This question has raised in my mind over and over. But I could find the anwser nowhere! I have seen many beauty pageants in television. There are Miss world, Miss universe, Miss Earth....and so many awards out there. I have noticed that when the name of the winner is announced, she instantly starts crying by covering her face with two hands! And she does not stop, untill the photographers or the TV crews have finished taking pictures! Why do they cry? They have won the contest. So they are supposed to smile and take congratulations of the viewers. They should pose for photographs with the winning smile in their face. But they keeps crying! Is crying after winning an award is a must? Does the organizer snatch the crown if she fails to cry? I am confused! Do you know the right answer?

The beauty queens cry for over joy. Their tears are for joy,not for sorrow. It's a human psychology when sommeone gets something beyond his/her expectation he or she cries with joy.In one sentence you can say it 'Tears of joy'.

Most of these girls have been doing pageants since they were little kids. From the shows that I've seen it's a lot of work, stress, physical and emotional pain. So winning the biggest pageant of them all would be overwhelming. They get a lot of prizes that, if they handle it right, can set them up for life. A lot of great careers are started by winning these pageants. It's a once in a lifetime chance and they all know it. There's no chance of coming back to try again next year. I think I would probably cry too if I knew I had just won something that I knew would set me up for the rest of my life.

Winning comes with different feelings and emotions-being the best generates emotional turmoil and sometimes many winners find it hard to hold their tears.

They are crying because it is now over and they can go eat and get out of those uncomfortable clothes!!! The high heels hurt their feet too. LOL

I think crying could mean different feelings. It could be because of sadness, fear, happiness and a lot more. People also have different degree in which shed their tears. Some cries easily while some can control and don't create tears in their eyes. I think winners in beauty pageants cry because of overwhelming happiness. It is the feeling of being rewarded for something you worked hard for. It is quite not pretty to be seen crying but what the heck! It's your moment!

i don't think there is a right or wrong answer here, but i'm pretty sure they start crying because they are overwhelmed by winning and being crowned. when there's the 2 contestants left, i think there's an expectation that they won't win and they start crying also out of happiness when they are crowned.

I don't only cry when I am sad. I also cry when I am really happy, relieved, overwhelmed, and a few others but generally back to the happy feeling. Crying can mean a lot of things. The winner is most likely very happy and really overwhelmed fpr winning. She may have been thinking that one of the others would win. It can also be a mixture of feeling sad for the other girls and yet very happy and relieved at the same time. It's also a feeling of accomplishment that you could actually win something you wasn't even sure if you would. When they cry, it's happiness. This is my opinion because I do the same thing. Of course I'll never win a pageant but it's the same kind of thing no matter what it is.

Tears can bring a lot if definition and meanings. Tears doesn't meant for sadness only. In this case, the winner cried because her heart being touched by the unexpected result. And maybe because they are memorising every single moment and sacrifice that they need to do in order to win the competition. But I'm quite confident, deep inside their heart, they're laughing with full of joy. Furthermore, if they keep on smiling and cheering on the stage, it's quite inappropriate and impolite, right?

It may be different winner to winner, perhaps out of "tradition", as you mentioned. Or perhaps it is honest - out of the suspense and happiness, overwhelming senses of accomplishment or joy. Perhaps it is even both. It could be that crying is just a mark of gratitude and graciousness of receiving the prize. Definitely the organizer doesn't have the right to take the prize back if the winner fails to shed tears though, that is so unjust!
