Working out is making me break out!

OK, I'm trying to get back down to my fighting weight (ie, fit into my work wardrobe again when I start a new job!), and I'm doing alright. Five pounds so far! However, working out is making my skin break out, pretty gross! I usually wear like a cotton tee shirt or something, and I shower pretty much right after, but regardless, my back is breaking out really bad. I was wondering if there are any particular fabrics or brands that would help with this? I didn't really want to invest in workout clothes, cause really who cares about looking cute while working up a sweat? Any advice?

I read through the couple of replies so far and I agree with the first - powder does help because it absorbs the sweat and so your sweat won't have to stay on your back so long. Then about scrubbing, I wouldn't suggest it. Experts (sorry for the lack of resources but I read it before) say that soap is already good enough for exfoliating and scrubbing does more harm than good because your skin naturally sheds itself anyway. If you are going to scrub, use a towelette instead and don't scrub too hard :) If you'd want a "cure" you can buy Eskinol or whatever pore cleansing solution (astringent) for the face and then mix in Dalacin-C (over the counter antibiotic med). Then apply that after shower before bed then again after shower in the morning.

I've never heard of Dalacin-C, I'll see if I can get any information on that at the pharmacy. It seems like you know a lot about this, thanks for the advice!

My sister had a nasty outbreak before and she did everything she could to fix it. That was one of the solutions that actually worked. Good luck!

The most likely culprit is the perfumes in the laundry detergent or fabric softener you use. They are great when they stay on your clothes but when you sweat they transfer to the skin and can cause irritation. I went thru two different times in my life when I had to use unscented laundry detergents and no fabric softener because I became sensitive to perfumes. The body chemistry changes several times over a lifetime. Things that you have never been allergic to in your life suddenly make you sick or break out and visa versa. Congrats on the weight loss!

Thanks for the congrats! I will try switching my detergent... I keep an odor free detergent cause I like those fancy smelling fabric softeners (its one of the few household items I splurge on!), so if I just cut out the fabric softener that should help. Thanks for the advice!

Excellent thread! My wife and I have had the same issue when we work out so I'll be closely reading the great suggestions you get here. Back acne is the worst. Especially since it's awkwardly located and hard to reach.

Well first congratulations on loosing the weight. I am not sure what you should do about the breaking out. Maybe put some powder on your back before starting to work out and that might help with the sweat buildup. Of course, shower right after.

Thanks! The powder is an interesting idea, I've never heard of it before. I would worry though that it would solidify and start dripping off me, people might think I'm secreting ectoplasm or something!! I'll check around and see if anyone has tried it. Thanks for the reply!
