Lost dog...

Just the other day we had found that a beautiful husky had wandered onto our property. We looked and it had no tags. So we took it in and started to look for the owners. Would you have taken it in? Would you look for the owners? We did not want to call the by-law officer because then this would mean that the person who owned her would have to get a ticket. This was not a recurring thing so I felt that the people accidently lost their dog and did not just let it out to roam along. We did find the owners and were glad to see that a little girl got her dog back. What would you have done? Would you have let the family get ticketed?

I do not know what happened to the owners if they lost their dogs in my country. But, since you said if they will get a ticket, then I won't call the by-law officer too. Unless the dog is not well taken care, and the owner purposely dumb him/her. I'll see if I can find the owner, or I'll keep the dog in my house first. That's so kind of you to take care of the beautiful husky, otherwise I think the little girl will be very sad if she loses her dog.

Thanks for the kind words. We do not like calling the by-law officer unless the people constantly let their dogs roam. If they do let them roam then they could get hit by a car.

I'm not sure what ticketed means, I don't know if that happens in the UK. I've found a few stray cats over the years, one of them spent months living at my offices, we re-homed it (after trying for months to locate the owners). We found one recently, that had a huge wound on it's back. We asked at a lot of houses to see if anyone knew who it belonged to with no luck. If it hadn't been hurt, I would have just petted it and sent it on it's way, but as it was injured, we called the RSPCA who took it to a vet. I couldn't have just the left the animal to roam about, not knowing if it even belonged to anyone who could help it. I think with a lost dog, I would try to find the owners, but I would probably call the RSPCA if I couldn't find them. That's one of the first places any responsible owner would look anyway. Well done for getting the husky back to it's family :)

Ticketed here means that you get a fine and have to pay money to get your dog back. It costs you lots of money. Thanks for posting.

I think you did the right thing and gave the owners the benefit of doubt. Tags can get lost or even fall off collars and many owners prefer to put them up at home instead of chancing them getting lost and never recovered. I'm glad that you found the owners and that the little girl got her dog back. I bet she was one happy little girl!

You are very thoughtful and very responsible! You darn rights, I would have welcomed that dog into my home, and then pull out all the stops looking for the owner. You must have been very proud of yourself for the manner in which you handled this....and your heart filled with joy when the little girl got her friend back, knowing that it had been lovingly cared for! Joy to you!

Lisa0502....Thank you...and you truly are the kind of person that this world needs more of! As they say, water finds it's own level....and your act of kindness & unselfishness will be returned ten-fold! Just the fact that you were so considerate regarding the owners, just makes me proud of you! Your forsightedness in not calling authorities, because once these animals are turned over to them, you never know the demise! Thank you, on behalf of all our friends, in fur coats.

With living in the city as well as the country. In the country we just call the person who owns the dog cause if the dog comes into our yard it is going to be from a neighbour of ours. However most times we don`t even do that as they are country dogs and all the dogs seem to gang up like a dog gang and hang out just like teenagers do so we leave them be on their own. They know where their homes are. In the city I won`t go door to door and find their owner cause it`s a big city and it could take a long time doing so. If dogs are running free in the city it`s usually because someone neglected the dog and the dog got away or just took off on them. There is really not much we can do about dogs that roam here in the city and finding the owners is not in my schedule for the day.

In the country the only dogs that come over are our neighbours dog and we are fine with them being over at our place. However in the city you don't know what area of the city that dog is from. So hence the search for the owner is going to be utterily impossible as well not worth find the owner. The owner themselves should take it upon themselves to find their dog.

I can see what you are saying but if it were an accident that the dog got loose then what? I just wanted to try to help people who would hopefully help me in the same way if it were me. But I do understand the city thing. I live in a small town so it is not too hard to try to find the owners.

i had found a labrador some years back with no collor on it.... he is a beautiful dog....very healthy when we found him.... at it was around 2 am when we found him so we coudnt really see anyone around who could be his master or owner.... and being a labrador he should have been extra friendly but he dint care a hoot about us standing there looking at him.... we went up to him and called for him and he willingly came up to us....we petted him for some time and then decided to take him home as the street dogs were pestering him quite a bit... and he loyally followed us home without intimidation..... which was very surprising...from his behaviour it looked like he was an army or police trained dog.... we waited for a couple of days and tried lookin for the owner but in vain as no one showed up with a missing dog complaint so we guessed that the dog was let go case....he is still with us and touch wood very healthy....but i still wonder why would anyone leave such a wonderful animal on the road where it could be stolen by cruel people or be attacked by stray dogs of the locality...... a dog like this actually costs a lot if to be sold..... i wonder what would have happened to him incase we wouldnt have chanced by him that night and found him there..... the thought itself scares me !!

It is so nice to hear that you gave this dog a home. A couple od our dogs were abandoned dogs as well, I think that they really do appreciate the fact that you welcome them into your home. Thanks for posting.

Luckily you took care of the husky, so that the owner can get back her lovely dog. I think I'll also do the same, take care of the dog first, then look for the owner. Unless I really can't find the owner, then I'll need to find out where I should bring the dog too.

Hats off to you Lisa. The people that care enough to take on the responsibility of a lost or abandoned animal these days are few and far between. I bow to you for the effort you put in to find the owners. You most certainly did do the right thing. You are a good person in my book and you should be proud of yourself in a most wonderful thing you did for the dog and that precious little girl.

If the owner will get a ticket, you probably should not report to officer. But, how would you find the owner? I believe they inject a chip to their dog and only the officer could track it. Am I right?

We live in a small town. I reported it to the local vet and the radio station. I did not take her in to see if she had a chip or not. But she might have had a chip in her.
