to me asking for money. She greeted me in about four different languages at first too, so you could tell pretty quickly that she was a pro at this! She was very persistent and I was refusing to give her anything. She then changed tact and started to tell me that she did not want my money, but wanted me to go with her to buy some milk for the family baby. I declined this scenario also because I ain;t that gullible! In the end she was so persistent that I got all fed up with it and handed her a 10 rupee note. And funnily enough she handed it straight back and told me it was not enough and she wanted more! It was at this point that I completely lost my cool and told her to either take the 10 rupee's or get the hell away from me. And lo and behold, she walked away and left me holding the money!! Situations like this one prove how organized and "plastic" many of the begging outfits really are. I never gave money to someone asking for it from that point forward and would sometimes freely offer it to people that were sitting there quietly in a doorway or something instead from time to time.

OMG, that girl sure had some nerve to do this, at first i thought you were kidding but then i remembered this is not the panda spanking section, so i realized this is serious and only proves that there are well organized networks that really make a fortune out of this business - yes i am now calling it a business.

Yeah, Ive seen that kind of attitude and from people you'd least expect to do them. They should really just take everything that they can get. They are more in need of it in the first place and knowing that kind of attitude from them just discourages those people who'd like to help them in at least a small way. There was this kid who went in the small store that I was buying from asking for some change. Ive seen the kid around and he actually lives just near by. I playfully told the kid that Ill give him P1 (which is also about $0.02) to which the kid replied: "I want P5($0.10)". My friends and I laughed about it and teased the kid. Bought a packet of biscuits which ironically costs P5 and gave that to the kid instead. Of course he didnt throw it away.

The ones who throw money away don't need the money bad enough. I begged once. I told people I needed X amount for the train to college because I forgot my wallet. It was only a few dollars. It was the truth. A few people gave me money then one gave me more than I needed. I tried to give her change back saying I only needed X amount. She told me to keep it. I thanked her and bought my ticket.

Similar case...I was in the train and you know there is no train without beggars in India...A beggar came to me and begged for for some money..I am a student but still a pitied on him and gave him 50ps..He took the coin in his hand, saw the amount and he kept it back on the seat where i was sitting and just went of...So never give money to any beggar untill and unless he/she is physically disabled...For the rest of beggars i think they can work and earn money for their daily bread..

These days I say beggars as well don't get contented anymore of what they recieve from people. Makes me wonder sometimes if they really need money why not think that 2cents could grow to a dollar if they save. They get so demanding really.... They expect people that they'll be given larger amounts than 50 cents or lower than that value..

Oh that's really rude. How in the world he got the guts to throw away $2c? While we work hard to have that few cents and here comes the boastful beggar throwing away the money we work hard for. I can only sympathize those who no longer give money to beggars because of this reasons. Beggars like this are not worth giving for.

That's what I asked to. I really don't mind giving my extra to beggars too. There is one incident when I bought something in the market. When I go out, there is a beggar outside asking money to me. I never did hesitate to give the child 1 peso and I can't believe his reaction, he doesn't want to accept it. Why would they asked for money when they still be the one to choose how much we are going to give.

a friend of mine had a problem with a beggar, he was asking for 10 cents all the time, and my friend tried to give him a dollar, that beggar started threatening my friend, saying to take the dollar back and give him 10 cents, you have to wonder if he was mentally ill

hi there is a saying that " beggars cant be choosers"! thats rude! those beggars do not deserve any help. they should say thank you to anything that will be given to them. besides most of the beggars are still capable of working except for the old ones. i want to share with you my thoughts. instead of money i usually give food. thanks

That beggar was so rude. I have encountered some beggars also with the 'bad' kind of attitude by them being 'sarcastic' when thanking a person for giving them just a small amount of money. And sometimes when a person would give them food rather than money, they will not accept it and insist to give them money instead. What's happening in the world?!?!. It's such a sad reality.

Hi elitess, Yes! I agree with you, why should we? they are so ungrateful and they don't deserve our money, like you said we worked for, if any of them done that to me I would have given them a mouthful. Tamara

I never physically throw money away. In fact, I pick up coins if they are on "heads" for good luck. I wonder if it's bad luck to throw pennies. Everyone picks them up if they are on "heads" for good luck. My boyfriend picks up my coins off the floor and pockets them for his lunch money.

When beggars are “too specific”, I figure they aren't beggars. They're professionals and begging is their “job”!
