I'll be going to college soon and was wondering if anyone has some tips on saving money in college. What are some things you did to save money while you were in college? I'll be working part time so I can help pay the bills.

I did a few things to save money while I was in college: - use public transportation when you can, especially if you live in a city where it's plentiful (like Chicago). If you end up using it a lot, it's cheaper to buy the week or month passes in the long run, if your city offers them. - don't buy prepackaged food, don't buy "cheap food", don't buy junk food, and don't eat out often. It LOOKS like it's cheaper but it costs more in the long run. Buy big bags of stuff like spaghetti noodles, rice, etc. You have to cook it but it's ultimately cheaper. Just cook a bunch of it at once and throw it in the freezer so you'll have something to heat up quickly if you're hungry and don't have time - it'll make picking food up at a fast food place less tempting. - buy your clothes at thrift stores - try to get textbooks from places like Half.com or cheap textbook websites (that are legit and have a good reputation). I guarantee they're overpriced at your college book-store. During the first week of class, make sure to ask your professor if an older edition of the textbook is o.k. to use for the class - a lot of times, it's cheaper to buy an older edition. If he or she says no, though, try to find the new edition as cheap as you can. - If you bought a textbook at the school store, don't mark it up - keep it in as good of condition as possible. Check how much it's selling for on places like Half.com or Ebay before you go into the school bookstore to try to resell it, and decide where to resell it depending on which place you're likely to get more money for it.
